Ah, the #MetGala, when everyone posts pics and assumes that everyone else recognizes the celebrities. Thank you to those of you using alt text for all the real reasons, but also to help those of us with zero pop culture knowledge or ability to recognize famous people.

I think one real danger of the internet in times like these is its escapism is forward leaning. We imagine that if we keep scrolling, something better will happen as time tilts. It’s not really doomscrolling but hopescrolling and so we wait, too long; & doing things in local streets feels futile.

It's been a minute, but here I am writing about Moominmamma's handbag for @theconversation.com: theconversation.com/with-moominm...

I wish more people understood how the high cost of housing in Charlottesville and Albemarle negatively impacts their healthcare providers ability to recruit and retain doctors, nurses, allied health, and other staff. In other words, your healthcare is worse because of high housing costs.

GALAGOG the state of being simultaneously entranced and unsettled by the vastness of the cosmos, which makes your deepest concerns feel laughably quaint, yet vanishingly rare. From galaxy, a gravitationally bound system of millions of stars + agog, awestruck. Pronounced “gal-uh-gawg.” ~Maria Popova

couldn’t remember what those violet candies (c. howard’s) are called, including briefly forgetting the word violet, ended up calling them “gay altoids,” happy to report everyone instantly knew what I meant

More fun times at work! Someone in a position of authority decided Friday mid-day would be a great time to have the power turned off in a whole building, without notifying anyone who actually works in the building.

May you find happiness. Not satisfaction. Not revenge, or simply pleasure. Instead, may you soon rest your head upon a sweet reclining shoulder, soothed of simmering melancholy.

So OpenAI is actively marketing ChatGPT to students during college finals season in the U.S. We've talked many (many) times before about the kinds of harm that can come from giving over too much epistemic and heuristic authority over to these systems, but additionally, there's been at least three…

Sounds like my job won't be transitioning to full-time this summer like I was hoping. Academics, need an indexer for your upcoming publication? Get in touch! I've indexed many books in history, sociology, the humanities, and the messy interconnected spaces between. Also genealogies.

Unbelievable that I don't have any cookbooks with a normal cheesecake recipe. Clearly I need more cookbooks!

exactly—there is a long history of using automation not simply to automate, or to make things more efficient, but to lower wages, reconfigure workforces, and destroy worker power. We are in such a moment.

Ok, universe. I'm ready for a loyal, supportive, extroverted female friend. And maybe also a realtor, idk.

The redbud in my yard is beautiful. It's not really my yard of course. I'm not getting anywhere and it's so tiring being a failure all alone.

Just imagining being rich enough to own a modest house in a charming, green and walkable portion of #Cville. Lol not in this lifetime! 😭

“I’ve been meaning to get back in touch over the years,” Emerson continued. “But that message was still the last thing you sent, so I still have to address it somehow – and it’s older than my child at this point.”

About to start indexing a book on AI and the humanities. Looking forward to getting into it!

A year ago there was a devastating fire at my community. Some of the people I lived with made this 33-minute video afterward, about what it was like and the changes that came out of it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYTa...

Trying to do all the things and I don't get anything accomplished.

I think the peas I planted nearly 3 weeks ago are finally coming up! Indoors I'm starting borage, marigolds, nasturtiums, pansies, and hopefully some of the tomatoes will make it despite having been knocked over and spilled on the porch.

What’s something that’s a banal observation in your field, but which really blows students’ minds the 1st time they encounter it? I’ll go 1st—when we talk about how technological history gets narrated & I say "no human being has ever lived in a historical period—they’ve only lived in the present"

Stand in the place to get milk Now face north Think about the eggs, Wonder why you haven't before Now stand in the place to get pork Now face west Think about the things not on your list Wonder why you're at this store

I swear I'm not a hippie but fuck, American Beauty, what an evergreen album. So great for those times when your life is turning a corner.

THIS IS HOW YOU STAND UP: How about if all places of worship, schools and other public spaces put up signs by their entrances with this simple statement of the law? (This one’s from a Minnesota church). Suggesting it to my temple today. Will report back.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Judge it by its index. (From my Inventing the Renaissance)

Sometimes I post the same thing to Bluesky and Mastodon simultaneously. Invariably I get more responses and more reposts on Mastodon. An hour ago I posted about being available for indexing work. Bluesky: 1 like, 1 repost. Mastodon: 3 likes, 14 boosts. (Thank you friends!)

Stop doomscrolling for one minute and do clickens for mental health. clickens.chicken.pics

HALF OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Holy fuck, you guys.

I'm concerned about Mahmoud Khalil for his own sake and for the sake of all permanent residents... but also because green card holders may be the last firewall before they start detaining and disappearing citizens.

A collection of glass eyes, c.1880. These were likely meant to be carried by an ocularist – someone who specialized in making and fitting prosthetic eyes – to assist them in making the best possible match to the patient’s remaining eye. #histmed #skystorian

On the other hand, according to Google AI, hippos are able to handle complex procedures and might be your people if you really want to do "childbirth by wild animal".
