Why throwing all potential predictors into your model and letting it decide has, and always will, be bad for inference.

A nice tutorial on distributed lag models using #rstats 📦 {mgcv}. But if you want to fit these to time series you might want to consider the {mvgam} 📦 instead ecogambler.netlify.app/blog/distrib...

"You may have seen a wind turbine in the sea before, but chances are you were looking at a “fixed” turbine – that is, one that sits on top of a foundation drilled into the seabed. For the new frontier of offshore wind power, the focus is on floating wind turbines.

I am so happy to share this new paper I co-wrote with colleagues at the USGS. It's a guide to predicting how nonmotorized recreation like hiking, skiing, mountain biking, etc. affects ungulates (hoofed mammals like deer, elk, moose, and pronghorn) to inform NEPA analyses. doi.org/10.3133/sir2...

Researchers in Costa Rica found that pig carcasses decomposed twice as fast when vultures had access to them. The absence of vultures led to a doubling of fly populations at carcass sites, which could affect human health, since these flies can carry diseases like botulism and anthrax.
