From the vault: hear me and @superlinguo.bsky.social talk about why the word for "seal" sounds like "fuck" in so many European languages, shifts in meaning from "sucks" to "rawdogging" and more sweary commentary from the very first Lingthusiasm bonus episode, now updated and free-with-email!

Someone asked us on @lingthusiasm.bsky.social a few years ago whether/how synesthesia was a thing in signed languages and at the time there wasn't research about it that anyone on old twitter knew about but now there is this!

Thrilled to announce that my book MORE THAN WORDS (Avery/Penguin Random House) is out! It explains why language production has huge positive effects on talkers: attention, emotion regulation, exec function & more. Accessible science for general audiences! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/724046...

And an excerpt from Endangered Languages that echoes with the experiences of so many speakers of minoritized and Indigenous languages #linguistics

I've just learnt that "try harder", which is common in video games, has become a French word. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you "traillarder"(verb) and "traillardeur" (noun). L'académie Française will definetely sulk, but I love it. #linguistics

How are we feeling about the consensus-seeking "we"? 🐦🐦

In early writings on phonetics, voiceless consonants (like k) are called sharps and voiced consonants (like b) are called flats. This works on miltiple levels but especially because the most common form of tonogenesis is voiced consonants becoming low tones.

linguistics.

Sending out a bat signal for linguists: I’m trying to get my high school Linguistics and Media Studies class approved as an ENG101 course for early college / dual enrollment. The English dept at this community college keeps sending up roadblocks because there’s “too much linguistics,” (1/3) 🐦🐦

Today's my 13th blogiversary! I started allthingslinguistic.com on this day in 2012 In previous years sometimes I've done a big retrospective but at the moment the blog is running a bit more quietly, it's still important to me as my first public-facing lingcomm project though 💕

Fascinating how the writer can go from people were worried that dogespeak would stick around but it didn't and it's fine, to then in the very next paragraph being worried about the latest in fun silly slang which is probably equally evanescent!

Today I explained to k1 what "phatic" means K1's conclusion: oh so it's like a ritual. Me: well, sort of K1: it sounds very pointless Me: well it's a social thing. Don't play the game, suffer the consequences--exclusion K1, sotto voce: people are weird en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phatic_...

We're testing out a new Patreon thing where Lingthusiasm fans can gift bonus episodes to fellow Lingthusiasm fans who are too broke to afford them themselves, without having to exchange personal financial info I think this is neat! But the real question is what do other people think?

The Endangered Languages Project (@e-l-p.bsky.social), in partnership with the First People's Cultural Council, recently released a guide for journalists who are writing about Indigenous and minority languages. It's great. Let me show you. fpcc.ca/resource/say...

Good discussion of balancing research and community priorities

Phonobro aka the artist formerly known as Christian Uffmann, a linguist and my colleague @hhu.de, just released his second music video! After bringing glamour back into grammar, he now created his own Eurovision Song Contest contribution! www.instagram.com/p/DJi8TnpRNua/ #linguistics

New favourite example of structural ambiguity, compound word edition

It’s Framing Friday! Wherein I give the internet a little 101 lecture on “framing”—the kind of word people love to throw around in analyses of media, but that actually has an important and specific meaning in social science that you should know about! So have a thread 🧵1/

I know so many students who need to hear this one:

Even if you’re not working in language revitalization, and just want to learn how to get started (or ask general questions about the work), these folks are an AMAZING fount of knowledge, international connections, and genuinely warm & empathetic vibes. Cannot recommend them enough. #linguistics 🐦🐦

It's my newsletter for the last quarter of 2024! Featuring my podcast @lingthusiasm.bsky.social in the NYT, a linguisticsy pumpkin carving, crossovers with @llepodcast.bsky.social, more sentences no one's ever said before, and more!

I'm excited about this!!
