Brain fodder!!

The weather is lovely so this is just a small reminder to never have a BBQ in an enclosed area, e.g. inside a tent or even under an awning. Also, even if coals are cold enough to hold with your bare hands, they can still emit significant amounts of carbon monoxide. #carbonmonoxide

Our research is currently all about carbon monoxide and its impact on health, but I find it is not really possible to not pay attention to wider air pollution patterns.

Unthinkable just 10 years ago: Almost 3/4 of the EU’s electricity in 2024 was from renewable energy sources and nuclear. Gas and coal electricity generation is at record low levels.

Funding Call - Wellcome Career Development Awards fund mid-career researchers to lead bold research and become global leaders in health, life, and wellbeing-related fields. Closing date: 24th July www.dementiaresearcher.nihr.ac.uk/funding/well...

For anyone interested in why CO alarm levels matter (or, indeed, just want to know at which CO level your alarm will sound - hint, it needs a pretty high dose), I can recommend this white paper: www.ncoaa.us/resources/lo...

A powerful moment, charged with sadness for a life that could have been but also hope for the future and the huge fortitude of Ella’s mother and family. Honoured to be in south east London this afternoon for the unveiling of Ella's statue. www.bigissue.com/news/environ...

Most of the Sheffield CO Research group (plus two collaborators) will be speaking tomorrow for the April edition of the CO Research Trust lecture series. There's a lot of work gone into these slides, and I'm very lucky to be working with this fantastic team. www.linkedin.com/posts/the-co...

I am grateful to @cancerresearchuk.org for choosing to support our work aiming to understand the links between distorted embryonic development and neuroblastoma initiation using our human pluripotent stem cell differentiation model: www.sheffield.ac.uk/biosciences/...

Hiring soon! I am looking for a preclinical imaging physicist with MRI experience. We will be investigating gas exchange in the mammalian brain, with a particular focus on oxygen. Using a gas contrast agent to ask fundamental questions about gas exchange and cerebral perfusion #hiring #neuroscience

ULEZ is working—saving lives and protecting children from deadly air pollution. This is why it matters. Listen to Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah CBE from The Ella Roberta Foundation, as she shares her powerful story about the impact of toxic air and why clean air policies are so important.

Delighted at having had the opportunity to speak to key stakeholders and policy makers at the CO and pregnancy symposium in London last week, presenting new numbers about CO exposure levels in UK homes. Pre-print here: www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

Happy International Women's Day! I am lucky to work with fantastic women daily, including some excellent students who I am sure will go on to do great things. So here's to all the marvellous women in science.

Each year we run #BritishScienceWeek #BSW25 - in 2025 it takes place 7-16 March 🥳 To help you celebrate the Week, we have published 4 FREE activity packs for young people and community groups. They're full of 'Change & adapt'-themed fun 😍🪱! www.britishscienceweek.org/activity-pac... #BSW25

Today I had the very good fortune to be part of the International Women's Day Science Event for Science Week 2025, thanks to @mellacey.bsky.social. Top marks to the visiting students from nearby Schools who were fully engaged and asked really good questions.

The US embassies’ air quality data were sometimes the only reliable data in an entire country and influenced local air quality policies. We used the Indonesian US embassy data extensively and co-located our lo-cost PM sensors by their regulatory-grade ones. 😔 www.nytimes.com/2025/03/04/c...

This series by @momrunninglate.bsky.social is really nice. Good to see May-Britt Moser included as well. I remember her getting the Nobel, and was more than a little chuffed that it went to (a) a woman, (b) in neuroscience, from (c) my alma mater, NTNU. Really lovely work!

A small reminder to make sure you have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in your home, that it is within date and bought from a reputable store (hint: many CO alarms available on e.g. amazon look nice but do not work at all).

Join us Thurs 6 March at the Millennium Gallery to kick off British Science Week! Explore the science of colour—from fluorescent microscopy revealing nature’s beauty to chemical reactions shaping beer’s hue and taste 🍺 @sheffieldmuseums.bsky.social @hallam-biosci-chem.bsky.social Find out more ⬇

🚨You have until the end of this week to apply for our Mid-Career Researcher Prize!🚨 Researchers within 6 -15 years of your PhD or MD are eligible to apply for this prize, which will award the winner with £1,000 and a Review published in Experimental Physiology 🔗https://buff.ly/3l2c5oW

’Super pollutants’ are responsible for around 45% of global warming to date. Cutting emissions is seen as one of the quickest ways to tackling climate change and preventing millions of deaths from these pollutants.

Interesting question as to whether ‘Endothelium is a type of epithelial?’ Definitely worth a read.

I attended a talk by Jocelyn Bell Burnell many years ago. She was an excellent speaker; as eloquent when talking science as when discussing her career and the Nobel Prize winning discovery. Utterly inspiring.
