Interesting paper: 161 researchers in 73 research teams used the same data and hypothesis (immigration reduces support for social policies among the public), but arrived at different results and conclusions. Paper in PNAS

Solar (photovoltaic) panel prices have declined from $130.7 per watt in 1975 to 0.31$ today (-99.8%).

Germany's 10-year government yield, which traded near zero for years, rose above 2.9% in March after the announcement of the €1 trillion spending package, but has since fallen to around 2.5%.

This new paper finds that the funding of Trump's election campaign was not only about money from the ultra wealthy. "Trump underperformed among wealthy Republican donors while mobilizing new non-wealthy donors. Trump also diversified the donorate, especially by education."

Providing homeless people with housing: - reduces crime - increases employment - improves health - does not increase reliance on social benefits. 80% of the costs are offset by the benefits in the first 18 months. Evidence from the US

Empirical research is often contaminated by publication bias. Our paper in the July issue of Journal of Economic Surveys shows - after correcting for publication bias, empirical effects are typically closer to 0 and may switch signs - relative reduction in effect sizes of 45%-60%

#Budgetsanierung

Productivity grows faster when aggregate demand and employment are strong, as predicted by Keynesian theory.

This is an interesting paper on how economists have become key players in central banks over the past decades, showing how economic expertise grew in influence and the roles economists play inside central banks (e.g. collecting data, building models).

"Google Scholar is manipulatable... we analyze over 1.6 million Google Scholar profiles and identify instances of citation manipulation to boost an author’s citation metrics. In many cases, this was done through a previously undocumented practice of 'citation purchasing' "

"individuals who speak a language in which the same word is used for both (financial) debt and (moral) guilt have a statistically significant and economically meaningful lower likelihood of borrowing money... a hitherto overlooked aspect in explaining borrowing behaviour."

Fascinating map of the geographic concentration of votes for the right-wing nationalist candidate in Poland‘s presidential elections (blue): urban liberalism clinging on in Warsaw and other large Polish cities (orange), outpaced by the votes in smaller, relatively declining areas

The bureaucracy cost index of Destatis (Germany's statistical office) shows that 🇩🇪 bureaucracy costs at the federal level have *declined* by ~6% since 2012.

Clubs and networks in economics: Authors with connections to editors via same PhD program, work or co-author networks more often avoid desk rejection. Referee decisions are influenced by PhD/employment matches and signalling. Greater connectivity papers receive fewer citations.

The tyranny of the top-5 journals in economics: "Pursuit of top-5 publications has become the obsession of the next generation of economists... Reliance on the T5 to screen talent incentivizes careerism over creativity... incentivizes professional incest and clientele effects"

The fabricated paper on large positive productivity effects of AI already had a Revise&Resubmit at QJE; Acemoglu and David Autor had praised it. Time to think about incentive structures in econ, when 2nd year PhD students fake papers to publish in a top-5 and gain visibility?!

A widely circulated paper on allegedly large positive effects of AI on scientific discovery was fabricated and has been withdrawn after an internal MIT review: "no confidence in the provenance, reliability or validity of the data... The author [PhD student] is no longer at MIT"
