My feature on how musicians deal with the American medical system is here, with artists detailing their struggles to get decent care for cancer, gender-affirming care, chronic illnesses, substance abuse, and catastrophic injuries. This one is important to me, so please take a few mins to read it!

Extend the Borealis to Minneapolis

Are we just going to ignore the damages caused by climate action while Republicans are in power because the GOP and their voters are in favor of global warming?

A reminder that DoorDash donated $1 million to a PAC supporting Cuomo. If you want any chance of regulating these companies you must rank Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander, the only candidates who will take them on. Don't rank Cuomo. www.politico.com/news/2025/05...

Helicopters. Armed troops wearing masks. All for a freaking military-grade raid at a flea market that appears to have resulted in two measly arrests. DHS and ICE are out of control. ktla.com/news/local-n...

Air Campaigns don’t Win Wars on their Own: Why Israel will largely Fail in Iran

I think if you’re a lawmaker calling for U.S. military action against Iran, you should be required to post a verified video of yourself pointing it out on an unlabeled map and offering at least an undergraduate level summary of the past five years of Iranian foreign policy.

It’s important to remember that the media/politics people who constantly tell you oligarchy isn’t the problem are all paid by oligarchs. In other words: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

MEDIA RELEASE: Israel’s ongoing attacks on starving Gazans “As Jews, we cannot watch Palestinians starved, concentrated into zones to be shot with impunity, and not remember our own history. The Australian government must urgently act.”

On X, ads are based on political criteria – a prohibited practice

We are the shit hole countries. “Four Global North countries – the United States, Canada, Norway, and Australia – are responsible for nearly 70% of projected new oil and gas expansion from 2025 to 2035.”

Paris is transforming its landscape and climate by planting a large number of trees (native species) in the city to lower temperatures and improve rainwater runoff to reduce flooding and improve air quality in the city. This is the way intelligent humans change the cities they live in.

Great chart from the @iea.org: EVs and excellent rail transportation are bringing about the peak and decline of oil product consumption in China. If anything, I think this is too conservative on the electrification of heavy duty vehicles (diesel) where there's a lot of headroom.

Spanish government report on the causes of the unprecedented blackout of the Iberian peninsula points to failure of thermal power plants to respond as required, and a possible planning failure by the grid operator, as the causes. elpais.com/economia/202...

"While scientists have long predicted that as the world warms there will be more extremes, the increase has been much higher than what was expected, especially by computer model simulations" apnews.com/article/extr...

The resistance against ICE is having an effect. Dozens of armed agents deployed along with a helicopter, resulting in ... two kidnappings.

By the way, huge shout out to Biden and the Democrats in Congress for massively increasing the budget for ICE and CBP detention operations. Those additional billions are definitely having an effect in our cities.

If someone throws a can of soup at a riot cop who's attacking them we have three months of discourse about non-violence meanwhile the Right has been carrying out assassinations for my entire life and there's never any of that shit directed towards them Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

My new investigation for @unearthednews.bsky.social — we found truly shocking scenes of UK labels washed ashore, and vast illegal fast fashion dumps mushrooming in a beautiful conservation area in Ghana 👇

Hell of a chart, this, from @financialtimes.com. Spot the JCPOA. on.ft.com/4kSuQYO

🚨 BREAKING UPDATE Labour has FINALLY accepted defeat in our legal challenge of anti-protest powers We won this case in court twice - under both Conservative and Labour leadership Gov must now commit to reviewing ALL arrests made under these unlawful powers www.lbc.co.uk/news/exclusi...

This is still happening. The sheer viciousness to dangle food in front of people you have deliberately starved and then pick them off one by one boggles the mind.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

When urbanists take pictures of a Paris street (like Rue de Rivoli) showing all the people on bikes taking advantage of protected infrastructure, it’s not just because we “like bikes.” It’s because we’re picturing the gridlock if they were driving cars. And the public cost, pollution, noise…

A comparison to show something important: - Post blackout, headlines blamed renewables (directly, suggested or framed as debate) - Post Spanish gov't report showing 9 coal/gas/nuclear plants failed to provide voltage control: framing is about management, planning rather than the generation type

New poll result: “Do you think the US military should get involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran?” Yes — 16% No — 60%

Ah yes, the much discussed and analyzed realignment on war and foreign policy we’ve been hearing so much about. Count the GOP co-sponsors.

AI is not useful.

“Bloomberg's US Economic Surprise index has turned the most negative so far this year, with a growing number of economic indicators coming in weaker than analysts initially expected.” 🇺🇸 @lisaabramowicz1

@financialtimes.com: UK govt hires investigators, probes Mozambique Liquefied Natural Gas massacre allegations. Human rights lawyer and Prime Minister Keir Starmer must see: Using UK taxpayer finance to support this project would make the UK a party to a catastrophe. www.ft.com/content/28de...

Was consumed all day at work by the fact that trump tweeted "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" at Iran, which from any normal president would be hugely consequential and it wasn't even a story because the media has just sort of deformed itself into nihilistic acceptance of the fact that he's insane

🚨NEW from me: legal scholars, economists, businesses and NGOs are piling pressure on the European Commission to not dump key environmental and supply chain regulations in the face of Trump pressure. With comment from the excellent Thom Wetzer.

On the one hand I might find a new career cleaning up from this nonsense. On the other I'll be past retirement age by the time people with money to pay me for it realize that's necessary.

The Israeli government has shown that it is not prepared to stop until every Palestinian in #Gaza is dead, disabled or displaced. Every day in which it is still armed and supported by Western states, our own included, is a stain on international law.

Thanks to @sunnibean.bsky.social & @dublininquirer.com for writing about D7 Play Streets. This is something that people have been working on in Dublin for a very, very long time. www.dublininquirer.com/two-dads-are...

Wow! Since 2005, Paris has slashed air pollution by 55% - a staggering win for public health and climate. How? Bold green urbanism. The city curbed car traffic, expanded bike lanes and boosted public transport. When people and planet are prioritised, the air gets cleaner and lives get better.

“By injecting a staggering $869bn into fossil fuel financing in 2024 alone, the world’s largest banks fund the climate chaos... Governments must step in & take urgent action to hold financial institutions accountable for their role in the #climatecrisis” - @davidxvx.bsky.social‬

Iran: Weeks away from having nuclear weapons since 1995

the lesson of this isn't that tucker carlson is actually good but that you should ask these people basic factual questions instead of bullshit about politics
