Videogames produce mindsets. Blue Prince produces obsession—and, crucially, validation. I wrote about Blue Prince, novel writing, and how even a simulation of obsession can tax the creative drive.

Just learned about the existence of Joe Spreadsheet, the beefcake 80s spreadsheet software mascot a la Mavis Beacon

There's an article I never got a chance to write at Polygon about camera controls. I'm going to write it now that I have nothing but free time, but I need your help! If you could take a minute to answer these 11 questions (or share the link), that would be amazing. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

New post up for Monday about a daily writing practice I developed last month. It's modeled on a newbie running program: I added sentences to my daily goal each week until I was doing about a paragraph each day. New post - "Couch to Paragraph Writing Program" walshbr.com/blog/couch-t...

Up and at em

Called my mom for Mother's Day only to have her tell me about the typos in my manuscript, which is, as the person who brought me into this world, entirely her right.

Calling my mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother-in-law today

Happy Mother’s Day

I love this description, both in terms of fictively portraying games, but also in terms of writing about games critically. All game writing is travelogue.

The most honest survey option

Making a deliberate effort to play more games in my backlog rather than staying on top of the newest releases, which feels more akin to how I choose what to read. Industry woes notwithstanding, I wonder whether it's a sign of a maturing medium that we probably don't need the "latest and greatest."

I wanted to share some of the stories I deeply enjoyed editing at Polygon, particularly narrative features and culture crit around games, the internet, power structures, and community; I'm grateful Polygon gave me the space to do it. I loved working with writers so much

Quick five miles to get out the workweek jitters

The Bear x Conclave crossover episode is gonna be wild

me, a normal guy with relatable opinions: "isn't *every* game second person, when you get down to it...?" everyone else: *raucous boos*

Damn, is it too late to apply for Pope

Had a lovely and very thoughtful chat with @knguyen.bsky.social about his new book and video games!

Got personal with this one.

Idk about you all, but my 2025 is just a waiting game to see when Hades II 1.0 completely derails my entire life plan

I’m finally getting into that hit RPG everyone is talking about: Final Fantasy XII

We condemn Vox Media’s May Day decision to lay off a majority of @polygon.com staff w/o warning as part of the sale to known media-brand-destroyer Valnet. We stand in solidarity with the staff who were laid off, and with @voxmediaunion.bsky.social in their ongoing contract negotiations.

Despelote is an incredible game, and @nicanor.bsky.social explains why: noescapevg.com/despelote-re...

Getting laid off is really starting to sink in and bum me out today — Friday was my first day of being unemployed, but I had previously taken that day off, lol — so to make myself feel better, I and my wife donated to the layoff fund. It's at 84%... help out if you can!

I was planning on putting this up when I hit 1000 posts on Polygon, but here's a handful of the 800 or so articles I'm most proud of writing during my time there in no particular order.

I am really proud of the work I did over my 3+ years at Polygon and over a decade at Vox Media, and grateful for the people I got to do it with. I'm going to share some of my very favorites in this thread.

I am immensely proud of all my work at Polygon, but these are some of my favorites, starting with my video on logistics games and the covid supply chain crisis boy i sure hope that doesn't happen again youtu.be/gXKzO2XZKxQ?...

With the little runway I now have, I will attempt to get a new, independent podcast into the air. Original reporting. Every week. Subscribe to the newsletter if you want to watch it being built.

Broad Street Run complete! Very proud of my time. Now—food.
