This is a big and important statement.

Hey, if you're going to write a paper on the subject of academic writing with AI and you reference a book by me that I NEVER WROTE AND DOESN'T EXIST AT ALL, maybe don't submit it to the journal I edit and where I am literally its first reader (and now perhaps its *only* reader)

fair to say Kemi Badenoch’s last interview on BBC wasn’t a storming success

Lovely to arrive at Cheltenham lido this morning (on foot) and discover that they’ve covered their car park in solar panels since I was last here. This should be standard for car parks everywhere. Same goes for any large roof.

If it’s 6 June, it must be 193 years to the day since Jeremy Bentham died, stipulating in his will that his body should be preserved at University College London so he could be wheeled in to attend every council meeting. Well... except most of the stories about his remains aren’t true 🧵

King Edwin’s daughter, Eanflæd, became the first Northumbrian to be baptised #OTD in 626. She later wed King Oswiu, championed the Roman dating of Easter and became abbess of Streanæshalch (Whitby) with her daughter Ælfflæd. 📸Chris Kirk #medievalsky

Child casualties almost halved, child deaths down by 3/4… All the other stats don’t really matter

Just don't get your hopes up kids, remember we're in the cursed timeline, knowing our luck they'll probably be best friends by the morning and celebrating by deporting everyone without a U and M in their surname.

Reform’s chairman mistaking a procurement framework for government waste tells you everything you need to know about how their councils will be run: loud, wrong, and completely out of their depth.

“Desire paths” are unofficial trails, usually bypassing a planned path, that reveal the most convenient route to get somewhere. The people (AKA meanderthals) that tramp along these routes often wear away grass, creating the secondary path Walk this way for more on desire paths (a thread / tread)...

So, when everyone including Bank of England, underestimated UK inflation and the impact of taxes - we thought, ”silly analysts, they shouldn’t have made that mistake”… … turns out rather differently

Schrödinger: It's an elegant thought experiment because until you open the box there is no way of knowing-- Box: Meow. Schrödinger: Fuck.

If you went to a city and had stuff to do you essentially had to buy an A-Z in a petrol station... or gather detailed instructions over the phone the night before. The rest of the time you used a road map and if you got lost asked locals. For my own part - I used to navigate using the sun.

There's probably a whole #ttrpg scenario to be created out of this...

Some more 'background' to this Guardian article. 1. The 5251 sites 'at risk' is simply a count of all protected sites in the UK (of which Labour are doing things to actively protect and made more). 2. They pick 10 they say are particularly at risk - but don't say how or why. 1/5

Okay: who’s writing a space opera? Room for a massive dreadnought called Harvey Milk?

Well, there's a strange coincidence. Listening to Slow Motion on the way in to Waterloo. Thinking I should pack up, nearly there. Glance up, see a massive piece of graffiti: "MAN" Have never noticed it before...

UK corporation tax is a mess. It makes us uncompetitive, not just vs Singapore, Ireland and other countries that tax companies less than us, but vs countries like Sweden and Denmark, who have higher tax but a better system.

It might be some time before the detail of the UK EU SPS deal is negotiated let alone implemented, but for the UK government an opportunity to finally abandon the embarrassing failure of successive governments to implement border checks to the EU.

🚨🚨 Depressing but very insightful thread by Jakub on the election of President Nawrocki and the (negative) implications of this election for #Poland's #ruleoflaw repair process. Tldr; key concern is the use of the presidential veto to block Tusk government's centrist and (more progressive) agenda.

Usually, if people leave us coins as donations we're delighted. But... ...we've got a bit of an issue. And this one is on a giant scale.

Again, I cannot express how little I expected someone would usurp my position as "guy who takes ketamine in the company of a president".

So, to paraphrase the quote in the Bookseller, ‘No-one’s getting paid, unless some other schmucks fund the new venture’. That’s pretty much robbing Peter and Petra to pay Paul and Paula. Not a good basis for either business.

I relate to a lot of Ursula Le Guin's writing schedule, but it's the "very stupid after 8pm" bit that seems to hit harder and deeper as the years go on.
