It is perfectly acceptable to begin a sentence with ‘and.’  And it’s equally acceptable to begin a sentence with ‘but’ or ‘or.’

I have it on good authority that this novella nicely demonstrates that (1) sword & sorcery stories can be nicely narrated in a "literary" fashion, and (2) S&S tales can indeed have much to tell us about imperial warfare (and not merely its supposed glories).
