Danger no refuge holds, and war no peace, For him who hears love sing and never cease, Beside her clean-swept hearth, her quiet shade: But gather all for whom no love hath made A woven silence ... The Rose of Battle WB Yeats

You couldn't move in parts of Dublin, Ireland, today, I'm told, for the throngs of certified Ulysses readers in the streets. It was like a Fair Day, only for the gentry.

I've just counted the number of pens on my desk: 87. How is anyone expected to work with only 87 pens?

Every day. Deliberate massacres of unarmed, starving civilians. The world does nothing. A shame on all of us. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

By coincidence I was passing Tuam today as the hoarding went up around the Mother & Baby Home site. A discreet and respectful veil. It’s 11 years since I took this photo of Catherine Corless at her kitchen table. I rang her today just to say hi. 🧵

There is a heart on the wall for every person who died of covid in this country, whether or not it has writing on it. We will never forget them. ❤️ #Monday

I live in a world where I am supposed to just accept that this sentence exists

Heartening thread 👇

I drive up the country today and was frequently delighted by state agencies flying pride flags. First nice surprise was Teagasc opposite the big new services on the M8 Fermoy, pictured below. Then there was one flying with all the other international flags at the exit to Dublin Airport.

My map of independent children's bookshops is updated regularly. Most provide an online service and they're all run by people who can make well-informed book recommendations. If we want to keep them, we need to support them. Any missing, please let me know. padlet.com/Jon_Biddle/r...

This is probably my favourite review of Ulysses. #Bloomsday

New German night train provider plans to connect '100 European cities' A new startup has announced plans to set-up overnight rail connections between numerous central European cities, with passengers riding in private cabins and for a price comparable to a plane ticket.

Same. I’ve probably got a couple of quid in loose change down the back of the sofa.

Yeah, Othello’s just about being careful where you put your handkerchief, isn’t it?

This monster of a Californian rose, Rosa nutkana ‘Plena’ flowers only once and it suckers everywhere, but I forgive it for a few weeks every summer. The scent is permeating my whole front garden.

I'll stop quoting Bertrand Russell in a second (might not) but his explanation of the psychology of the far-left is astonishingly on point. He wrote this over 100 years ago. Absolutely nothing has changed.

‘But it’s no use, says he. Force, hatred, history, all that. That’s not life for men and women, insult and hatred. And everybody knows that it’s the very opposite of that that is really life. What, says Alf Love, says Bloom. I mean the opposite of hatred.’ My favourite quote from #Ulysses #Bloomsday

A fibula (pin for fastening garments) in the shape of a #frog. Animal-shaped fibulae were popular in the northwestern provinces of the Roman empire. It has been suggested that frogs had an apotropaic value (i. e. to avert evil), but there is no evidence for this. 📷Morgan Library 🏺#archaeology

"i asked grok" "i asked chagpt" yeah well I asked a rare books librarian and they found things I didn’t even know I was looking for, while answering questions about provenance

Some amazing news!

Refugees have contributed to the rich tapestry of London—as neighbours, workers, carers, creators, athletes, businesspeople and friends. This Refugee Week, London not only stands strong as a bastion against hate, but shines bright as a beacon of hope and sanctuary.

For so long, people thought that requiring logic, accountability, and proof were so inevitable, they needed "disruption." Now, we're going to relearn how fragile architectures for realizing any intention bigger than (or averse to) short-term capital and political power grabs really are.

Because nature, libraries, and people are diverse. Happy Pride month! #pride #PrideMonth #LGBTQ

Following my complaint, the Telegraph has amended the inaccurate statement that "48% of social housing in London has a non-British head of household". www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/teleg...

Why John le Carré’s work is more relevant than ever: “He is not an idealist—he knows these men and women are doomed—but an existentialist who dramatizes the necessity of individual struggle.”

Britain's most comically illiterate headmistress strikes again. I mean... How could one find opportunities to discuss racism, in the context of Othello and The Merchant of Venice, or sexism, while teaching The Taming of The Shrew and Twelfth Night?

The thing is that our students all KNOW this stuff is making them stupider—& many of them resent it. But every signal in their lives, including the entire media apparatus *& their own university leadership*, is telling them nothing matters, why not use it, if you don’t, you’re getting ‘left behind’

I've always thought it was weird that you only hear "But models!" with climate change. Literally nobody's ever said, "Hedge funds don't really make all that money bc they're just using models."
