Rough day for those of who work with large companies to study the effects of AI

Huge day for me, frankly

Lots of people dunk on this, but replace dolls with medical equipment or any number of food items and it's less funny.

Happy to announce that @edwardwiles.bsky.social and I have a new addition to the family! Welcome to the world, Penelope!

Trump has perfected the art of Pareto Worsening, a change in allocation making at least one person worse off without making a single person better off. Trade war, Medicaid cuts, science cuts, there are no winners here, only losers.

Your tariff rate is your star sign divided by the number of boys you've kissed, multiplied by one

👏 come on universities, let’s see more of this. Conceding has gotten Columbia jack s***, let’s stand up to the bully together

🚨 New paper alert, with @johnjhorton.bsky.social! Using an experiment run on a large online labor market, we provide evidence that providing employers access to an AI-written first draft of a job post harms the efficiency of the market. emmawiles.github.io/storage/jobo...

Economists- what’s the norm for cover letters for journal submissions? Yay? Nay? Yay, but they don’t matter? what’s the deal.

This breaks my heart. This research project has been going on for 30 years and studying the long term effects of Type 2 Diabetes (a condition which >10% Americans have) and the effectiveness of various interventions. All because the the funding goes through Columbia on the way to the orgs running it

In addition to being morally wrong this is also just plain old wrong as shown by research by @kevinshih.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Is there anything vaguely coordinated we (ex. faculty) can do to try to convince our universities president & administrations to take a hard stance on the side of academic freedom, free speech, and against Trump?

Happy St Patrick’s Day from a Dropkick Murphy’s concert at Fenway! <- Most Bostonian sentence of all time

My husband asked for help on this section of the crossword where something was clearly wrong. On this clue he had put ELLA and said to me, his beloved wife EMMA, “Not sure about ELLA. I’m sure about the E & the A, but I can’t think of any other names that take the form E __ __ A.”

New collective noun for economists just dropped

This bar seems...so high right now

Just called a nail salon to make an appt for manipedis this weekend. Scrolled through instagram while making the appt, was giving the conversation about 20% of my attention, ended it by saying "Love you, bye!" It's not the worst thing that happened this week, but for me personally it's up there

Why are tech people talking about the idea that as something (compute) gets more efficient/cheaper people will use more of it as a paradox? Is it just that “jevons paradox” is sexier than “downward sloping demand curve”? www.npr.org/sections/pla...

WIRED is tracking numerous reports of Musk-related shenanigans across the federal govt. We're looking for fed employees open to discussing the activity they're seeing or to help confirm other reports. Anonymity offered. Please use @signal.org (contact dell.3030). Do not use work networks/devices.

For those wondering: Yes, I'm uploading the entire 15 GB public-facing CDC.gov website that I downloaded a few days ago...but it's gonna take awhile to upload...
