Today marks the eighth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire. We will always remember the 72 lives lost. In September 2024, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry concluded that Grenfell was the result of decades of deregulation, privatisation, and the prioritisation of profit over safety.

Firefighters Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler tragically lost their lives at the Bicester Motion fire on 15 May. Jennie's funeral procession will take place in Bicester today and there will be a minute's silence at 10am in her memory. Let us come together to honour her bravery and dedication.

7 year old Zane Gbangbola died in 2014 when floodwater passed through landfill into his family’s home. Surrey FRS detected high levels of hydrogen cyanide in Zane’s home. A 2010 report warned of an “unacceptable risk” of migrating gases from the landfill site - the site has still not been tested.

The FBU are demanding urgent funding for the fire and rescue service. This years central funding for English fire services is only 1.4%, lower than the current rate of inflation - a real terms funding cut. It's time for the government to commit serious, sustained funding to rebuild our resilience.

21 years ago today, Richard Jenkins lost his life in the line of duty. Richard was the first firefighter to enter a building on fire in Cardiff on Sunday, 23 May 2004. He was caught in an explosion when a gas canister caught fire. Today, #WeRemember Richard Jenkins.

60% of fire service workers have reported experiencing mental health problems. To put this into perspective, the red cards represent this shocking statistic. Delegates at this year's conference discussed the urgent need to improve mental health provision in the fire service.

The solidarity medal is the highest award given by the Fire Brigades Union. It is awarded to recognise or dispense solidarity, or specific acts of exceptional merit. Today, we awarded the medal to Jim Malone for his dedication to the trade union movement and the cause of freedom for Palestine.

FBU annual conference has a message for the government: fund our fire service. We need urgent investment to keep the public safe. But this year we got another real terms funding cut. It's time to reverse austerity.
