"I meet new people every day, and I try my best to make their day a good day. No matter [if] they come in the restaurant sad or angry, I would want that when they left the restaurant they’re happy." @gregsargent.bsky.social's moving interview with Carol Hui. newrepublic.com/article/1959...

I've got bookmark folders for various outrages of the Trump administration—budget cuts, the war on science & medical research, immigration human rights violations. This transcript is bookmarked in the latter as firsthand testimony to the personal, human cost of the Trump administration's cruelty.

This is an incredible interview by @gregsargent.bsky.social for @newrepublic.com. It is completely wrenching and captures everything that’s wrong with ICE. Totally sick that it has come to this but maybe good reporting like Greg's can change some minds. newrepublic.com/article/1959...

Thank you, @lkatfield.bsky.social, I hope so!

This interview should be read aloud in Congress and the Senate. @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social @ericswalwell.bsky.social @reptedlieu.bsky.social @aoc.bsky.social @jayapal.house.gov @repwesleybellmo.bsky.social @raskin.house.gov @repjasmine.bsky.social @schumer.senate.gov @chrismurphyct.bsky.social

The lack of real fight from some Christian denominations is interesting because 2008-2012, these sorts of things would get some evangelical churches speaking out.

A thought: Perhaps more people should use podcasts to broadcast the voices and stories of victims of Trump's policies. It might be a good use of journalistic resources in the Trump era. Maybe even better than trying to be a "Joe Rogan of the left."

"I meet new people every day, and I try my best to make their day a good day."

Greg Sargent interviews a woman who’s lived in Kennett, Mo., for 20 years but has been jailed and targeted for deportation. Residents in the Trump-supporting area have offered their support, but apparently too late. “We don’t ask for food stamps,” she said. “We work. … We are not criminals.”

so one of the things that the Trumpist adherence to a Huntingtonian "Clash of Civilizations" model does is to claim that that there is no way for an immigrant to really become part of "the West" because "the West" is defined BOTH racially and religiously

Thoughts! 🧵 I don't think it's worth trying to peel off voters who are mad about things like this (some will go on their own, the rest will bring themselves back to Trump no matter what) but I DO think some are primed to be demoralized and ripe for being turned against authoritarianism/authority.

A defining feature of conservatism, in addition to the Wilhoit Maxim, is "my X is the only good X." My abortion is the moral one. The gay man that I know is okay, not like the rest of them. The undocumented waitress at my diner is a community staple, unlike all those other criminals.

This interview is heartbreaking and infuriating. Her story captures so much of what can make small towns beautiful and also what makes this moment in our politics so dangerous and evil. “Please protect me,” she says. I dare anyone to say “Carol” doesn’t deserve to stay here. Who do we want to be?

Yes. In our interview, this immigrant facing deportation quite literally rhapsodizes about small town America and talks about how grateful she has been for the opportunity to contribute to its solidarity/communitarian spirit! I wonder what the postliberals would have to say in response to this

This is heartbreaking. Listen to Ming Li "Carol" Hui, from ICE detention, break down in tears as she contemplates having to leave her family behind. She has no criminal record and had permission from ICE to stay despite a removal order for over a decade — yet Trump's revoking it.

Brilliant, heart-rending interview. Do yourself a favor and listen to this.

Trump's deporting the good immigrants

@mattyglesias.bsky.social sure seems like there's an opening here for Dems to rehabilitate pluralism in the way you've suggested. Listen to this woman talk:

Transcript of our interview with Ming Li "Carol" Hui, who spoke to us on our podcast from jail:

Hey postliberal religious conservatives: This woman jailed and getting deported after living in a Missouri town for 20 years converted to Catholicism, delivers a powerful communitarian message, and speaks with deep gratitude toward the Trump voters backing her cause. newrepublic.com/article/1959...

We encourage everyone to listen to this jailhouse interview with the Missouri mom recently taken into ICE custody

Crucial from @mjtoma.bsky.social: Republicans *want* fiscal crises because it enables cutting the safety net and turns voters against public investment. It's amazing that the role of GOP presidents in exploding deficits still isn't widely understood. Good column: newrepublic.com/article/1959...

This was a very powerful and emotional appeal from this immigrant woman facing deportation:

Really powerful interview

Maybe folks should only vote for candidates whose laws they wouldn’t mind seeing applied to themselves and their neighbors.

The EU should offer unconditional asylum to anyone in the USA who currently have asylum or are applying. Imagine the fate of a Venezuelan (to give but one example) who fled their country being met by Maduro's police as they land. This is a humanitarian catastrophe and Europe should step up.

From Ming Li Hui, currently in a Missouri jail: "My daughter, she’s seven years old. And she said, 'Mom, please come home, please. I miss you...nobody tells me bedtime story no more. Mom, give me a hug and kiss. Mom, I miss you. I need you.' I just want my kids to not be scared."

One striking thing this immigrant facing deportation does here is speak powerfully about the support she's been getting from Trump voters. You can listen to her voice from jail. She gets extremely emotional. The depravity of Trump's deportations laid bare in a new way.

We need to talk. As a country- have a real conversation abt immigration. They are snatching up law abiding moms that have immigration issues. Don’t think this is lost on M@gas. They just don’t have the brain cells to understand it. It’s a good listen. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

This is beyond appalling…

We recorded this immigrant facing deportation on our podcast straight from jail. It got really intense. She broke down in tears and spoke powerfully of her gratitude toward Trump voters who support her. This captures the cruelty of Trump's deportations in a way you haven't heard before. Listen:

Ming Li Hui, who has lived in a Missouri town for 20 years, is getting deported. This has shocked and angered the locals, many of whom back Trump. She spoke to us on our podcast straight from jail. She broke down in tears and made a wrenching appeal. Listen: newrepublic.com/article/1959...

Congrats @aselrod.bsky.social!

Courts are essential to fighting the Trump/Project 2025 agenda. #resist

Trump's attempts to rule by decree - using absurdly broad interpretations of statutes enacted by Congress to render Congress irrelevant - is at odds with the Constitution's Separation of Powers and akin to... authoritarian dictatorships. But the GOP-controlled SCOTUS and Congress are ok with it.

Courts generally decide cases based on evidence. Anyone can go on FOX news and lie with impunity, but courts largely look at the actual facts and proof. So when Trump people lie about taking some action based on an imaginary emergency, a lot of judges call b.s., even many Trump judges

The great divide between the Federalist Society types who wanted a permanent conservative veto via the judiciary and the MAGA dictatorship types who want Trump to have absolute power is one of the crucial fault lines of US politics right now.

This is striking. We now have two Trump-appointed judges directly knocking down Trump's power to simply create emergencies by decree and then assuming extraordinarily sweeping powers on that basis. This is the thing to watch. It's key to their dictatorial project. newrepublic.com/article/1959...

"What’s really at issue here is whether Trump can simply pull 'emergencies' out of his rear to assume dictatorial powers for himself. The court is saying, 'No, you can’t.' Trump’s rant basically says: 'Yes, I can.'"
