Still time to apply to the #CESAB IdeaShare & DataShare call to advance BIODIVERSITY research & interdisciplinary collaboration πŸ’‘ IdeaShare: develop new concepts, models & methods πŸ“Š DataShare: assemble, curate & share biodiversity datasets πŸ“† deadline: september 2025 πŸ‘‰ bit.ly/4loI2oI 🌐πŸ§ͺ🌍🦀🍁

Why throwing all potential predictors into your model and letting it decide has, and always will, be bad for inference.

Microbial communities can harbor many species that do not coexist in pairs, yet can coexist in the full community. Here we provide the mathematical foundations of emergent coexistence, and explain why it can't be predicted from pairwise tests www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Our last paper: β€˜Sampling biases across interaction types affect the robustness of ecological multilayer networks’ just out in Ecological Informatics. You can find it here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ec... We show that missing data can have complex effects when modeling network dynamics.

Pollinator decline has captured global attention, but another plant-animal mutualism is quietly unraveling. Our new Nature Reviews Biodiversity article synthesizes global evidence on seed disperser decline and what it means for plant biodiversity, ecosystem recovery, and climate adaptation. 🧡

Ever wondered why some charts are more effective and engaging than others? I’ll be going through all the theory, evidence and principles behind compelling data storytelling from this Wednesday. Free to watch for anyone who is interested: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-fundam...

Mastering typefaces and fonts in #rstats has always been harder than it should. I have tried to collect much of my relevant knowledge in this deep-dive blog post so you can spend your time picking the right typeface instead of cursing at the computer

Since we are still talking about interactions, I worked with some ecologists a couple of years ago on measurement scale, interactions and interpretation issues. I think some problems arise from failure to distinguish prediction from inference, a chronic problem in ecology imo doi.org/10.1111/brv....

Thanks to everybody who chimed in! I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist. So, I made it myself! Here's a simple illustration of how to control for confounding in interactions:>

Join our macroecology team @unipotsdam! Lead research on biodiversity dynamics, develop cutting-edge models, and teach the next generation. Apply now for this full-time position. www.uni-potsdam.de/fileadmin/pr...

Another example of why having access to a paper’s code and data is important

Choose Science. Choose Europe. A new Marie SkΕ‚odowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025 call is now open. With a budget of €404.3 million, it will support around 1,650 researchers from Europe and beyond. Apply by 10 September β†’ europa.eu/!fBTMgF

A few months until the end of my postdoc contract. Norway has defunded a good part of the academic system, so opportunities are limited. I will try to apply for my own funding, but pending potential failure, if someone has a job opportunity that might suit me I would be happy to have a chat!

You've heard of the many analysts projects, right? Scholars give the same dataset/question to a bunch of researchers & they still get different answers. Why is that? Data cleaning! This is consistent with Gelman's "garden of forking paths." Small coding decisions often drive results.

🚨 Stat tips 🚨 Are you aware of the regression to the mean #RTM effect? This artefact is often overlooked in #ecology & especially in biodiversity resurveys πŸŒ³πŸ„πŸ¦”πŸ¦…πŸ¦ŽπŸ¦‹πŸπŸž It basically shows up each time you investigate changes between 2 time events: t2 vs t1 Let me unfold it for you 🧡

New study finds where birds are declining most. High trend resolution data reveals complexity of bird population changes. β€œThis is the first time we’ve had fine-scale information on population changes across such broad spatial extents and across entire ranges of species,” said Dr. Amanda Rodewald.

πŸ“£Get ready for the next Cutting vEdge Tools webinar in our series on ecological databases! On May 9 at 14 CEST, Jens Kattge will talk about the widely known TRY plant trait database. Join for free at us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi... only 100 places!

I’ve been referring people (esp social science/psych PhD students) to this blog post for years. The headline and opening paragraph are all you really need.

🚨Postdoc opportunity @econovoau.bsky.social 🌍 Help forecast how rising ecological novelty reshapes #biodiversity & #vegetation 🌿 Work at the interface of species distribution models & dynamic global vegetation models πŸŒπŸƒβ™¨οΈ- based in Aarhus, Denmark shorturl.at/t45JT #ecology #ecologyjob #macroecology

Do you have a project that exemplifies open science in ecology and evolution? If so nominate the project for a SORTEE Commendation Award πŸ† More details about the SORTEE Commendation Award:

We are live! Introducing the "Journal of Robustness Reports" – a Diamond Open-Access journal dedicated to publishing short reanalyses of empirical findings. Check out our website and blog post about the journal: 🌐 scipost.org/JRobustRep πŸ“„ www.bayesianspectacles.org/introducing-...

Hey #Rstats friendsπŸ‘‹, I am looking for some real life examples of using #targets πŸ“¦ for a large-scale #ecology project. There are a couple of ways of doing things, so I am genuinely interested how people have been using this amazing toolβš’οΈ Please boost♻️

Dotplots With good defaulta it beats the obvious alternatives, scales better than people think (like 10000+ data points) and isn't as sensitive to binwidth or bandwidth estimators Density? Nope dotplot Histogram? Nope dotplot Violin? Nope dotplot

Interesting. Several cancer and health papers there, but also #statistics #ML #software like Breiman's 2001 paper on Random forests, scikit-learn or lme4 #rstats

The #ESOTC2024 report is out! Explore the contrasts across Europe, from the dry and often record-warm conditions in the east to warm but wet conditions in the west. #ESOTC2024 is a joint effort between #CopernicusClimate and @wmo-global.bsky.social, together with over 100 scientists. bit.ly/3G9MdEX

"the quality of input data is more important when improving forecasts than the complexity of the ML architecture" @fdg10371.bsky.social Although it may seem obvious, it deserves reiteration, and it applies to other fields, not only global fires www.nature.com/articles/s41... πŸ§ͺ🌎πŸ”₯🌲πŸ”₯🌿 wildfire

New version of R is out! Our Data Scientist, Russ Hyde, has put together a quick review of the key features and changes in R 4.5 β€” from new language features to graphics updates and more. πŸ“ Read the full blog post here: www.jumpingrivers.com/blog/whats-n... #rstats #Rprogramming #opensource

Are you highlighting #OpenScience activities in your CV, or know someone who does? I am looking for examples to include (of course in anonymized form) as examples in a book chapter. For example, I once came across a CV with small open science badges and would love to include this!

We have read a lot of publications on undergraduate #datascience education research and share our findings in our newly accepted paper: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... Here are few key points we found πŸ‘‡
