Meanwhile, on Twitter...

This is a great article. #China is smashing #Trump’s #US on this front: economically and geo-strategically. When people look back at this time they may well wonder how the #USA could’ve so spectacularly dropped the ball. Click on link to read… www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I just don't understand this. George W Bush, Barack Obama, and Bono just recorded videos commending the staff of USAID for their work and lamenting the agency's destruction... And those videos were not released to the public.

This is just an incredible story. A leadership team from Princeton University Press went on a propaganda tour in Xinjiang (strangely, in a subsequent public statement the press described some of the basic mechanics of a propaganda tour when defending its actions).

“The real question is, have we obliterated their desire to have a nuclear weapon?”Lindsay Graham told reporters. He's right. That is the real question. And the answer, I suspect, is no. If anything, they've only deepened it. www.washingtonpost.c...

. @npr.org's Aowen Cao went to a "data processing" center in China's rust belt...data which is feeding the artificial intelligence boom, and over which companies and countries are competing and hoarding. www.npr.org/2025/06/29/n...

In a less imperfect world, Musk and Trump would be forever cast as killers of children, and this would be front-page news for months and the subject of Sunday sermons in every church.

US signals intelligence picked up Iranian officials talking to each other — i.e. not communicating with the US nor putting on a show for their domestic audience — saying they thought the US bombing Iranian nuclear sites would've done more damage. Yet more indication the nuclear program survived.

This is a pretty tortured statement, but seems like PUP didn't intend to do a whitewashing tour of Xinjiang. Also it's honestly insane that they still trot out dancing minorities in trad garb to prove that things are going well via @jimmillward.bsky.social

BREAKING: Princeton University Press confirms its China office leadership took part in a state-led tour of Xinjiang. The team "remained cognizant of the region’s ongoing human rights atrocities," the statement notes. Their tour included dance performances and 'homestay' visits.

What’s the ideal age for the state to impose assimilation on minorities? In Tibet, it’s 4. Gift link to new long read from me and Niharika Mandhana Beijing's building of government-run preschools across Tibetan areas to reverse generations of opposition to party rule: www.wsj.com/world/china/...

Hungary banned anything that “promotes homosexuality,” which means Pride. However, today over 500,000 people in Budapest told the government to fuck off. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Late evening in Kyiv. Drones. Missiles are expected. I don’t know who’s listening to my monologue about the war. I had an ice cream. A funny thing - I always have one before attacks. A silly ritual.

Whacked on the BBC Glasto coverage to see what they were showing instead of Kneecap and caught Amy of Amyl & the Sniffers giving a pro Palestine speech... Beeb editors playing whack-a-mole

This is part of a Chinese state effort I have researched to reshape how international China scholars think and write about the PRC's governance of Xinjiang. If any editors out there are interested in publishing a piece on this feel free to reach out!

Worth a watch: Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

IDF soldiers have now themselves admitted they have been ordered to murder aid-seekers in Gaza. Truly an atrocity built on atrocity. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

"Israeli soldiers in Gaza told Haaretz that the army has deliberately fired at Palestinians near aid distribution sites..." www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

The new cafe/bar/restaurant area behind the old Friendship Store in #Beijing is really cool. #China.

New: It’s absurd and embarrassing in a liberal democracy to have to say this, but people shouldn’t be punished for protesting against genocidal oppression, or speaking about it. So many cultural institutions have done this very thing though - and damaged themselves in the process.

完全同感!

Two episodes into Andor and I am hooked. Why didn’t anybody tell me about this sooner?

Okay, that's pretty good.

Australians impacted by Facebook's Cambridge Analytica can now file to get their part of a $50m settlement. You can claim if you used FB in Australia between November 2013-December 15, if you or a friend had the 'Life' app, and you suffered loss or damage www.oaic.gov.au/news...

European capitals believe Iran’s stockpile of 408 kilogram of uranium enriched close to weapons-grade levels was not concentrated in Fordow, one of its two main enrichment sites, at the time of last weekend’s attack. Oops. www.ft.com/content/0...

Part of the reason that China has been able to dominate global supplies of rare earths at competitive prices is because, as well as being rich in natural resources, it has also been willing to let poor, rural people bear the brunt of the toxic, dirty work, writes Amy Hawkins

European market for EVs rose by 25% last month. European sales of Teslas went down 28% Who can say why? ( apnews.com/article/tesl...) (Apart from the obvious explanation, Tesla used to be the innovative leader. Now a stale product line—except for Cybertruck!!!)

It's almost like the genius coders didn't know what they were doing.

Let's goooooooooooooooooo!

Earlier today a Dutch internet service provider went down for hours as NATO summit began. In France, hopefully unrelated, the main public weather service has been down for hours, and the public radio site is buggy as hell. Have never encountered either issue despite using these sites for years.

This is the kind of kook-ball stuff that everyone - including Israelis - should be worried is guiding U.S. foreign policy.
