Okay this is getting ridiculous. In addition to the ongoing problems with the UK’s Labour Force Survey, the Wealth and Assets Survey (key source for measuring wealth inequality) has now also had its accreditation revoked due to falling response rates. osr.statisticsauthority.gov.uk/news/osr-sus...

It'll be two years, this Monday night. Time, at last, to write about Agnes.

Delighted to host the launch of new #NuffieldFunded research which underpins the Minimum Digital Living Standard - what households now need to be digitally included in today's world.

@iprnickp.bsky.social and @gavin-kelly.bsky.social analyse how the UK welfare state was reshaped by austerity and Covid, showing that despite fundamental changes, most reforms aligned with the UK's liberal model. They also explore future policy options. #UKWelfare academic.oup.com/oxrep/articl...

The dangerous decline of child vaccination in England. Such a worrying trend at several levels.

ICYMI: The UK’s economic inactivity crisis is under the spotlight in the new series of The We Society from @acadsocsciences.bsky.social with our Chief Exec @gavin-kelly.bsky.social. It's the first to be produced in collaboration with the Academy, the Foundation & @leverhulme.ac.uk ow.ly/UBBR50VTVe9

I keep hearing it asserted that a higher minimum wage must be really harming the chances of wage progression. Not true according to this new evidence.

The likelihood of a fiscally painful downgrade of the OBR's productivity assumption is high & rising. If it happens it will likely be phased rather than a one-off step down. But the consequences would still be large and outweigh other policy choices that are dominating the headlines.

ICYMI, in episode 1 of the @acadsocsciences.bsky.social We Society podcast, Will Hutton is joined by @gavin-kelly.bsky.social, CEO @nuffieldfoundation.org, to discuss potential solutions to the UK’s economic inactivity crisis. 🎙️https://podfollow.com/the-we-society/view

Addressing inactivity is one of the big social challenges of our times - and new approaches are needed. Good to talk to Will Hutton about this on the new We Society podcast by @acadsocsciences.bsky.social in partnership with @nuffieldfoundation.org & @leverhulme.ac.uk podfollow.com/the-we-socie...

It’s hardly the main issue but keeping the 2 child limit for longer has the knock-on effect of delaying meaningful debate on the additional anti-poverty measures - incentives for p/t work & 2nd earners, social tariffs, social rents, employment support, access to FSM etc - that we desperately need.

Responding to the crisis of inactivity among the young is one of the challenges of our times. My conversation with Will Hutton.

Philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre has died.

The wider point: careful, longer-term evaluation *really* matters if you want good policy. I was in government when early results on EMAs generated excitement while those on Sure Start underwhelmed. Longer-term studies have now transformed our understanding of policy effectiveness.

If you are interested in public policy do look at the new @theifs.bsky.social report on the impact of Sure Start - a powerful piece of work. Here are the estimated benefits and costs. Really pleased @nuffieldfoundation.org supported this programme of work.

The terms of the proposed Fair Pay Agreement in the care sector - whether there will be real ambition on wages, conditions & progression - has just gone from something of interest to the care sector & a few labour market experts, to being at the centre of British policy & politics.

Given how embedded cake-ism has become this is indeed notable. First stage of resolving a painful trade-off is to recognise it.
