Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer tried to set up an AI chatbot but it didn’t work properly; so they tried again and still it failed. And do you know why? Because they wouldn’t let it lie. xx

Morning all. Today is Sheffield Wednesday. And here are some House Martins, so happy hour all round. Have a nice day. xx 🪶 #ukbirding

Misty evening in Sheffield, 1937 by Bill Brandt. He said “A feeling for composition is a great asset. I think it is very much a matter of instinct. It can perhaps be developed, but I doubt it can be learned" #Photography

Nice comparison between Guillemot and Razorbill as you can see the chocolate-brown of a Guillemot compared to the black of a Razorbill. Smart birds.

‘Brown has never written a dull or inelegant sentence, and his parade of publications over the last sixty years continues to astonish, instruct and beguile.’ Diarmaid MacCulloch on the life and work of historian of late antiquity Peter Brown: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Blue Tits raise large broods in tree holes or nest boxes. Both parents feed the chicks hundreds of times a day, timing their efforts to peak caterpillar season. Fledglings emerge in a burst of fluff and noise. #SpringStories

Just a small wave at anyone caught up in the Unbound/Boundless mess that you can get advice from the Society of Authors on contracts if you're a member. It's £32 a quarter, cheaper if you're over 65/under 35. Pretty much anyone at any stage of a writing career can join as an associate member.

Welcome to Super Seabird Sunday where we ask you to share videos, photos & artwork of seabirds to brighten up timelines. Here is my contribution of a Puffin bringing back a bill full of Sandeels to the Isle of May #SuperSeabirdSunday

There was, so the story goes, a man who won the pools. Millions. Never had to work again. He sent his boss a telegram: “fuck you for a start stop insulting letter follows stop”. This morning I got an email that nearly made me follow suit. Only difference is, I haven’t won the pools. Far from it.

I’m reposting this as there is free shipping again this weekend. xx

The Outsiders touring exhibition will open next on 1 June at @workersgallery.bsky.social and will be there for three months. Delighted to be working with such a well-respected gallery on this. The exhibition will include a ‘gallery in a box’ for those in care who can’t travel to see the exhibition.

This is going to sound incredibly earnest and preachy but fuck it. Support creative people. Buy their stuff. Share it on here. Music, art, words, whatever. Things made by humans for humans.

I’ve always thought that portraiture is more than just photography, it has to show us something of their inner self. This is Garth from the Outsiders project on homelessness. He wanted to be an artist but his life took a different path. They all have a story.

Michelle, Manchester in 2019 from the Outsiders project. She became homeless at 13, having been abused as a child, and used to sleep in the bin sheds on the Offerton Estate in Stockport. She told me she felt safer sleeping rough as a child than she did at home.

Swifts have lost more than half their population in 20 years. A simple £35 brick in new builds could help save them. Labour used to support this – now they’re planning to backtrack. Morning all. There’s a Great Tit who likes to sit on the end of our garden shed. Sometimes known as Black-headed Bob, Joe Ben, Sharp Saw or Big Ox-eye, but to me he’ll always be ‘Jeremy Clarkson’. Have a great weekend. xx 🪶 #ukbirding

We invite scientists and those working with and managing seabirds to create symposia focusing on the conference theme, “Wings of Adaptation: Seabirds in a Changing Climate.” Learn more about how to propose a symposium or workshop for WSC4 on our website. bit.ly/43sLHKc

Power use by generative AI - chatbots like Chatgpt and Copilot - is insane. This is a really good explanation of how much energy typical queries use - and what that impact is www.technologyreview.com/2025/05/20/1...

Today’s #SpringStories spotlight turns to the secretive Dunnock. 🪺 A regular host to Cuckoos, Dunnocks rarely reject even the most mismatched egg. Dedicated parents, they'll feed their own streaky fledglings & imposters alike...even as the Cuckoo chick soon dwarfs them in size!

Sorry, no pics but Cuckoo showing very well at StaveleyNR this afternoon. xx @nybirdnews.bsky.social @northyorksbirds.bsky.social #ukbirding

“238 authors and agents were collectively owed £657,000 by the failed business and are also unlikely to receive a dividend, along with the nearly 8,000 website customers owed £391,000.” More detail on Unbound’s debts. This is shocking and shameful. www.printweek.com/content/news...

This was recording in studio 5 while we were in studio 3. I amused myself by imagining a production of King Lear where he reacts to each development with increasing incredulity.

The Outsiders pin-up exhibition packed and ready for installation at the @workersgallery.bsky.social later this month. Brian, the man in the photo, is now housed after 25 years of sleeping rough. He has a copy of the book and one of my contacts at @bigissue.com sees him with his dogs most days.

Morning all. There’s a blackbird that often comes and sits outside the window where I work. Sometimes called the Ouzel Cock, the Woofell, the Merle or the Amsel. But I like to call him Gerald. Have a lovely weekend. xx #ukbirding 🪶
