Article I, Section 9, Clause 8: “no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

Wonderful to see AGU standing up for what is right. As an AGU member and Fellow I could not be more proud! Thank you @agu.org

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

Google wouldn’t exist #WithoutNSF. Page and Brin started Google based on NSF-funded research they did at Stanford, which has made Stanford, Google, and lots of other people a lot of money. It’s made the rest of us stupid but that’s another topic.

😓 These are the folks who provide satellite imagery, maps, and geospatial support to American scientists that operate in polar regions where most satellites don’t reach. FOR DECADES they have done this, supporting critical work. They have helped me many times. This is terrible. #WithoutNSF

The Merlin Bird ID app wouldn’t exist #WithoutNSF. 🪶

It’s important that all Americans realise what things would be like #withoutNSF This is your National Science Foundation that pays for scientific research and brought you things that you use and rely on in your daily lives. Without it, we will crumble as a nation. www.nsf.gov/impacts

Delighted to write for this first issue of this new journal Dialogues of Climate Change @dialoguescc.bsky.social Thank you so much to @drrobbellamy.bsky.social for inviting me, and thanks to my coauthors Ben Galton-Fenzi, @bryonyfreer.bsky.social and @capcomcatwalk.bsky.social

ESA's #BIOMASS satellite launches today! Using radar, it will measure forest mass, track carbon storage, and help scientists monitor climate change. You can watch the launch live on ESA Web TV from 10:00AM (BST). #SpaceForClimate #EarthObservation #ClimateAction #NCEO

I will be tuning in to the House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the NRC hearing on Exploring the Potential of Deep-Sea Mining to Expand American Mineral Production. www.youtube.com/watch?v=s75c...

“The American public needs to understand that you can’t just turn a science switch off and then turn it back on again,” said Rick Spinrad. Great reporting by @sachimulkey.bsky.social on the current dismantling of US scientific research capacity: what it means for now--and for future generations.

Deaths from heart disease down 75%, that’s NIH. Deaths from stroke down 75%, that’s NIH. HIV/AIDS no longer a death sentence, that’s NIH. 99% of FDA approved drugs in the last decade, that’s NIH. Please show this video to anyone who doesn’t understand why the NIH is so important.

In 100 days in office, US President Donald Trump has destabilized eight decades of government support for science. This has included terminating more than 1,000 grants in areas such as climate change, cancer, and HIV prevention. Will US science survive Trump 2.0? www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Today is the big day! Happy #EarthDay from NOAA! Check out noaa.gov/Earthday, & visit noaa.gov any time for the latest Earth science news, scientific research discoveries & ways you can get involved to help our home planet.

Happy Earth Day! 🌍 Delighted to present this new book all about Antarctica. 🇦🇶 I was coauthor on Chapter 7 led by Ben Galton-Fenzi. Congratulations to the many other authors involved and to @oceanandice.bsky.social for leading us all! 🌊

Happy Earth Day 🌍💚🌏

For those of wondering why there haven’t been any EOs on climate change research yet - it’s because they’ve been waiting for Earth Day, which is Tuesday. Happy Earth week. 🌎🌍🌏

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

“Reducing and streamlining the Department of Commerce’s external financial assistance programs is a key part of its efforts to be a responsible steward of federal funding from hard-working American taxpayers.” Really?

#HandsOff protest in San Diego

People packed the streets across the U.S. on Saturday to protest against President Trump, his administration's cutbacks, financial turmoil and more. nyti.ms/43GRvS7

We take tariffs on our beautiful Heard Island very seriously. We will be consulting all mammals and flightless birds and will make an announcement in the near future detailing our response. #heardisland #tariff #mcdonaldisland #trumptariff

First they deport you. Then they tariff you. Then they ask you to thank them. We will show them what real ICE agents are….

Tariffs even for penguins! 🐧

Thank you for sharing my testimony!

An excellent article. The list of 60 universities the administration claimed to be investigating because of protests had one other thing in common: >$1B endowments. The “head down” approach won’t work. That list of 60 should work together, not each individually try to protect themselves.

When scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave U.S. universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.

Asked if he’s concerned about retaliation, The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg says: “Unfortunately, in our society today—we see this across corporate journalism and law firms and other industries—there’s too much preemptive obeying for my taste.” THANK YOU @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social! 👏 #SignalGate

Iceberg A23a pictured from the ISS. The space station is almost as far south as it can reach here (51.5° S, 49.0° W - altitude of 422km). Picture taken on 14 March, so the berg had been grounded at South Georgia for a fortnight by this time.

The Trump administration announced plans to expand drilling in the Arctic, including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Interior Department stated it would begin steps to open the entire 1.56 million-acre Coastal Plain of the refuge to oil and gas exploration.

Sanders: Does anybody think it makes sense that we have a campaign finance system where one man (Musk) can put $270 million to get Trump elected and then his reward is that he becomes the most powerful person in government? That is not democracy. That is oligarchy.

It's the first International Day of #Glaciers! The ice worldwide is under threat due to rapid #climatechange. This day puts a spotlight on glaciers as a vulnerable but globally relevant element of the climate system. It is not yet too late to save them! @vaw-glaciology.bsky.social

We’ve just published the most detailed map yet of the landscape beneath Antarctica’s ice sheet (called Bedmap3), and we learnt some pretty cool facts about Antarctica that you can use to impress your pals. Ready? Graphic: Hamish Pritchard et al
