Excited to announce that I’m hosting a Smashing Workshop on dataviz accessibility this autumn! Spread over 5 sessions, we’ll cover #DatavizA11Y fundamentals, and how to test, document, design, and develop accessible charts 📈 #accessibility #dataviz Info & tickets: smashingconf.com/online-works...

Back under the midnight sun ☀️

If you’re looking for actionable dataviz/web accessibility reviews, consulting or training, I have some availability opening up from October onwards 💪🏻 And! The work will be done from an island at 70°N, surrounded by whales, 100.000s of birds, and a lot of weather 💨🌊 Interested? DM or fossheim.io

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

This is how fights start. Stop using divs to make buttons and links. If it changes the URL in any way, use an <a>. If a fuction is called that doesn't change the URL, use a <button>

Our drive up north has started 😱

moving out: done ✅ tomorrow the (looong) drive to our new place starts, and then from next week onwards we'll be living in the northernmost part of Norway 🐋☀️

if pigeons can survive in a cold world that despises them then so can you

Don't mess with zooming on a website. Don't mess with scrolling on a website. Don't mess with default cursors on a website. Don't mess with the default Tab order. Don't mess with the back button in the browser. Thank you.

I cannot stress to you enough how genuinely important this part of our care and feeding instructions is.

One response to my critique of Figma (and Figma Sites): “Any good designer would look into the accessibility and wait to use it.” I asked why they felt comfy holding individuals to that standard, but not a large company with infinitely more resources. Didn’t get an answer.

in 2014 after I started working in tech designers started saying that one day in the next few years design tools would publish websites and front-end devs would become obsolete. 11 years later, code by figma sites:

Currently in the south of the country taking a course in something that will hopefully let me combine bird and data nerding: bird ringing 🐦‍⬛💍 First class starts before 6am tomorrow 😵‍💫

Some people may be unable to use a mouse, and instead rely exclusively on keyboards, or use assistive technologies such as speech recognition, head pointers, mouth sticks, or eye-gaze tracking systems. If a website is accessible only to mouse users, these people will be excluded.

we’re moving to the other side of the country in two months, so we’re selling our home in center Grünerløkka. If you’re in #Oslo and looking to buy (or think you know someone who is), let me know and I’ll forward the link 💪🏻 2 bedroom, balcony, separate kitchen, large bathroom, 70sqm floorspace.

Woahh!! @ashleemboyer.com just let me know that an accessibility and visualization fireside chat (below, 2021) I was a participant in (with the legends @amycesal.com, Øystein Moseng, @fossheim.bsky.social, and @tink.uk) was cited and quoted in @merbroussard.bsky.social's book "More than a Glitch."

haven't been very active on social media lately because I've been busy with another project: our upcoming move to the arctic 🩵 last week we finally found a house, which we'll take over in May, and move into in June. This is so exciting 🤩

URGENT request for help: I need to build a case (soon) that justifies the "broader impact" of my research (yes, this is related to recent events in the US). If you have ever used Chartability or Data Navigator in your work in any capacity, I would love to know! Please email ([email protected]) or dm me.

This looks like a fantastic (and FREE!) #a11y workshop organized by the lovely folks at @smashingmagazine.com and featuring some *amazing* experts: @stephaniewalter.bsky.social @fossheim.bsky.social Kardo Ayoub Sadly, I'm not able to attend, but you should! smashingconf.com/meets-access... #ux

"Disabled users don't use my website" is a cop-out and a lie. There's no way to know how many assistive technology users are using your site. You can't confidently exclude a large portion of the world's population that has a disability by claiming none of them use your site.

Don't forget to register for your free ticket to Smashing Meets Accessibility, streaming on Thursday February 20th at 8AM PT (4PM GMT). @geoffgraham.me will be hosting talks from @fossheim.bsky.social, @stephaniewalter.bsky.social, and Kardo Ayoub. smashingconf.com/meets-access... #Accessibility

Make sure that interactive elements that can be accessed by using a mouse, pen, trackpad or touch are at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels. This helps people with low vision and/or limited motor control select the intended element without accidentally selecting nearby elements.

A sign that accessibility and data viz is important: the most downloaded episode of the Data Stories Podcast ( @moritzstefaner.bsky.social @ebertini.bsky.social ) is the episode about accessibility with the amazing @fossheim.bsky.social Check out the data: observablehq.com/@moritzstefa...

Earlier today #cssday 2025 ticket sales opened. The going is brisk; early birds will likely sell out today. cssday.nl/tickets.html

USA peeps, please figure out how to navigate the ongoing crisis/coup in a way that keeps you as healthy as possible. Do not listen to the scolds who tell you you have to rage 24hrs/day or you are complying. Pace yourself. Have a nice meal, laugh with friends, discuss a book. This will be a long haul

I'm studying for the CPACC, any tips? #CPACC #IAAP #accessibility

I’m taking on new clients this year, and have some availability opening up in spring. Offering: - Dataviz/web accessibility services - Detailed or high-level actionable accessibility reviews - Accessibility training - Front-end development More info: fossheim.io/work #dataviz #accessibility

Color can be a great way to distinguish data points in charts. But don't rely on color alone to convey information, as that can make things difficult for colorblind users. Using different shapes or patterns can help. Make sure patterns or textures are simple and not distracting.

Things I want to happen when I click "unsubscribe" in an email: - unsubscribe me Things I don't want: - login to "manage my preferences" - unsubscribe me from [obscure list 1 of 17] - email me again to ask if I unsubscribed by accident (it's never by accident)

People who want to make the web accessible need to understand the many different ways that people with disabilities use the web. This W3C resource offers a good introduction to how disabled people navigate the web, and barriers they commonly encounter. www.w3.org/WAI/people-u...

Male and female gulls look identical, but it’s possible to tell the difference based on the size of the head and bill 🤓 That’s how we learned that balcony gull Gloria, who recently got measured & ringed, is actually a boy! Blog: fossheim.photography/blog/2025-01... #ornithology #birdPhotography

"Everybody - wake up! It's the #BigGardenBirdwatch!" Will you be taking part today? 👀🌳

If you'd like to support my work like this thread, I don't have a paid newsletter YET. But I'm currently fundraising for my family's February bills so I can build and launch it! Latest progress update: $1,616 / $3000 53.9% to goal More #TheAccessibilityPond info: ashleemboyer.com/blog/help-me...

If you pardon hundreds of violent neo-nazis and give your un-elected BFF a platform to give a Nazi salute (twice) during your inauguration, then you’re a neo-nazi. This is not hyperbole. Dismissing it or excusing it is enabling neo-nazis, their violent past, *and* their violent future.

The TikTok ban, the Musk Twitter takeover, the Facebook moderation policy changes, the Republicans’ rapidly intensifying crackdowns on speech... let these be the proof you needed to move anything you care about online to a space you control. Digital sovereignty is more important than ever.

Pixelfed as an instagram alternative for wildlife photography: yes/no, and anyone has good server recommendations? Kinda tempted to just stick to my own website, and the occasional sharing to mastodon/BlueSky/flickr though 🤔

A white-tailed eagle started scouting the area for prey, which caused the auks to flee their cliff in a panic. But not this one bridled individual, who bravely and proudly made their way back to the nest with their own fresh meal 🎣 #birdPhotography #wildlife #birds

Next month I'll be talking about common dataviz accessibility mistakes and what we can do to prevent them, at Smashing Meets Accessibility ✨ It's online and free to attend: smashingconf.com/meets-access...

Meet the Arctic Tern, a bird that breeds in the arctic and overwinters in the antarctic, completing a distance similar to 3+ roundtrips to the moon in its lifetime. And if you ever met one, you probably understand why I call them Arctic Terrors instead 😰 #birdPhotography #birds #photography
