Webinar: Managing Electricity Demand in Times of Crisis 🗓 28 May 2025 | 🕛 12:00–13:30 CET | 💻 Zoom you can register here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

The "renewed agenda for EU-UK cooperation" adopted today prominently includes: - Exploring the participation of the UK in the EU's internal #electricity market - Working towards #linking Emission Trading Systems of the EU and the UK www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/pre...

New REMIT quarterly report [I was not aware that so much more GAS wholesale trade volumes (in TWh) are reported than ELECTRICITY trades.] www.acer.europa.eu/news/acers-l...

New JRC report on hydrogen pipelines safety challenges To me it reads, as if still substantial research (and potentially work) is needed before we can envisage a conversion from natural gas pipelines to hydrogen. publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/h...

Have your say: We have just launched a public consultation on the upcoming European Grids Package, aiming to enhance electrification and support clean energy rollout for secure, affordable energy 🌱🇪🇺 #EUHaveYourSay by 8 July → europa.eu/!jQDBgC

Reducing EU gas demand in line with RePowerEU, would allow the EU to be very picky with respect to its foreign gas suppliers. www.bruegel.org/analysis/fut... [new figure by @keliauskaite.bsky.social that I like a lot]

The US EIA posts LNG export prices - and they are pretty different for different EU countries! (my first guess would be that age and length of the contracts play an important role) www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/ng_m...

GDUkraina #FigureOfTheWeek: Hourly average of offered and allocated cross-border transmission capacity (EU → Ukraine). In 1Q2025 there was a significant increase in offered capacity during peak hours, while during off-peak hours the capacity decreased. www.linkedin.com/posts/green-...

European gas imports @bruegel.bsky.social -April LNG: record imports driven by highest-ever US LNG. RU LNG increased compared to March; -weekly gas imports decreased. LNG imports above weekly seasonal levels, AZ and ALGR are below; -storage: EU at 42% capacity, UA 4%. www.bruegel.org/dataset/euro...

🔎 Preventing future electricity blackouts requires thorough analysis 💭 Will policymakers be able to drop the rhetoric and learn the lessons needed to sustainably and efficiently reduce the risk of future blackouts? 🔗 First Glance by @gzachmann.bsky.social buff.ly/EG6o82i #EconSky

Very low capacity factors of onshore and offshore wind in Germany in the first four month of 2025 (20% below the lowest value in the past decade). According to @marcowuensch.bsky.social increasing capacities, and good solar capacity factors helped - but a development worth monitoring.

It seems that much public debate on the Iberian blackout is still illustrated by a figure that is most probably wrong [see @lionhirth.bsky.social post: www.linkedin.com/posts/lionhi... ]. For properly monitoring energy security we need reliable data. Join us Thu: www.bruegel.org/event/europe...

💡 In the wake of the blackout: why upgrading Europe's electricity grid is about more than just money ⚡ @cheussaff.bsky.social and @gzachmann.bsky.social argue that interconnection is vital for European energy security, decarbonisation and cost reduction. 🔗 buff.ly/zHVLWZx #EconSky

🆕 @bruegel.bsky.social gas demand tracker updated with March 2025 data. Demand picked up across Europe in Jan & Feb 25 relative to 2019-21 baseline - driven by higher gas-burn in the electricity sector. bruegel.org/dataset/euro... @mariejuge.bsky.social @gzachmann.bsky.social

Compared to the single price zone, splitting Germany in five zones will lead electricity wholesale prices to -increase in the South by <3% and in the West by <1% -decrease in the North by > 10-16% As network cost will also drop, impact on electricity cost in the South/West should be rather marginal.

Me, trying to share my current understanding of the yet unclear reasons of the Big Iberian outage, in very simple terms.

Day-ahead prices for Spain for today were quite low: data: www.rte-france.com/eco2mix/les-...

ITS HAPPENING: The highest positive monetised benefit in relation to criterion four (economic efficiency) compared to the status quo would be the split of Germany–Luxembourg into five BZs. www.entsoe.eu/news/2025/04...

Today, TSOs publish the "Bidding Zone Study Report" that most notably discusses if the DE (and the FR) wholesale elec markets should be allowed to have different prices in different regions. My 2p arguing that this would be good for the internal market: www.wirtschaftsdienst.eu/inhalt/jahr/...

⚡ Who should kick-start the upgrades on Europe's grid system? 🗣️ @gzachmann.bsky.social in podcast conversation with @rebeccawire.bsky.social and @cheussaff.bsky.social on how to upgrade and connect Europe's electricity grids. 🔗 Listen to the episode: buff.ly/KwnWp5x

My colleagues updated their RU trade data. -Out of the 38 export destinations monitored, the share of China (~40%) continues to rise. -for this sample, the mineral fuels share in RU exports exceeds two thirds. How much hysteresis will the RU non-fossil export industry experience after years of war?

EU and UK ETS appear to converge

Thoroughly enjoyed speaking about mega electricity network investments on @bruegel.bsky.social's podcast, with @gzachmann.bsky.social & @rebeccawire.bsky.social. We talk investment targets vs. needs, the role of EU planning, and overcoming distributional challenges. www.bruegel.org/podcast/wire...

💡How to modernise Europe's energy infrastructure? @rebeccawire.bsky.social talks to @cheussaff.bsky.social & @gzachmann.bsky.social about the urgent need to upgrade and connect Europe's electricity grids. 🔊Listen to the podcast episode:

And, maintaining the single electricity price zone also made it into the coalition treaty (because the laws of politics do not bend to the laws of physics and economics).
