I'd never seen this picture of my grandparents before today, and I'm so glad that I now have it. They look so young, full of promise. It is certainly going to be cherished. You are truly both missed 💚

According to Shropshire Folklore, those who visited the Wrekin on Midsummer morning were believed to receive their greatest wish or be bestowed with good fortune for the year ahead. #Folklore #Shropshire #Midsummer

My Short story 'John Barleycorn' was obviously influenced by the folk song, but in particular the Fred Jordan version. Fred was a Shropshire lad and his voice is incredibly nostalgic for me. His rendition is wonderful 🌾 youtu.be/siozz6xeSbQ?... #Folkmusic #Shropshire #Folkhorror

The later Saxon tympanum above the west doorway at Stottesdon is the only visible remnant of the pre-Conquest church. It depicts a hunting scene (though what animals are being hunted is debated) one theory suggests the bearded face is the face of God, which is a very poignant possibility. #History

In the 19th Century, Coalbrookdale was often described as ‘Hell On Earth’ due to the impact of Industrialisation. Perhaps it was this environment that contributed to tragedy below. All I know is that William Maybury deserves to be remembered. nearlyknowledgeablehistory.blogspot.com/2022/03/a-co...

📢 New Post 📢 In my latest article, I have built upon previous research. It discusses the Coalport ferry disaster of 1799, and the many lives lost to the river. This one is personal to me, as it also includes my own families loss. nearlyknowledgeablehistory.blogspot.com/2022/03/loss... #History

These are ghost-ridden lands, the space between rest and remembrance. Here, your grandfather's grandfather still wanders the well-trodden path, whistling as he walks on that familiar journey, following the river home. #Folklore #Shropshire #History

This will be my first work of fiction to be published, which is rather surreal! It's not long now until 'The Cleansing Power of Fire' is available 🌾🌾🌾

✨️NEW POST✨️ My latest blog post discusses the complex story of Emma Davies, who was at the centre of 'The Shropshire Hoax' in 1883. Though not a traditional ghost story, I believe her story is important. nearlyknowledgeablehistory.blogspot.com/2025/05/the-... #Shropshire #History #Folklore #ghosts

Aston Eyre church was founded in 1132. It served as a chapel-of-ease to St Gregory's, Morville. One of the most wonderful things about the building is its late 12th century tympanum showing the entry into Jerusalem. #Shropshire #History #Medieval #Churches

Mitchell's Fold Stone circle is a special place, and subject of a great body of folklore. One story suggests it was the site where King Arthur drew the sword Excalibur from the stone and became king. 🫅🗡 #Folklore #Shropshire #KingArthur

I'm so proud that my short story 'John Barleycorn' is featured in this blazing anthology of Folk Horror by @infestedpublishing.bsky.social full credit to them for having such vision! The solstice can't come quick enough! 🌻 #Folkhorror

The Wrekin is integral to Shropshire, and it is not without ghosts. The many spirits that haunt the hill include a broad gentleman who greets you as a friend, numerous playful children, black dogs, and a strange albino fox with glowing eyes that screams before disappearing. #Folklore #Shropshire

The 'Wenlock Figurine' is as wonderful as it is enigmatic. Discovered at Wenlock Priory in the early 20th century, its origin is uncertain, but one suggestion is that it is Roman. Perhaps it is evidence of an early water-based cult in the area. It's kept in the local museum. #History #Paganism

⚠️ New Post ⚠️ I've have completely rewritten my article about The Devil's time in Shropshire to reflect my research. You can read all about Owd Scratch and why Shropshire really is his county by following the link below nearlyknowledgeablehistory.blogspot.com/2021/05/the-... #Folklore #Shropshire
