In the hit online game Helldivers 2 there is an event where aliens are invading Earth. The last 2 cities are in China and Sweden and the Chinese player base are uniting everyone to defend the Chinese megacity, Equality on Sea (Shanghai). The memes are wild

We talked about Star Wars. A lot.

A few days ago, President Trump issued an executive order seeking to block all federal funding to NPR, the latest in a series of threats to media organizations across the country.

the slopification of the internet is accelerating by the day, and this week the same forces that have ruined everything else came for polygon and giant bomb. on this week's aftermath hours, we mourn what was

look you know I rarely have a good word to say about the political press in America but lets not excuse the voters themselves here.

New occasions teach new duties, via David Brooks: "I’m really not a movement guy. I don’t naturally march in demonstrations or attend rallies that I’m not covering as a journalist. But this is what America needs right now." I'm there with him.

Man there's so little tactical detail for the Battle of Endor. It's mostly isolated micro-tactical anecdotes and throw-away lines. The Rebel Alliance beat the Imperial Navy in a set-piece fleet engagement that the latter had spent its entire existence planning for. That's worth breaking down IMO.

This is a factor in the epiphanies people think they're having from Rednote or ISeeSpeed streams. If you're vaguely familiar with China, nothing there is remotely surprising, but if your picture of authoritarianism is a boot *constantly* stamping on *every* human face, it feels like a revelation.

Trump is not a realist: iai.tv/articles/fra...

When I read the details of what ICE did in this case—showing up at the house of a young protestor’s parents, texting them out of the blue—a wave of familiarity washed over me. It eerily reminds me of the way China seeks to intimidate student activists and journalists

You cannot make this shit up. Sharing this jaw-dropping story with a gift link -- give it a read.

Chuck Schumer Helps Pull Democrats Back From Brink Of Courage

Republicans: [hands giant piece of their constitutional authority and dignity to Trump] Trump: [cackling, starts to walk off] A DOOR SLAMS OPEN. The DEMOCRATS are standing tall in the door, their shadows cast long and defiant. Chuck Schumer: STOP! Trump: ? Schumer: you forgot this piece

RIP Sir Terry Pratchett, March 12, 2015. Hard to believe it's been 10 years, and somehow all too appropriate that he died right as the world began to go mad. For anyone who hasn't read his work, I'd highly recommend it. #GNU Terry Pratchett.

This is looking so gooooood. youtu.be/feJSTZRRaFQ?...

Gotta admit, the guy was considered a joke when I was studying IR back in the early 2010s. We were all wrong.

The rush to call this realism seems to me willfully ignorant of Trump's personality, the ideology around him and his actual words. Ideological alignment is a lot more plausible: Trump's impulse is authoritarian and he wants to align the USA with states that are more like how he wants the USA to be.

Back when I was studying for my MA at the University of Kent one of my professors (Ruth Blakeley) pointed out that we should never assume linear historical progression when it comes to human rights, freedoms, and the democratic tradition. Her words in 2016 were “We could be at the high point”.

One of the most frustrating elements of this presidency, aside from what it's actually doing, is the total inability of the media to give context to anything Trump does. The news is mostly "Trump does X" alongside his own obviously skewed reasons for why.

Upon receiving the news that four of the City's Deputy Mayors have submitted their resignations, I sent the following letter to @nycmayor.

NEW: At least three more DOJ Public Integrity Unit senior officials have resigned after meeting with Emil Bove on the Eric Adams case. Five in Public Integrity overall. That’s six officials who resigned, triple the number that happened during the Saturday Night Massacre.

Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges. This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.

Since I am raging angry, I have to say I am also disgusted and grossed out by all the leftwing assholes who spread russian propaganda, now crawling out to pose as pro-Ukraine, just cause Trump is president now. Fuck you especially. We will never forget.

I've been revisiting Andor and one of the many things that's brilliant about the show is how consistent it is at conveying Cassian's "superpower" of paying attention to details in the world around him. It's subtle through the entire series, but this small part of the finale spells it out.

Americans were unused to the news happening to them. They hated the news happening to them during the pandemic, and thus voted to make it 2019 again by science or magic. And now the news is going to happen to them again very badly.

The Zero Fighter gets the spotlight but some of the most elite Japanese crews were bombers. Join @justinpykehistory.bsky.social and me as we discuss the Japanese bomber force from their (poor) showing over China to the WW2 transformation. Ep. 2: youtu.be/nRdeK7xw5wM

A telltale sign of an authoritarian regime, as I understand it, is the separation of the state and its people. Fascist leaders demand their citizens to make sacrifices for the good of the nation, implying that the nation is not comprised of its citizens, but something that reigns above.

I dug into Elon Musk's gaming streams to try to figure out what his rig is and every single choice pissed me off even more. For @aftermath.site aftermath.site/does-elon-mu...

I’ve noticed something similar in a lot in the press - there seems to be a reticence to use the word “soldier” and instead media defaults to “fighter” or “warfighter”. I’m guessing it’s a legacy of the war on terror, where irregular forces were the norm, but I’ve always found it strange.
