I thought I saw a sad bald eagle on the way into the office this morning (which felt poetic) but turns out it’s just a type of pigeon.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

"Public health saved your life today and you don't even know it." As we begin National Public Health Week, the threat to our critical but often invisible public health infrastructure is massive. So too is the need to fight to save it. People's lives are counting on it. www.pbs.org/show/the-inv...

I have tariffed the penguins that are on Heard Island and which you were probably assuming did not export goods forgive me they were taking advantage of us so cunning and so cold

The US health agencies gutted aren't household names—because they worked. That's the paradox: effective public health is invisible. Losing federal support shifts pressure to states, counties, cities. It isn't overnight—measles is quick, lead poisoning less so—but the impact is coming

A recent study found that cervical cancer deaths in young women have plummeted since the introduction of the human papillomavirus vaccine.

As Paul Farmer used to say, “We do not have the luxury of being pessimistic on other people’s behalf.” It is time to stand up for science, for global HIV and for everything we have fought so hard over decades. #CROI2025

Transgenic means that genes from 1 organism have been put into another. We make transgenic mice to understand how genes influence biological processes. We make transgenic plants to make them more nutrient rich. We make transgenic bacteria so they make medicine for us. It's wide-ranging & v. useful.

"Everyone needs to understand that threats and health problems in other places can soon become problems here." Dr. Craig Spencer of the Brown University School of Public Health spoke to Rachel last night. Watch: youtu.be/Mk9igZMaER4

It is really hard to watch people willfully tear down an infrastructure that allowed us to double lifespans, drastically reduce poverty, and become one of the richest countries in the world.

This interview was a balm. My favorite bits were the description of hummingbirds as "bundles of sass and fury" and Ed's touchstones for hope, which my heart sorely needs right now.

Just in case: @statnews.com has backed up and is monitoring #CDC 's data. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

We are still rejoicing that the beloved MMWR is back to regular weekly cadence. This week's report has two publications - one on the first case of mpox Clade 1b in the Americas, and another on influenza seroprevalence among bovine veterinarians. You can find both here: www.cdc.gov/mmwr/index.h...

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

I can't even begin to explain how bad this for science and for America www.nytimes.com/2025/02/09/s...

What does it mean that we have had two flying mustache commercials (so far) for two different brands?

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

In most states, red or blue, a university or health system is a top employer. The NIH has kept them running for years. worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankin...

NIH has cut billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

BREAKING: CDC's top advisors demand answers and a restoration of crucial public health data. New story by me: www.statnews.com/2025/02/01/c...

The USAID website is offline. www.usaid.gov

CDC removes data on sexual orientation, gender identity from website www.statnews.com/2025/01/31/c...

I know there’s a lot right now. But folks need to understand what this means. A suspension this long would mean people living with HIV lose their medicine for months. People around the world lose their PrEP for months, putting millions at risk of getting HIV. Drug-resistant strains could emerge.

This is completely NUTS! CDC ordered to stop working with WHO immediately www.statnews.com/2025/01/27/c...

Shameful and dangerous.

The title makes sense! Written by the Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, who stood up to Orange Voldemort. Everyone should be buying this. I'm buying it. #booksky
