“Thinking is difficult, that is why most people judge.” -Carl Jung

“When we are tired, we are attacked by ideas we conquered long ago.” -Friedrich Nietzsche

“All cruelty springs from weakness.” -Seneca

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” -Mark Twain

“When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” -Ernest Hemingway

I haven’t been posting my philosophy board lately because I’ve had a lot going on personally and professionally (most of it good). Rest assured that I am alive and will return.

“Sometimes in philosophy we like to ask obvious questions and waggle our eyebrows suggestively, like maybe you don’t exist after all, hmm? but bro, this is not one of those times. I should obviously jump in and SAVE THIS FUCKING CHILD’S LIFE.” -Philosophy Bro on Peter Singer’s Drowning Child

“Compassion is the basis of morality.” -Arthur Schopenhauer

I want to sprinkle in some Philosophy bro in addition to my normal inspirations because, one, he’s hilarious, and two, he’s remarkably accurate in his off-color analyses of philosophical work, and three, I think he helps market philosophy as a subject. So, I hope you all enjoy!

Have you ever seen a guy acting like an asshole and thought, “What a fucking asshole?” Well, Spoiler Alert: You’re an asshole too. -Philosophy Bro www.philosophybro.com/archive/hobb...

“A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.” -Greek Proverb

“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.” -Sun Tzu

Found on Instagram, but it’s a great quote.

“The past does not only draw us back to the past. There are certain memories of the past that have strong steel springs and, when we who live in the present touch them, they are suddenly stretched taut and then they propel us into the future.” -Yukio Mishima

“One must be a sea, to receive a polluted stream without becoming impure.” -Friedrich Nietzsche Saw this one out of context, but it resonates in the current climate of propaganda.

I often reflect on the US Constitution as a philosophical document. Today, I reread Amendment XIV, Section 1: 1/3

"Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” -Oscar Wilde

“Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.” -J.R.R. Tolkien

“To have courage for whatever comes in life—everything lies in that.” -Teresa of Avila

“When you understand that every opinion is a vision loaded with personal history, you will begin to understand that all judgement is confession.” -Nikola Tesla

“Let me embrace thee, sour adversity, for wise men say it is the wisest course.” —William Shakespeare, Henry VI Surprise! I was also an English major. Suck it, STEM! 😉

I try to stick to philosophy here, but reality and ethics are a big part of that. Misinformation is antithetical to a philosopher’s purpose.

Also, regarding James Hutton, the quote I used is also featured in Bad Religion’s “No Control,” which is a great punk song that doesn’t get enough credit.

I was thinking about a quote made in terms of geologic time, but it also applies to the human experience: “There’s no vestige of beginning, no prospect of an end.” -James Hutton

A thought on courage in relation to world events: fire academy did a lot to beat my fears out of me (heights and confined spaces to name a couple). My key to success was very simple: focus on the task. Transitioning onto a roof 60 feet up is kind of terrifying; I did it by looking at the rungs.

One of the biggest problems I had as a student was studying Martin Heidegger because he was explicitly an unrepentant Nazi. I found Being and Time almost incoherent (side note: PhilosophyBro does a hilarious summary of this work), and I had a lot of sometimes heated discussions about ad hominem. 1/

Found this one today while scrolling. It resonates pretty hard these days.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy" -Martin Luther King Jr.

“Education is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” -Aristotle

"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” -Carl Jung

“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” -Joseph Campbell

“Be scrupulously truthful, even if the truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.” -Bertrand Russell

A little philosophy that stuck with me from Firefly/Serenity (if you’ve never seen them, go watch!): “If you can’t do something smart, do something right.”

And, just when you think you had a bad start to the New Year, you read about New Orleans. Horrible tragedy. My thoughts are with the victims.

Started the New Year with a long night. I have no sympathy for perpetrators of domestic violence; they are truly the worst among us.

My shift philosophy posts have been interrupted by some family priorities, but I will be back soon. It’s times like these where having a good grasp on the human condition (I.e. philosophy degree) really helps one manage grief and trauma. For some reason, it’s always Nietzsche for me.

Some humor for you. I did not make this, and I don’t know who did, but it makes me laugh way more than it should.

“Hell is truth seen too late.” -Thomas Hobbes

Sorry, haven’t done a board in a week: working at a different station for the holidays. I’ll do a virtual board here next shift.

Today’s board: “The best way out is always through.” -Robert Frost (If you’re in a structure fire, however, I suggest you follow the hose line, smooth-bump-bump 👨🏻‍🚒)

I’m getting to a point where I’m running out of good one-liners from philosophers, and I’m going to have to start re-reading books here. 🤓
