Obligatory: da pope

Chicago Fire Chicago PD Chicago Justice Chicago Med...

Tuned in for Filipino pope, got American pope instead. Ew. A true loss for the church. I told my family I’d go back to mass if a Filipino was pope.

Also I went in not knowing it was a twin movie. Wow that really threw me when I saw double Michael B Jordan. That’s FOUR MBJ arms.

I left Sinners like “ok, music is a universal language.”

I made the viral cinnamon roll focaccia and it’s worth it

I see that I’m doing a lot of blessing/curse rhetoric and I’m gonna chalk it up to doing dialectical thinking in the midst of hell

Having both my finals on the first day of finals is a blessing and a curse. I am currently enduring the curse—grading all these essay portfolios in the 72 hours that my uni requires for me to turn around final grades.

really jazzed by my students' final reflections in my "music in the atomic age" class. doing cultural history with close musical/sonic analysis is really cool and fun. and the students are really bright. yay.

Some thoughts on the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Viet Nam, and how we can draw a straight line from that war to El Salvador and Bukele’s prison, and to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine, and what role that otherness plays. www.democracy-now.org/2025/4/30/vi...

Mohsen was just released by the federal judge in VT!!

my students think I'm 25. This is a blessing and a curse, but on this my last day of teaching until 2026 (thank the sabbatical gods) I'm leaning into it.

NEW: a coalition of states and startups are suing the nuclear regulatory commission, saying that there are too many regulations standing in the way of nuclear progress. some nuclear experts say removing regulations is the exact wrong move at a fragile moment of public nuclear acceptance:

Also it’s my birthday (week) I’m too blessed to be stressed I’m rocking Simone Rocha to LDOC

What I wish I could reply: No. I’ve told you I’m booked through the end of finals. Stop asking me to do emotional labor beyond my official obligations. You are not entitled to my time. If it’s not on my CV it’s not my priority or problem.

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is running a massive data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility neighbors historically Black neighborhoods and is powered by 35 pollution-spewing methane gas turbines the company is using without legal permits.

not me in a new-to-me (very much used) Herman Miller office chair

I am planning to see Sinners as soon as I can find an IMAX nearby that’s playing it. In the meantime, here’s a review by Leroy Moore (of Krip Hop Institute) that appears to be spoiler free. kriphopinstitute.com/disability-a...

It’s only downhill from here: lecturing today about Green Day’s American Idiot and asked my classroom where they were on 9/11 and duh they weren’t born yet

Oh hell yes. A colleague recommended a student have a 1:1 with me to talk LACANNNNNNNNN.

Anyone wanna panel up for Society for American Music 2026???

#AAR #Advocacy | We learned this morning (April 3) that DOGE has begun terminating previously awarded NEH grants. If you have been or might be affected, we've put together resources from the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) to help: aarweb.org/news/take-ac...

Anyone else locked out of applying to anything on grants.gov? Was trying to sneak in my NEH fellowship application but I think it’s officially donezo

Who else is going to be in San Juan November 20-22???? 😏

RIP Jonathan Sterne. He was my former brilliant colleague, but more importantly, one of the nicest, coolest, perceptive, imaginative, and kindest friends I've ever had. His other half, Carrie, also a luminescent, kind, and brilliant soul, was with him when he left us last night. I will so miss him.

this morning friends, colleagues, and students recieved an email with the sad news that jonathan sterne passed away last night in his sleep. if you would like to reach out to carrie, you can do so at the heyjonandcarrie email that was previously distributed. (dm me if you dont have this)

Here's a more fulsome post from the Press. So sad. Farewell to Jonathan Sterne dukeupress.wordpress.com/2025/03/21/f...

Like it or not, military spending is a big driver of the US economy. So we're shrinking our military spending by pushing away EU & Canada as we simultaneously impose tariffs & cut other forms of govt spending. US economy is going to crater as a result.

Earlier today, a group of students received word that Jonathan Sterne entered hospice care yesterday following his ongoing battle with cancer. I think there's a few of his colleagues and former students that follow me on here (he's also currently my phd advisor), more info will be coming soon
