every fucking time

Take care of yourself, friends. That's first and foremost. You didn't break the world. You're not going to unbreak it by breaking yourself. We're all going to have to find places to lend our efforts. But remember yourself. You're important.

“Our study of #MECFS symptoms in two cohorts with different recruitment strategies demonstrates that…a clinically significant group of individuals with #LongCOVID exhibit a phenotype consistent with #MECFS” www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

Remember the eclipse back in April? Since eclipses are rare I practiced camera settings and timing... then changed travel plans, watched the weather like a hawk, and ended up driving quite a bit. It all worked out. I'm proudest of this image and would love to do projects like this more often.

TL;DR C19 probably thins your bones and makes you prone to broken bones. The cytokines that fight infection mediate the changes. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

This is so cool! Retrotransposons activate during pregnancy to force a swift creation of new RBCs. An example of "junk DNA" being incredibly useful. And yes, interesting re: cases of #MECFS after pregnancy or recovery after pregnancy. 🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Long COVID patients experience lower serotonin levels because of reduced tryptophan absorption, which can result in symptoms like brain fog and memory loss. The serotonin disruption also impacts vagus nerve signaling, further contributing to long COVID symptoms. www.pennmedicine.org/news/news-re...

For anyone interested in the pathophysiology of MECFS there’s a nice infographic here from this article; www.jci.org/articles/vie... LOTS more research needs to be done of course. In clinical practice the vascular dysregulation is something I very much recognise 🧵

Twitter provocateurs (or, “assholes”) are joining en masse, so it’s a good time to remind you that blocking here is easy, fun, and nuclear. Heated discourse is great and can educate people, but there’s simply no point in entertaining anyone who’s just looking to cause harm.

Yesterday I published threads to help new arrivals make their experience more pleasant than on X or Threads. Here, I want to explain Bluesky Labels and demonstrate how to use Labels to automatically hide posts with Xitter screenshots, combat misogynoir, build community, and more. A 🧵

The news is terrible, but the Variable Neon Slug (Nembrotha kubaryana) looks like this ↓ and that's not nothing. Found in the Western Indo-Pacific Ocean region, it can grow up to 4 in (10 cm) long. They feed primarily on ascidians (sea-squirts)... (📷: Steve Childs, Flickr)

This is really *the* problem in terms of breaking through to people. Look at this data. Republicans answered more incorrectly on all 4 current events questions posed. I'm sure Canada has some parallels. Post-reality politics is hard because the very premise of a conversation can be hallucinated.

You weren't stupid for believing people would make better choices

I finally did it and got a new GoPro so I can start making slow tv walking videos. I tested it out at my local park so if you need a calm 5 minutes through an autumnal wetland with some crows, here you go. Hopefully more, longer walks to come soon as I figure this out! youtu.be/BOJ2zNHr6HA?...

People literally have to say stupid ass shit like "I would simply not live in the path of an unstoppable natural disaster" because otherwise they would be forced to face the chaos inherent to this world. The idea that everything just happens to you for no reason is too scary for the average person

I just took a survey that would have benefited from the modified 2-D Likert scale I just invented

ICYMI: You can make yogurt with ants. 🐜

Going through all my older videos to find things to share, so here's a hooded nudibranch underwater!

Men, I have a request. Before replying to a woman's post, see if most (or all) of the other replies have been from men. If so, ask yourself why. Women have thoughts, why are only men sharing theirs? Then ask yourself, is my thought really crucial enough to add to this overflowing man-thought pile?

Maybe the best feature of BlueSky is how, when you block someone, it doesn't just close a door, it leaves a smoking crater where they were standing, in which the ashes are so fine, future archeologists won't be able to say with certainty that there was a person there.

A "mile" is derived from Latin "mīlle passus" or "1000 steps" & was defined as the distance a legion would travel with 1000 double steps (left/right pace), which was 5000 'Roman feet', where pace = 5 feet. The *foot* was Marcus Agrippa's. So a mile is a decimal unit for steps with SI traceability!
