I've worked with Tsilavina and can vouch for her passion and conservation work! Please donate if you can.

Please support my friend and collaborator Tsilavina Lydie as she and her family face eviction. Tsilavina is a passionate researcher and conservationist working towards protecting natural heritage and biodiversity of Madagascar. gofund.me/58d2c7c4

in a keffiyeh no less. a Vince Carter dunk on imperialism. you love to see it

turns out i actually did still have the ability to be shocked by current events. who knew. www.thedailybeast.com/kristi-noem-...

"Why do faceless politicians have the power to strip human beings of their divine moments?” Mahmoud Khalil shares a public letter to his 3 week old son, who he hasn't been allowed to meet because ICE is keeping him detained for his speech in support of Palestinian rights.

Long overdue. Rümeysa, I look forward to welcoming you home to Somerville.

The 16-year-old was dragged away and arrested by Worcester PD because she kicked the car ICE was holding her mother in as her mom was taken away. The day earlier, ICE had taken her dad as well.

Hot take: this will be very very bad for ecology, environmental biology, taxonomy/systematics, etc

This is how I feel, too. I think a large part of how we got here is that test-based K-12 education is so deeply flawed. There is almost no reading or writing compared to when I was in school. Then, when students hit college they've never practiced those skills, so of course turn to LLM's.

Look at this video: a *huge* crowd of Vermonters swaying alongside Mohsen right after he was freed, singing "We Shall Overcome" Signs reading "Hands off our students" & "free speech" are peppered in between large Palestine flags

ICE showed up today where I attend school at the University of Houston. It’s hard enough trying to study and prepare for finals, we should be able to do that without fear of being illegally sent to a foreign country.

A new study models the impact of the implosion of U.S.-funded disease treatment and prevention in the developing world — and suggests that Elon Musk and Marco Rubio will go down as among history’s greatest monsters if funding and effective administration are not restored.

🧪 Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧵 On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE). The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases: "not subject to appeal"

For the next three weeks No Other Land is available to stream online with a donation!! supportmasaferyatta.com

NSF has spent decades—and billions of dollars—trying to attract more women and members of underrepresented groups into STEM. Not anymore. scim.ag/3RUtgZg

Apparently all it takes these days to destroy American science is a visit from three of Musk's minions:

For those of you working in the applied environmental sciences (e.g., policy, NGOs, restoration, etc.), what are most important skills that we should be cultivating in the next generation of environmental leaders before they graduate from college?

Mohsen Mahdawi of White River Junction, Vermont was illegally detained by ICE during what was supposed to be the final step in his citizenship process. Mr. Mahdawi, a legal resident of the US, must be afforded due process under the law and immediately released from detention.

alright i have my laptop, guess i'm livetweeting the dire wolf preprint. so a quick reminder: this is not yet peer-reviewed, so there's some different expectations re: quality. also let's be clear, i'm a hella biased reader, bc i don't trust the hype they're courting

BREAKING: An immigration court determined our client Mahmoud Khalil to be removable from the U.S. based solely on his political speech. The fight isn't over — we'll keep fighting for Mahmoud's freedom and all of our First Amendment rights in federal court.

The NSF's flagship fellowship program typically gives offers to 2,000+ young scientists. This year, in the face of looming budget cuts, that number was halved: only 1,000 received an offer. Our story on what that means for the science talent pipeline: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list

Inside me there are two wolves. One of them has a 15 genome edits the other 20 genome edits. Neither of them is a dire wolf.

For almost 2 weeks, Badar Khan Suri was kept in a room without a bed & with TV blaring 21 hrs/day. He was given used underwear & red uniform "usually reserved" for "high security" detainees. Not allowed to spend more than 2 hrs/week outside dorm. His little son has stopped talking in his absence.

Houston police are now arresting people with "ICE warrants," which now appear when they run checks at traffic stops. Here, a man was stopped for a cracked windshield, police ran his ID, the warrant popped up, and then they arrested him. He's now in ICE detention. houstonlanding.org/tell-the-tru...

Mahmoud Khalil's new op-ed from detention— "Faced with a movement for divestment they couldn't crush, your trustees opted to set fire to the institution they're entrusted with…History will redeem us, while those who were content to wait on the sidelines will be forever remembered for their silence."

🚨UPDATE: Rümeysa Öztürk has now suffered three separate asthma attacks while in DHS custody. She has not received her required asthma medications—a violation of her fundamental right to medical care. This is cruelty, it is neglect, and it is a damning moral and legal failure.

120 Years of "Lemurology" (study of lemurs): what has changed? Read our newly published paper in Biotropica to find out more.

This is the rare evidence in the last 3 months (and frankly the past year and a half since students have renewed protests for Palestinian liberation) of a university throwing clear support behind a student and their academic freedom. The bar is in hell, but in this case Tufts is clearing it.

This story should be viral

NEW: @aclu.org obtained ICE's "Alien Enemies Act Validation Guide," confirming all it takes to be sent to rot in prison in El Salvador is being Venezuelan and 1) having a tattoo an ICE officer says is a "gang tattoo" and 2) displaying "logos," "symbols" or clothes an ICE officer says are gang signs.

SCOOP: The Trump admin appears to be going into a visa database to quietly change students' immigration status. It's coming entirely by surprise — setting students up to be detained without warning. It's Mahmoud Khalil & Rumeysa Ozturk — on a wider scale.

New Rubio order (leaked to me) directs the State Department to spy on student visa holders and applicants social media for "a hostile attitude toward U.S. citizens or U.S. culture (including government, institutions, or founding principles).” www.kenklippenstein.com/p/exclusive-...

a cage full of shaved men in bunks stacked up to the ceiling is the modern day death camp. they are invoking the cruelty, the sadism, the AESTHETICS of Nazism and turning it against young Latino men. it is disgusting and it offends me in my deepest self.

My stomach sank to my ankles on seeing this

The Trump administration shipped Ozturk 1400+ miles away to Louisiana, just like Mahmoud Khalil. Just months ago, rights groups published a report on ICE facilities in Louisiana titled "Inside the Black Hole: Systemic Human Rights Abuses Against Immigrants Detained & Disappeared in Louisiana."

The biggest problem with putting plans for bombing Yemen in a group chat is that THE UNITED STATES HAS BOMBED YEMEN ALMOST FIVE HUNDRED TIMES SINCE 2002, NOT INCLUDING THE ILLEGAL CLUSTER MUNITIONS AND OTHER WEAPONS WE GAVE THE SAUDIS TO ALSO USE TO BOMB YEMEN. WE SHOULD STOP BOMBING YEMEN.

NEW: Hossam Shabat’s Last Article Filed hours before his killing in an Israeli airstrike, journalist Hossam Shabat describes the resumption of Israel's scorched earth campaign in his hometown of Beit Hanoun. Translated through tears by Sharif Kouddous dropsitenews.com/p/hossam-sha...

BREAKING: Yuval Abraham, co-director of Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land," says Israeli settlers beat his co-director Hamdan Ballal, injuring his head and stomach — and then Israeli soldiers invaded the ambulance he was in and seized him. Ballal's whereabouts are now unknown.

Absolutely ghoulish, evil stuff happening every day. I struggle to process the deep malice here for vulnerable children in the US, layered on to the hundreds of thousands who will die of HIV worldwide due to Trump, Musk, and everyone around them. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/21/u...

Le Monde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to US after a search of his phone & computer revealed messages critical of Trump's science cuts, "which [says CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated

🧵 Last spring, as local officials were taking a closer look at the thousands of inmates in the Harris County Jail, they discovered something shocking: a man who had been locked up for 18 years without a trial. www.houstonchronicle.com/news/investi...

"The reason you should care about this is not that it could happen to you but that it is already happening to others. It is happening to people who, we claim, have rights just because we are human. It is happening to me, personally." www.nytimes.com/2025/03/17/o...

Texas legislators considering a bill that would put all public university course curricula and faculty hiring in the hands of ruling party political appointees and politicians, effectively ending academic freedom.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH
