I was invited to catholic mass today by my friends from #Tonga 🇹🇴

🚨Public service announcement🚨 Raw peanuts are better than roasted peanuts. End message.

Great TLDR for how Public Accounts Committees work under the Westminster system. 👌🏼

Turns out there's a market for cheesy romance novels in #Tonga 🇹🇴

#AI '...At the last few parties I’ve been to I’ve offhandedly mentioned that I use ChatGPT, and at each one someone I don’t know has said something like “Ew… you use ChatGPT? Don’t you know how terrible that is for the planet? And it just produces slop.”...' andymasley.substack.com/p/individual...

I beg you please stop calling p-hacking exploratory analysis. Call it data dredging, fishing expedition, cherry picking, significance chasing. Labeling your non-pre-reg'd analyses clearly as exploratory isn't a license to p-hack. Stop bastardizing scientific exploration and stop hiding behind it.

I was talking to someone about the differences between left and right politicians. They work in the parliament and said that they generally found conservative politicians easier to work with than those from the left when it came to operating processes. ...

This is from @catherinebreslin.bsky.social's (great) #AI newsletter. My first thought was 'ahhh... Autonomously getting AI to do 24 percent of my job would be kind of huge." 🤯 Link to newsletter: aixinsights.substack.com/p/may-roundu... Link to paper: arxiv.org/abs/2412.141...

I get approached by a lot of consulting firms that want to add me to a bid or project. I'm totally with this. I work for a number of firms when they need my skill set. But, before approaching me, please take a look at my LinkedIn. That way you'll realize I'm not a civil engineer.

I tested out Gemini #AI on pdf files with budget information today. I asked it to explain how the pdf files relate to one another, which it did correctly. I then asked it to draw out detailed expenditure by government agency in a csv table. It did this correctly too. 👌🏼

Another shot from #Tonga. (I'm helping out as an adviser as they analyse the 2026 budget).

Copilot reappeared on my Surface Pro, so I gave it another whirl for converting images into csv tables. Works like a charm, has been fast and is saving me a good chunk of time. #AI ftw.

#rstats has pipes (|>), but maybe we need other plumbing functionality, like: -A 'tap' (🚰) operator that allows us to turn code blocks on and off; -A u-bend function that automatically removes extreme outliers; and -A drainage function that deletes temporary objects and unloads unused packages 🤔

This workshop is tomorrow, don't miss your last chance to register! Details: bit.ly/3wBeY4S Please share! #AcademicSky #EconSky #Python

I love finding out when I've been misinformed about something. I'm pretty sure I read it was due for an eruption in Bill Bryson's (great) book 'A History of Nearly Everything'(?). #Yellowstone

Pretty big deal for #auspol "Australia's conservative Liberal-National coalition - the nation's main opposition political party - has split after a partnership lasting almost 80 years..."

I'm in this comic. Credit: @mrlovenstein.bsky.social

First shot from #Tonga: 🇹🇴 This is the (temporary) legislative assembly.

I had my alarm set as "Affirmation" by Savage Garden for a short time. I changed it when it became grating (about a week), but am now thinking I'll give "Desiderata" a whirl .

I kind of love this 👌🏼 #AI

I'm currently watching 'Solo Leveling' as my nephew is into it right now. The storyline feels like it's there just to justify the fight scenes. I think my teenage self would have liked it. Particularly if I'd grown up watching other people play video games. 🤔
