Ballhead waterleaf (Hydrophyllum capitatum). 130 million years of angiosperms and finally one species had the thought: "Hey why go through all the bother of putting the flowers on top? This seems good enough.", and called it a day. Ochoco NF, Oregon 6/20/2025

balloon-pod milk-vetch (Astragalus whitneyi) The flower envelopes the seed, forming an air filled sac around it, which then tumbleweeds to a new home. I'm presuming this means that, evolutionarily, the seeds tasted like rank ass so bad that no animal would touch them. Ochoco NF, Oregon, 6/18/2025

Spotted Coralroot, with a closeup of one of the flowers. The interwebs say they parasitize russula mushrooms. No judgement, I've been known to do the same on occasion. Willamette National Forest, 5/26/2025

Fairy slippers, Aka Acid demons. To me they look like nightmares that will bite at unsuspecting ankles in the woods, dissolving your flesh in seconds so they can slurp up what remains of your feet. Or slippers I guess. No one got around to asking me what to name them. 04/26/25 Mary's Peak, Oregon

Well if someone's all grumpy about their picture being taken then maybe someone shouldn't have come waltzing onto my front lawn...

Things are looking a bit monochromatic today...

Pika at East McFarland lake, Oregon, August 2024. The lake has a really big talus field, and plenty of pikas who chirped at me the whole time in quadraphonic stereo to get off their goddamn lawn. Crotchety little buggers.
