This is Akerselva that runs through my home city. It is now the green heart of Oslo but as recently as the 1970s the river was heavily contaminated after 150 years of industrial & sewage discharge. In the 1980s, a local initiative to limit emissions & revive the river flora & fauna began.

Whereas in Britain we associate the acrobatic Blue tit w deciduous woodland & leafy gardens, in Norway it's often found feeding upside down in pines. There must be food to be had among the needles & cones. Bygdøy. Fun fact: Research suggests Blue tits have episodic memory not unlike humans!

According to a certain Mr. Peterson, the country of Holland decided to "scrape land" out of the ocean after WW2 to avoid ever experiencing a famine again. Now class, who can point out the errors in this claim? I'll get the gold star stickers.

This is probably the last of the male Hairy-footed Flower Bees (Anthophora plumipes) we'll see in 2025. Photo'd yesterday and looks very different to the brown characters when they first appear. Still 3 females around yesterday. @brigitstrawbridge.bsky.social @liamolds.bsky.social

🎉 HUGE NEWS: The EU Court has confirmed marine protected areas must be PROPERLY protected from bottom trawling! Countries must act to fulfil their legal duty to safeguard these areas from destruction. This is an absolute WIN for our ocean. 🙌 1/2 www.clientearth.org/latest/press...

Outstanding news 🦪🐙🦀🦞🦐 A massive step forward in protecting ocean wildlife 👏👏👏

Now that I have young Squash & Courgette & later Pumpkin tucked into my mini greenhouse repurposed 5litre plastic bottles on my #allotment I decided to learn more about the history of domestication of the great Cucurbita family .. & what a fascinating history it is! www.thoughtco.com/domesticatio...

Safe for all? How austerity wrecked the probation service Austerity broke it: the probation service in England and Wales is now rated “inadequate” after years of cuts, chaos and failed privatisation.

Yesterday, 35 people were burned alive in an attack by Israeli forces in Gaza. They were mostly women & children. All sheltering in a school. A war crime of unimaginable horror. And NOTHING on these front pages. Genocide needs silence & apathy to thrive.

It's the last Minke May Monday! Today we're sharing this otherworldly photo of a minke whale about to surface. If you look closely, you'll see a white band across the whale's pectoral flipper. These are affectionally known by whale watchers as "minke mittens". 📷: Melisa Pinnow, San Juan Excursions

There is little, it seems, as strong as self-delusion on the far-right 🙄

A real privilege to be speaking with writer & activist @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social at #Brighton Festival today: “Hope is an embrace of the unknown & unknowable…it’s the belief that what we do matters even tho how & when it may matter, who & what it may impact, are not things you can know beforehand”

I’ve always wanted to capture it, but never dreamt I’d be fortunate enough. But this morning I just happened on a bit of luck, and when you’re at the cliffs before 6am there are few people around to share the moment with (other than these guys, obviously) 🫣😊❤️🥰 #birds #ukwildlife

We cannot compete with the vast sums JK Rowling has to spend on her war on a tiny minority and civil society organisations that want to promote inclusivity. But @goodlawproject.bsky.social is the UK's biggest defender of trans rights. If you'd like to support our work there's a link in my bio.

High-fives to my #allotment where the meadow-maker Yellow Rattle is now in flower, only repurposed plastic items can be reused (plot right side of the Globe Artichoke is not mine!), the plum tree is loaded with young Victorias & its buzzing even on a cool & breezy day!

It’s time to resolve the issues of access to the English countryside once and for all. That must mean legislating for a widespread right to roam covering land and water, which removes access islands, allows responsible wild camping in national parks and increases connectivity to nature for everyone👇🏻
