At the upcoming Spending Review, the Government can deliver a long-term settlement for the Household Support Fund, the largest form of discretionary crisis support in England. Read 'Renew and improve' today, published with support from @nuffieldfoundation.org‬ ⤵️ buff.ly/3YtKvZA

Delighted to see this VSR publication comparing Wales, Quebec and Manitoba -six years and lots of discussion in the making (I was expecting my six year old when we all met in Amsterdam!)- we examine the dynamic relationship between shifting sub-state spaces of governance and civil society:

Tidying up my desktop, came across this screenshot of Keir Starmer's views in 2020 on how best to modify Conservative welfare policies to tackle social injustice

Work is an effective route out of poverty, but the landscape for parental employment has changed a lot since the mid-2000s. The proportion of families with children in poverty who are in work has increased over recent decades; over seven in ten families in poverty already have someone in work.

On benefit cuts, Keir Starmer is “attempting to defend the indefensible”, writes @ruthpatrick0.bsky.social www.prospectmagazine...

“If universities start to fail, it will be disastrous for Labour MPs and their constituents. It would be the modern equivalent of the factory closure, or the end of the pit. “And despite how some Labour MPs seem to imagine their voters, it would be Labour’s core supporters who were most affected.”

The Fraud Bill advances to committee stage in the House of Lords next week - this means detailed, line-by-line discussion and debate. 2nd reading showed the strength of feeling about the proposed mass bank surveillance powers - millions of people could have data send from their bank to the DWP

A great read for the bank holiday weekend 📘 – our latest report, part of the Safety Nets collaboration with @resfoundation.bsky.social, looks at how the Household Support Fund can work better long-term. www.resolutionfoundation.org/publications...

The first edition of @safety-nets.bsky.social’s Annual Policymaker Reports is now available. Aimed at those shaping policy in the UK, these reports shed light on key issues surrounding child poverty and efforts to address it. safetynets.study/publications...

It's that time of year where social policy grads and postgrads might be looking for jobs etc. Here's a list of job adverts and sites to share with your students, doctoral researchers, colleagues, or perhaps for yourselves if you're looking for a move ;)

What should the Government prioritise when tackling its welfare trilemma (means-tesing winter fuel payments, cutting disability benefits and the persistence of the two child limit)? @ruthcurtice.bsky.social‬ considers the options ⤵️ buff.ly/5ibPBVM

Blog on the government's three big benefit battles. I fear the brutal maths means concessions on winter fuel mean less money for disability and child poverty. Looking at living standards trends across the piece - children would be the priority. www.resolutionfoundation.org/comment/what...

Just finished contributing to this excellent event. Really useful insights into Finland's ambitious digital developments & hearing from UC experts. Generous & helpful insights from DWP speakers, Richard Pope & always great to hear from Jane & Levana's research also. Thanks to Minna & her team.

Just because local welfare has dry names, like HSF, doesn't mean it's not interesting! As part our @safety-nets.bsky.social project, our collaborators at @resfoundation.bsky.social have led this report on the Household Support Fund. The excellent @alexclegg.bsky.social outlines more below👇

Our new report on the Household Support Fund, part of the @safety-nets.bsky.social‬ project, is out today. It draws on analysis of HSF admin data and interviews with LAs and @changingrealities.bsky.social‬ participants to identify how the HSF can be improved in a long-term settlement /Thread

Useful material for #socialpolicy teaching 👇🏻

Very much looking forward to this event tomorrow organised by Minna and her team from REPAIR project and the Finnish social security agency KELA

Drawing on in-depth research, @alwalker.bsky.social & @michaelkenny.bsky.social set out why the Council of the Nations and Regions matters for devolution in times of political fragmentation. In a new blog, they discuss what’s needed to make it work. www.bennettinstitute.cam.ac.uk/blog/why-the...

The government says its cuts to disability benefits are part of a “moral mission” to get more people working. But analysis shows fewer than 100,00 are expected to start work by the end of the parliament. Meanwhile around 3m will have disability & health related benefits cut. 1/4

Our new research found that children with poor mental health are two-thirds more likely to have reduced ability to work as adults. @theguardian.com 👇 www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

After announcing multi-billion-pound cuts to health and disability benefits, the Chancellor said that "I am absolutely certain that our reforms, instead of pushing people into poverty, are going to get people into work." New @resfoundation.bsky.social work out today puts this to the test...

Tom Hunter believes that Singapore provides a useful template for Scotland's economy. Is he right? Um, no... www.ippr.org/articles/sin...
