Heads up on this vital 100 hour streaming marathon on the value of weather and climate expertise as National Weather Service struggles with staff shortages and reduction in service www.forbes.com/sites/marsha...

History does not repeat itself. But sometimes it rhymes. 1978; Poland on the brink… John Paul II, first Polish Pope elected. 2025; America on the brink… Leo XIV, first American Pope elected.

🚨 Hurricane season is coming—and the agency that keeps us safe is under attack. This Forbes piece breaks down why NOAA matters: from real-time storm warnings to life-saving research that protects every American.

Everyone should know about the neoreactionaries and their "intellectual leaders." They should not be dismissed and normalized as "merely" right-wing or conservative. They are against the Enlightenment, and, in many cases, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation.

Trump may argue the underlying science is a “hoax,” but it’s harder to make that case about job losses, vindictively withheld disaster relief funds, or reducing the amount of advance warning Americans receive before calamity hits. www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-migh...

@kdauenhauer.bsky.social You may not want to do this, since your domain isn't strictly your name. But I wanted to let you know about it in case you haven't seen it.

The notice that popped up today about verification coming to Bluesky also informed me of something I hadn't known about: self-verifying if you own a domain. I do. So now I'm @erinthead.com. And my bsky handle is still me, so you can use that too.

It's time to start reminding people: LILIES ARE DEADLY FOR CATS. The leaves, the petals, the stem, even drinking a bit of vase water or licking a few grains of pollen from their fur can cause fatal kidney failure. ⚠️ www.fda.gov/animal-veter...

THIS is how a professional organization should act. And I can't help but notice... AMS headquarters address: 45 Beacon Street Boston, MA 02108-3693 So much defiance coming from that area. Carrying on a proud legacy. ❤️✊ Anyway, read the whole statement. It's good.

If any broadcast/private sector folks want to help with what's going on... my idea: Show your audience what the weather show or one slide looks like without the NWS/NOAA. Blank. Show your clients/higher ups what products you can offer them w/o the NWS/NOAA. Nada.

In Pass Christian. Tide lowers just inches, & temporary islands are revealed. That's how shallow Gulf waters are here. & it's why Coastal Mississippi gets the most monstrous storm surges: shallow water=higher surge. This year is 20th anniversary of Hurricane KATRINA. What's this season gonna bring?

Our rising seas. This is only going to get harder to ignore. This NASA visualization was created by svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5520/

In a word, #Resist! Universities, law firms, and all manner of persecuted organizations should fight back. Individuals (and organizations) should speak up and speak out. Silence = assent. And we should support and join organizations that are doing the same. #StrongerTogether

"More than 1/3 of states have no statutory or regulatory requirement that a seller must disclose a property’s flood risks or past flood damages to a potential buyer. The other states have varying degrees of disclosure requirements." From NRDC, updated Aug. 2024: www.nrdc.org/resources/ho...

"In the midst of severe pressure on staffing and infrastructure driven by massive cuts to NOAA budgets this year, the National Weather Service persisted, issuing many dozens of lifesaving tornado and flash flood warnings." Potentially tornadic storm moving right over the Paducah KY radar and NWS office. Hoping it’s not producing. Folks, the staff there deserve all the love regardless. They have worked multiple tornado events this spring already and their office doesn’t even have functioning toilets!

Quick shots of the Lake City, AR #tornado from Brandon Copic’s live stream a few minutes ago. Unbelievable footage.

A rotational velocity signature of 113 kt and a deep tornado debris signature indicates this is likely an EF 3+ tornado in progress across northeast Arkansas. 100+ kt rotational velocity signatures are historically in the upper echelons of intense tornadoes.

One doesn't see this sort of thing very often. #ARwx #tornado

✈️🌧️I got a tip Wednesday night that the federal hiring freeze affects the meteorologists who help air traffic controllers with weather reports for flights in and out of the Bay Area. They are down to 1 meteorologist & can't rehire the three vacancies. @kqednews.kqed.org www.kqed.org/news/1203333...

Before Trump took office, states that voted for him were on track to receive nearly three-quarters of clean energy investments from the Inflation Reduction Act. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/03/clea...

From life-saving weather warnings and cancer treatments to tech breakthroughs, federally funded science drives progress. In an open letter, the AMS urges strong federal science funding to ensure our future. More: bit.ly/4j6rQGZ

NWS just announced a major reduction in upper-air (weather balloon) observations due to staffing shortages. Omaha and Rapid City losing balloon launches altogether, with launches cut in half at 6 other sites. Losing this many launches could affect severe weather forecasting and computer models.

And tonight, tomorrow, and every day is why we need NOAA/NWS. Kudos to these amazing meteorologists who work around the clock while short-staffed for the “protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy. “

Not the storm event to be reducing NWS staff, weather balloon launches and NOAA resources

Good to see that the 3 probationary crew members of the NOAA Hurricane Hunters that were fired have been rehired. But two other non-crew members that got fired did not get rehired. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

The outlines of a White House plan to produce a government science report that highlights the "benefits" of climate change is coming together. The intent is to expand presidential power, target regulations and fight litigation filed against fossil fuel companies. www.eenews.net/articles/tru...

Scoop: ~33% of NWS offices no longer have sufficient staffing to safely keep 24/7 operations. Critically understaffed @nws.noaa.gov offices now include: Boston Miami Houston Omaha Wichita Kansas City Marquette, MI Sioux Falls, SD Rapid City, SD Cheyenne, WY www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

More fallout from the indiscriminate NWS firings: "Effective immediately, and until further notice, the [NWS] is temporarily suspending some weather balloon launches in Albany, New York, and Gray, Maine, due to a lack of Weather Forecast Office (WFO) staffing." www.weather.gov/media/notifi...

In addition to being an atmospheric scientist, I'm also a software developer. I've been repairing computers (SW and HW) since I was a teen. When I faced a computer, whether my own or someone else's, with a software problem, I would look through the logs, identify the problem, and fix THAT PROBLEM.

My colleagues at NOAA said this move has been “paused” for the WPC, for now.

NEW: The Trump admin has informed NOAA that two buildings that are critical for weather forecasting will have their leases canceled. If this comes to pass, it's a really big deal. Includes weather fcst nerve center in College Park, Md.: www.axios.com/2025/03/03/d...

The Bay Area weather radar (KMUX) has been out of service for more than 24 hours now. An expensive broken part needs to be replaced and specially ordered, but that may not be possible due to ongoing freeze on government credit card spending, I’ve been told.
