If we choose not to act, Or fail to adapt, Then suffer we will. #ShowYourStripes

Do you like sex? How about viral pathogenesis? If you’re like me & the answer is both, we have got the preprint for you! Led by Marin Habbick in collaboration with our brilliant colleagues at RML, we showed that when it comes to MERS-CoV, it sucks to be male! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

The trend is still in Bluesky's favour. X is still larger but very regularly Bluesky easily eclipses it in terms of research being shared. Linda Yaccarino claimed X had 600m users in April. Bluesky has 36m accounts created in total.

This is an important point that I definitely agree with. Unfortunately there seems to be a fairly big effort in the reform/OS space to try and move away from this and release absolutely everything as often as possible

Interesting system: "Icebox." A way to publish findings and why they've stopped. Maybe the project's completed. Maybe it hit a roadblock, or became underwhelming. One concern (that could be addressed)... 1/5

I am once again pitching my romantic comedy: - two academics start dating - discover they are each other's terrible reviewer - hijinks ensue Working title: Love is Double-Blind

Anyone in UK have a recommendation for a -20'C under bench, spark free, alarm, and digital temp display freezer? An example of one that fits the bill: www.wolflabs.co.uk/laboratory-e... Asking for a friendly lab 🙂

Has someone found a good way of getting money out of research? Don't stop it. Copy it. APC charges cost billions. MDPI leads with over $1.7bn (est. 2015-2023). Springer-Nature ‘only’ got $1.1bn and so what do they do? They copy MDPI. the-strain-on-scientific-publishing.github.io/website/post...

🧬🌽 Happy Transposon Day! 🌽🧬 Today we celebrate the birthday of Barbara McClintock - scientist extraordinaire and discoverer of jumping genes. Still the only woman to have an unshared Nobel Prize in the biomedical sciences #TransposonDay2025

We've updated the article with a new scrape. Note: 4 big journals were missed in the previous scrape. Updating reinforces the trends. The new scrape includes Special Issues. Discover Applied Sciences = 160 SIs open. >50% of Discover journals launched in 2024/25. Discover: >1200 SIs open. #NewMDPI

Springer-Nature launched a series of "Discover" journals that closely mimic MDPI titles -- sharing *identical* journal names, and likely similar business model. What is going on, and why researcher will - as always - fall for it? A 🧵 the-strain-on-scientific-publishing.github.io/website/post...

I put a millipede on Viggo Mortenson's face.

Next week it is time to #ShowYourStripes again. We encourage everyone to download their warming stripes graphics and use them to start climate conversations on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st June. www.ShowYourStripes.info Graphic: Change in global average temperature from 1850-2024.

It's finally out! This paper took quite a while but I'm so excited to share now! For anyone who studies sex chromosomes, take note: we found a rare "slower X"! (dN/dS_X < dN/dS_Autos) 👀

Academic and still reviewing papers? Reed this post and consider again if you hear about a journal named 'Discover XXX' asking for your help...

I would like to point out that this publisher also owns protocols.io! Do we really trust out good ol' publishing houses with... anything that is important for the community?!

Watch out for these ’Discover’ journals. I got some sort of an invitation from one of them, and it immediately reminded me of MDPI. For a good reason.

I will not be reviewing for, guest editing for, or submitting manuscripts to these new bastardized journals from @springernature.com‬

New from The Strain Team: 🎊 Springer Nature Discovers MDPI 🎊 Springer Nature has spawned a copycat journal series called "Discover" mimicking #MDPI journal titles and citation behaviours. We even made a browser game to prove it (see 🔗). Gross! 😀 1/n #ResearchIntegrity #SciPub #AcademicSky

📰 The Daily Strain is back! #SpringerNature may be copying #MDPI journal names with its "Discover" series. Blog 👉 the-strain-on-scientific-publishing.github.io/website/post... Mini-Game 👉 Can you tell Discover from MDPI? pagoba.shinyapps.io/publi_guess/ @discoverjrnls.bsky.social #DiscoverOrMDPI

Pro tip, folks: if you make a figure for a publication, don’t just hand the copyright over to the publisher. Post it on OSF first and then give yourself permission to use it in the first publication and then all future publications. That way, no permissions issues.

Great opportunity if your CV fits the bill. UNIL and Lausanne are excellent places to be!

This is the inevitable path of the APC model. For-profit and values-misaligned publishers are bad for science and society. So what can you do? Here are 4 things.
