A service road runs beside a rural Dutch main road. Motor traffic uses the main road; the service road is for slow vehicles, such as tractors, and local access. Cycle lanes prevent overtaking unless the opposite lane is clear, ensuring cyclist safety.

Haarlemmerdijk, Amsterdam in 1977 and today

A floating bus stop on a narrow street in the Netherlands. When a bus is serving the bus stop cars have to stop in both directions. Cycles never have to stop.

Level cycleway allows loading to take place to shops over the cycle way, whilst keeping people on bikes safe and separated from the lorries making these deliveries

We’ve literally got cars regularly smashing into pavement infrastructure at high speed outside schools but @hackneycouncil.bsky.social thinks the priority is a message about dangerous cycling. Stop reinforcing this alarmist rubbish and focus on the actual problem.

Cycle parking on barges on a canal in Amsterdam, directly outside a secondary school. These have now been removed as a new underground bicycle parking facility has since opened right next door

I miss what Twitter was. Too much of my adult life - work, friends, partners - has been bound up in it not to. But that Twitter doesn't exist any more. *Twitter* doesn't exist any more, and X is a hellhole and even if I could put up with that it'd suck because most people I want to talk to are here.

Here is a 🧵on what I think the ideal cycleway should look like, based on many years of me cycling on Dutch cycle infrastructure all over the country 👇

If last year is anything to go by later tonight this space will be filled with hundreds, possibly thousands of lime bikes outside the lido festival in Victoria Park

A cycleway alongside a main road in the Netherlands

Roggeveenstraat, Amsterdam in 1977 and today. The road has now been closed to motor traffic altogether outside a primary school, with car parking replaced by a playground, greenery and seating which allows kids and parents to safely travel to school and socialise together

And the England cricket team were on lime bikes nearby

If you design your streets only for fit adult men on racing bikes, don’t be surprised when that’s who shows up. Design for safety and comfort and everyone feels welcome to ride.
