Our brief take on what the new UK Data (Use and Access) Act will mean in practice. A departure from the #GDPR as we know it..? Not really. www.hoganlovells.com/en/publicati...

We devoted our usual Thursday DPaC London team training session today to the newly agreed Data (Use and Access) Act with the aim of identifying any changes that could realistically affect UK’s adequacy. Frankly we couldn’t find anything that departs from how the EU #GDPR works in practice today.

It’s taken a few years but recent experience involving the proposed deployment of #AI tools across all imaginable functions is turning data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) into one of the success stories of the #GDPR. Let me elaborate. Mini-🧵

While this will likely be a topic for discussion at the forthcoming #G7 Summit, let’s not forget that the same building blocks can serve as a basis for organisational responsible #AI strategies. www.linkedin.com/pulse/way-fo...

Just watching the debate of the UK Data (Use and Access) Bill and it’s interesting that all the discussion so far is on what is not really the focus of the Bill: copyright & #AI. The Government is adamant to emphasise that the creative & technology industries need to reach a practical compromise.

Another unmissable episode of our Data Chronicles podcast. This time, my colleagues dive into the murky waters of #adtech, #cookie consent and who is responsible for what. 🍪🫵🏻🤯 www.hoganlovells.com/en/publicati...

Is there a regulatory formula that will truly enable innovation to drive prosperity in the age of #AI? My suggested bulding blocks for a global approach to this challenge (originally published in @dataguidance.bsky.social #DPLeader). www.linkedin.com/pulse/way-fo...

To the delight of some and the frustration of others, @consilium.europa.eu plan of action for simplification of activities in digital regulations does not suggest dismantling frameworks like the GDPR or reversing laws like the AI Act. data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document...

Great summary of our recent UK #AI Summit highlighting how we, as lawyers, can contribute to the responsible and successful development and use of AI. www.linkedin.com/posts/hoganl...

“There is no one size fits all when dealing with China” compellingly argues Lord Clement-Jones CBE at joint ICO & APPG AI event explaining in a balanced way that there is room for caution in areas like cybersecurity but also cooperation in technological innovation.

“Privacy is a pre-condition for sustainable #AI adoption” argues Lord Clement-Jones CBE at joint ICO & APPG AI event.

Agentic #AI to become a key area of focus for the ICO, John Edwards tells us at APPG AI event.

“How can privacy power the AI revolution?” Fascinating question that we have come to address at joint ICO & APPG AI event hosted at the Houses of Parliament and introduced by Dawn Butler MP.

This is one of the most positive geopolitical developments of the recent months. The fact that all of these very diverse countries are constructively building a global baseline for the protection of personal data should not be underestimated.💡 www.hoganlovells.com/en/publicati...

Our annual Asia-Pacific #Data, #Privacy and #Cybersecurity Guide is always a key milestone to help understand the impact and evolution of digital regulation in the region. Kudos to our APAC team for sharing their expertise! hogan-lovells-lead.paperturn-view.com/hogan-lovell...

Back to London today, kicking off Hogan Lovells’ own UK #AI Summit with @thetimes.com Technology Business Editor @katieprescott.bsky.social telling us about the promise, the power & the perils of this transformative and evolving technology.

“We shouldn’t be afraid of changing regulation to address the evolving nature of technology” wisely says EDPS Wojciech Wiewiorowski at #CPDP2025, stressing that the important thing is that the principles aimed at protecting fundamental rights remain.

The #AI Act is meant to add value to the #AI ecosystem, not to create bureaucracy, compellingly argues @ec.europa.eu #AI Office Head Kilian Gross at #CPDP2025 putting efficiency alongside a high level of protection.

THANKS!!! @ec.europa.eu #AI Office Head Kilian Gross for dismissing at #CPDP2025 a wrong and long held myth that the #AI Act is product safety regulation. It is not, he says, emphasising that it is a framework essentially designed to protect fundamental rights.

Encouragingly, the European Court of Human Rights @echr.coe.int will continue to produce case law that is relevant #AI, @coe.int Hanne Juncher tells us at #CPDP2025

Emphasising the value of different backgrounds, @interdonde.bsky.social stresses at #CPDP2025 the fact that digital & #AI regulation is a team effort that will require some time and patience to get right.

“We are trying to learn from the mistakes of the past on enforcement”, says European Parliament’s @kzenner.bsky.social at #CPDP2025 speaking about the #AI Act and suggesting that a more coordinated approach to enforcement will be in place.

Thought provoking statement by @article19law.bsky.social Maria-Luisa Stasi at #CPDP25 who tells us that we will not have human centric #AI in a technological monopolistic environment.

Kicking off the annual @cpdpconferences.bsky.social event from the stage. #CPDP2025 #TheWorldisWatching #CPDP.ai

This is obviously a very positive development for many reasons, but also because it enhances the trust needed to discuss other common issues that every European country wants to get right, like the most effective approach to data & #AI regulation. Mini-🧵 www.gov.uk/government/p...

As #AI governance becomes more and more topical (as seen at #AIGG25 and at two separate events I’m contributing to in Brussels and London this coming week), I’m resurfacing this brief piece I wrote a year ago about how to pitch #AI governance to decision makers. www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-ai...

When you’re trying to have a nap and someone has other ideas…

Who in the audience says “please” and “thank you” when interacting with Chat-GPT? Everyone raises their hand. A revealing reflection at #AIG25 about our behaviour towards #AI when interacting with it. (BTW, glad to know I’m not a weirdo saying “please” and “thank you” to a machine…)

Interesting point being made at #AIGG25 panel on prompt engineering about how the correct use of prompts should be part of the #AI literacy efforts that all deployers of #AI are making.

Ireland’s #AI minister setting out the three pillars of the country’s #AI strategy at #AIGG25: 1️⃣ #AI for growth 2️⃣ Innovation ecosystem 3️⃣ #AI for citizens Can’t argue with that.

It seems as if the #privacy community is split this week between beautiful Venice and iconic Dublin, but can Venice really compete with the rotating harp-shaped bridge in Dublin..!??

We are becoming more familiar with the emerging #AI regulatory regime in Europe, but what about APAC? This piece by my local colleagues is an eye opener. www.hoganlovells.com/en/publicati...

Simple solutions to complex problems are always the best. (Greetings from Vancouver)
