I'm looking for a postdoc in quantitative ecology / macroecology to start in summer/fall 2025 in my lab at Oklahoma State University. Please spread the word www.gilbertecology.com/opportunities

Chicago, ~150 years ago. Imagine this today.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

you might think N American species are getting common at their north range limit and rare at their south range limit as temps get warmer but you would be wrong new paper in GEB w/ @eliotmiller.bsky.social & Matt Strimas-Mackey, eBird Status & Trends ftw onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

F*ing love this! Why? Went to the #eBird homepage just now and saw this new splashy photo. This nest was only first described "a few years ago" (showing my age), but now I can count the bristles on this beauty's face.

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

Thanks @nautil.us for the cool blog post on our bird tree! @eliotmiller.bsky.social nautil.us/all-birds-ro...

NEW: Starting May 5, NSF will implement an across-the-board 15% indirect cost rate (mirroring policies at DOE, NIH) Also, NSF staff expect 341 additional terminations today, bringing the total number of terminations to ~1,380.

Cooking up some good stuff over here for an upcoming acoustic monitoring project in Ecuador. Part of the #BirdsPlusIndex project at @abcbirds.bsky.social

"North American bird declines are greatest where species are most abundant"--a stark, timely reminder of just how important conservation measures are. We need to save birds before it's too late. New research out by Cornell Lab of Ornithology & @abcbirds.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

We actually wrote an article about this, it's not just a joke. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

A complete and dynamic tree of birds - out today in PNAS! Teamwork with @eliotmiller.bsky.social and others at @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social and Open Tree of Life to put together current relationships across all birds. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

*** Academic BFD alert *** We just published a new global bird phylogeny. It synthesizes the work of thousands of researchers before us, and it will grow and improve over time. @snacktavish.bsky.social @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

This is going to be an exciting week if #birds, #evolution, or #conservation interest you! Watch this space!

The current #FeederWatch interactions dataset has grown to include just under 500,000 pairwise interactions! So many cool projects waiting to be done with this unique resource. FeederWatch data is always freely available feederwatch.org/explore/raw-...

This week 3 of my NSF grants were terminated illegally. apnews.com/article/nsf-...

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday. I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further. If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

I got a parabolic microphone and now all I want to do is record birds! Shooting for 500 species by the end of the year. macaulaylibrary.org/asset/634411...

The Trump Administration is stealing from us. NSF-funded research is for the public good by design. Our future scientific workforce. Our ability to use science to solve real-world problems. The joy and wonder we get from learning about our world. Science is for everyone, not just billionaires.

"A New Future for the Biodiversity Heritage Library" blog.biodiversitylibrary.org/2025/04/new-... Important changes for BHL @biodivlibrary.bsky.social which can no longer be hosted at #Smithsonian and needs a new home.

Evidence of US brain drain? US scientists submitted 32% more applications for jobs abroad Jan-Mar 2025 than during same period in 2024. US-based users browsing jobs abroad increased by 35%. Data from Nature Careers global science jobs platform. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Our backyard robins have successfully secured another sponsorship by Bota Box for this year's nesting season. First photo from yesterday, when I saw the female starting to collect material, second from this morning.

My PhD student's NSF grant was terminated today. Her dissertation investigates why air pollution monitoring, metrics, and regulations don't properly capture the harms experienced by marginalized communities--esp in the most polluted Detroit neighborhoods. She and I are happy to talk with press etc.

So excited to see this out. It took us almost a decade to get here. Big props to the whole team for seeing this the whole way through, especially @davetoews.bsky.social with his vision, perseverance, and writing session hosting.

Hot off the presses and so so thrilled. Thanks to @inaturalist.bsky.social + computer vision we found something beautifully simple: Red and orange flowers bloom later than all the other colors in the eastern United States. Paper here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1kwzh3QW8S...

This is why the media’s credulous boosterism for Colossal is so dangerous. “Innovation, not regulation” is tech-bro propaganda. It’s the false promise that any problem can be solved with some future breakthrough that will enable the same people who got us into this to profit from the solutions.

🚨 Not a drill: NSF GRFP results are NOW OUT!!!!! But...good news and bad news. 👍 I'm *thrilled* for the grad students for whom getting this award will be life-changing, esp now. 👎 # of fellowships went down by 51% (1000 this year vs. 2036 last year) See here: www.research.gov/grfp/Awardee...

We've @benjaminfreeman.bsky.social previously demonstrated that crows are easily rankled at this time of year www.allaboutbirds.org/news/crows-h..., so seeing them going after hawks is no surprise. My 7yo's recent take on what happens next, however, was hilarious. MS Bing really brought it to life..

We need to focus more broadly than events in the White House. The entire GOP is working to give our Federal lands to private interests. Eliminating Federal land jobs will discourage public visitors. Extractive industries will do permanent damage. We must stop the privatization of our land.

Deadline tomorrow, April 4th at 5:00pm! Apply & share!

New study in @nature.com: we focus on the diversity that's missing - “dark diversity.” Human impact means only 1 in 5 species persist in disturbed areas versus 1 in 3 in pristine ones. My summary of the project & its implications: the3dlab.org/2025/04/03/g...

Is #RegenerativeAgriculture the solution to delivering for both food and nature? A new report by the British Ecological Society brings together 40 academics, practitioners and farmers across the UK to explore the evidence. 👇 https://shorturl.at/s9TM4

"This will go down as one of the darkest days in modern scientific history." Story on the decimation of NIH by @maxkozlov.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/d41...?

Thousands of the best experts at FDA, NIH, and all across HHS are being terminated right now. These are the people who make sure the medications you and your children take are safe. These are the people who perform and oversee research on cancer, infant health, and so so so much more.

Help make the @umassamherst.bsky.social campus bird friendly! Since 2022, hundreds of student volunteers have found 100s of bird-window collisions. With $2100 we can put up bird-safe window coverings on one of the deadliest buildings. You can donate here: minutefund.uma-foundation.org/project/46296

A call to arms for eBirders and iNaturalists. 🚨 We want your bird photos! If you photograph feeding birds with flowers, fruit, seeds or prey, upload the image with locality details. We are data-harvesting species, size and type of food/prey to study foodwebs and species interactions. Thanks! 🧪🌐🪶

Our new @adriftlab.bsky.social paper is out, lead by @alixdejersey.bsky.social showing the insidious impacts of plastics on seemingly health birds (1/5) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Am I the only one who finds that @oxfordacademic.bsky.social sites are super slow and often never load completely? E.g. academic.oup.com/jof/article-...
