every year my lab does a re-read + edit of our Handbook, a documentation resource for how we do science this year we also updated our Public Handbook, an open-access version for folks wanting to improve their own docs it's at handbook-public.themusiclab.org and available for noncommercial re-use

Exciting news - three years after visiting @amymlieberman.bsky.social in Boston for 6 wonderful weeks, our project on joint attention and sign familiarity in ASL has been published!

its amazing how chatgpt knows everything about subjects I know nothing about, but is wrong like 40% of the time in things im an expert on. not going to think about this any further

As we age, we move slower and less precisely—but how much, exactly? We analyzed one of the largest datasets on motor control to date—2,185 adults performing a reaching task. Findings • Reaction time: –1.2 ms/year • Movement time: –2.3 ms/year • Precision: –0.02°/year tinyurl.com/f9v66jut 1/2

those of us staring down the @bucld.bsky.social #BUCLD50 deadline feel seen.

I'm happy to share a new paper from my PhD research! Exciting work about how visual info helps us process sound, and an example of federal funding that benefits all of us - from your health to community health. doi.org/10.1152/jn.0... With @jmgrohneuro.bsky.social & Jesse Herche Thread: 🧵👇 1/10

Daz @drdazzy.bsky.social and I are current board members of SLLS (slls.eu/board/) and are seeking feedback about TISLR conferences Anyone who's interested in signed languages can respond even if you haven't been to TISLR. Please share widely! Thank you for your time! gu.live/RWCkP

Blind toddlers often experience language delays. Blind adults do not. In our new paper at @langdevres.bsky.social, we ask whether differences in language input could help them catch up: Do parents speak differently to blind children than sighted children? (Barely... read on for details) 🧪1/N

I had way too much fun making these 【 #openscience | #metascience | #opensource | #psychsky 】

Listen to @naomicaselli.bsky.social explain the results of this paper! We're so excited to have it out in the world 😊

Using 3 corpora of naturalistic speech to 0-3yo children, Wojcik & Goulding (2025) found highly freq & less concrete words more evenly distributed across time, allowing us to und how temporal dynamics affect word learning outside of lab #EarlyYears #DevPsySky #infancypapers doi.org/10.1111/infa...

teaching Language Acquisition, and students voted for an end-of-semester, not-on-the-exam lecture on duolingo (or other lang learning apps) anything you'd want to include? seminal studies? fun facts? controversies? students are juniors/seniors, very engaged, and a mix of neuro/ling/ASL backgrounds

1st results from the 1st ever Sign Language of the Netherlands CDI. Results for children's comprehension and production, reliably correlate with age. All the work of the extraordinary Jenni Sander and Dilys Eikelboom @jennisander.bsky.social

Out now in @pnas.org! 🌹Is a rose by any other name still as roselike?🌹 We study the prevalence of iconicity (does a word look/sound like what it means?) and systematicity (are pronunciation/meaning relationships shared across multiple words?) in large datasets of ASL, English, and Spanish. 🧵1/N

🧪 Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧵 On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE). The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases: "not subject to appeal"

New paper! @bonniemclean.bsky.social & Dingemanse 2025, A multi-methods toolkit for documentary research on ideophones — reviewing a diversity of methods and analytical approaches to the documentation of #ideophones. ideophone.org/new-methods-... ⛓️‍💥 PDF pure.mpg.de/pubman/item/... #iconicity

At 10pm Tuesday, I got notice that my 3yr IMLS grant was terminated. No reason given & termination *backdated* a week (I’m told the official termination is lost in the mail). This is absolutely devastating & totally meaningless. I can’t email my PO because the entire agency is on admin leave. 1/n

New R package almost birthed - SemanticDistance - computes two semantic distance metrics (experiential and embedding) for any rolling chunk size (ngram-to-ngram, word-to-word, turn-to-turn, ngram-to-word). You give it your language sample. It does the rest, including lemmatize and stopword omit
