As SCOTUS weighs in on limiting nationwide injunctions (the types of rulings that challenge Trump’s mass deportation efforts), no action has been taken to facilitate the return of the wrongly deported man still held in a Salvadorian prison.

After the former chief medical examiner of MD testified in the Derek Chauvin homicide trial, independent reviewers revisited 87 cases of deaths in custody during his tenure. 36 unanimous "this should have been ruled homicide and it wasn't", 5 more where 2/3 would overturn. wjla.com/news/local/g...

Last month, @riccisergienko.bsky.social talked with me about contrasts between the academic study of social movements and the experience of organizing or participating in them. Here's a lightly-edited version of the core of that conversation. dartthrowingchimp.com/2025/05/15/c...

Get in, folks. We’re hating on academics & calling out liberal counterinsurgency. Academics, liberals, the Democratic Party, & their partners in the nonprofit space are a barrier to “progress” (liberation) for poor & working people. This must be accepted as truth as we move forward.

SoCal will literally do anything before giving us safe walking and biking infra.

"The number of employed Black women dropped from 10.325 million in March to 10.219 million in April. Their unemployment rate jumped from 5.1% to 6.1%, the largest month-to-month increase among all racial and gender groups." www.washingtoninformer.com/black-women-...

If I had to listen to Bill Cosby at my NYU commencement, surely folks were able to withstand this

Apparently the world's leading scholars of genocide are all 'antisemites' who, under current policy, should be banned from entry to the US. Do I have that right? www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2025/...

we published three pieces this week that delve into major stakes in next Tuesday's elections. all in Pennsylvania, but they should matter to you many places. this is why i love having Bolts: it's a space where we get to take really seriously why local elections matter to people's lives. brief 🧵:

Will every one of these 87,000 people publish an essay on "Why I'm moving to New York"? Or are no reverse Lena Dunhams allowed?

In Newark to support Ras Baraka at the Federal Courthouse.

And I guess this brings me to the larger point that we are being asked to defend a lot of things that have been failing us for a long time and instead of really working to make things better for everyone we left a wide open lane for rich assholes to destroy institutions, trump/musk to end democracy.

And I’ll fight tooth and nail to defend funding for public broadcasting! But goddamn what are they even doing over at NPR?

It’s pretty wild bc you listen to NPR and it really sucks. Constant nonadvertising advertising for all the big donors, constant bugs about upcoming programming, constant 5 second music interludes, constant platforming of center-right talking points without effective push back.

LA will say they operate with housing first but in practice they don’t.

L.A. Vietnamese man came for annual ICE check-in, then nearly got deported to Libya

Kinda insane to be slow walking into something that probably won’t be a large scale disaster but will be a bunch of little disasters that make some peoples’ lives absolute hell while many of the positive claims evaporate as the games approach.

"Like all previous police commissioners, Jessica Tisch is a hammer. And a hammer is always looking for a nail."

Are any powerful alumnus of Columbia and NYU angry and going to make calls, apply pressure? Or is it just Bill Ackman that’s important to higher ed?

Pretty much every action aimed at “US dominance” has made the US weaker in the world. We could be enjoying massively deployed cheap solar, cheap evs, a healthy relationship. Instead everything will continue to get more expensive as polluters are allowed to keep on polluting.

"Electricity supply from new wind, solar and nuclear capacity was enough to cut coal-power output even as demand surged, whereas previous falls were due to weak growth."

Haven't promoted the book in a while for fairly obvious reasons [all this], but this review is a great introduction. Also, please check out the book if you want to learn more about an institution that has long enshrined the sorts of harm and violence now ubiquitously apparent in US society.

NYU’s statement here is nuts. “Subjected to”? The student’s characterization of what’s happening in Gaza is milder than the UN’s.

It seems like some of our higher ed institutions want this too.

NYU says “maybe genocide is good. Ever think of that?”

No words.

"The testimony the authors collected... should be enough to call for a national inquiry into the sport’s violently destructive nature, though it is highly unlikely that any such inquiry will be launched." @silkyweineck.bsky.social in @mid-theory.bsky.social on our @uncpress.bsky.social book.

NYU is like: “genocide is good actually.”

The "personal one sided political views" that [checks notes] mass murder is probably bad

This is a big deal.

A principled student said in a grad speech that the “only appropriate thing to say in this moment” is to acknowledge the “atrocities” currently being committed in Palestine. In response, NYU is withholding their diploma + apologizing to the community for the trauma the audience was “subjected to.”

Can you imagine if they detain Bruce Springsteen when he tries to re-enter the U.S.

At some point, Democrats in Congress will have to accept the Trump regime does not accept they’re a legitimate participant in government—and start acting accordingly.

so the members of congress just stopped going to el salvador and not a single person who was illegally sent there has been returned and that’s just how it is now?

Pretty incredible that Jeff Bezos' Amazon announced a "$5 billion-plus" partnership w/ a Saudi AI co launched by Mohammed Bin Salman and sent CEO Andy Jassy to meet with him less than 7 years after MBS murdered Jamal Khashoggi, a columnist for Bezos' Washington Post. techcrunch.com/2025/05/13/a...

A New York corrections officer admitted in court that he cleaned up blood from the fatal beating of an inmate in an attempt to conceal evidence.

This is absolutely horrific.

The state of Georgia is keeping a deceased Black woman’s corpse hooked up to machines against her family’s wishes because she was 9 weeks pregnant and they cannot let them shut off the machines b/c it violates their anti-abortion laws “ITS TORTURE,” says her family www.11alive.com/article/news...

The significance of this, of course, is that the administration claims it is deporting people to fight anti-Semitism but they are letting this bigoted turd in.

"Women detained in Philadelphia say they banged on their cell doors for hours pleading for medical attention, but nobody responded." Please read @laurengill.bsky.social on the human rights crisis in Philly, & the ballot measure that locals hope will bring more visibility to the situation next week:
