One of my basic rules for online interactions: debate with anyone in good faith, debate with nobody in bad faith. Insincere grifters don't get the time of day and there's no intellectual loss involved at my end.

This is something that needs to be appreciated on a deep level. There is no such thing as a hallucination.

This framing is beneath contempt. The Christian right and MAGA launched an unprecedented assault on the civil rights of a tiny minority and successfully weaponized the pseudoliberal establishment - led by the NYT - to provide it with a medical controversy pretext that doesn’t actually exist.

If anyone knows how to cool a classroom down then don't be a stranger.

I’m convinced this is how a bay leaf would talk

Generative AI has existed in the form of consumer products for I guess three years or so now, which doesn't seem like a long time but it's apparently enough to have driven several people to H.P. Lovecraft levels of utter madness

golf is a very strange game because basically you're taking a huge amount of land and making it a weirdass obstacle course for a tiny ball. imagine holding a golf ball up to see the ~200 acres you have reshaped and whispering to it "this is for you. this is all for you"

Love it when the local news website undermines its own crappy clickbait headlines with its tags

my grandpa was illiterate so i have no idea if this ouija board is working or not

I also hate this cartoon. Edgar Allan Poe, famous hater of subtle symbolism. He wrote The Raven because he was mad at Dickens for putting a talking raven in a book just because he (Dickens) thought it was neat. Poe wanted the raven to mean something to the story!

the thing that really blows up the whole "bluesky is an echo chamber" discourse is that it pits outcomes (this place has particular biases) against structural issues (this place is run by a bad actor who systematically manipulates every aspect of it to forward his obscene agenda) which is fixable?

Not saying Cornwall is fiddly to travel to, but the blue line is one hour of travel and the orange line is three.

The Ring is a film about the importance of looking after your emotional well-being

Woke is when the National Trust uses vegan cream for its scones.

if Thunberg is brave enough to repeatedly put herself directly in harm’s way, then journalists can be brave enough to say that a civilian vessel was illegally seized in international waters, and its crew abducted

Gen AI lyke a stealthye vampyre doth hyde the corpses (texts) that it hath drained. Yn contrast, even the rankest act of publisshinge piracye at least doth move a booke ynto the handes of a reader. But Gen AI doth nevir cite sources or reveal the workes it hath plunderid. A solipsism moost vile.

I'll never get over how the best line in all of noir – "I've got eight slugs in me. One's lead, and the rest are bourbon" – doesn't come from Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett, but Calvin and Hobbes

every grindset, manosphere influencer is on the phone with their PR team asking whose side they should take

I can't deny it's tempting to open Twitter again tonight.

Every day that this horror continues, I think of Omar El Akkad's tweet: "One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this."

Generalising here, but the creative arts are still often considered frivolous by a public which spends billions enjoying them, and a government doing very little to protect them.
