New Episode! What was Cook’s first voyage actually hoping to achieve? What was the background of the collaboration between the Royal Society and the Admiralty? The answers to these questions and more in this episode! historyaotearoa.com/2025/06/22/1...

@swordscomic.bsky.social Thanks for leaving out the game in the evening! Didn’t get a chance to come see you today but will try tomorrow. Really enjoyed the little taster!!

I’m off to Wellycon for the first time today to play some board games. Very exciting! I know some mutuals are going as well so if you spot me in my Speight’s cheese cutter hat, feel free to come over and say hello!

Today is the public holiday of Matariki here in Aotearoa! Signalled by the rising of the star cluster Matariki (aka Pleiades), it begins the new year in the Māori lunar calendar and has historically been an important marker in their horticultural cycle! Happy Matariki!

Have you attended @intelligentspeech.bsky.social, the annual online conference where your favorite history podcasters are the presenters? It's a blast — check out some past talks on their YouTube channel: And please subscribe! They need 100 subscribers to qualify for a YouTube tier.

On top of humanities and social sciences being cut from eligibility for the Marsden Fund, changes to 're-balance' the histories curriculum, attacks on the Waitangi Tribunal, etc, it seems clear the government would prefer we remain in ignorance about our history. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Reminder that the first episode on James Cook is up on the Patreon feed right now! It comes out on the main feed tomorrow but if you sign up for $5 a month or more, you get access to bonus episodes too, like this one all about British society in the late 18th century! www.patreon.com/posts/hanz-w...

As a web librarian I cannot stress enough how important websites like Te Ara, NZHistory, and the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography are for researchers of all kinds. These sites were built with the idea that they would exist in perpetuity for all New Zealanders to access.

Incredible news for NZ cultural history researchers The first 20 years of the NZ Listener (1939-1959) are now available on NLNZ's Papers Past platform, through the editorships of Oliver Duff & Monte Holcroft paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/periodicals/...

This game has been on my radar for a little while so it's awesome to see a new video for Ahoy from Capstan Games (great name) explaining more about the vision for game! Very relevant to HANZ listeners' interests at the momentas we look at James Cook! www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccwg...

If you are desperate to get cracking into the story of James Cook the first episode is already up on Patreon! Just sign up for $5 a month to get episodes early! Not only does this support the podcast but you will get access to bonus content on Cook in the future too! www.patreon.com/posts/158-hu...

No new episode this week! I'm spending the time getting all my ducks in a row for the next set of episodes on James Cook. They are coming along nicely so we should be ready to go in two weeks and then episodes will be temporarily releasing WEEKLY after that!

Here is June's tourism poster! Railways Dept. c.1930

The ship figurehead in question (wolverine on the base)

In the early 20th Century, old figureheads of ships featured as items of statuary in New Zealand gardens. In this blog we examine the HMS Wolverine, whose figurehead adored the garden of a residence in Devonport, Auckland. #gardenhistory gardenhistoryresearchfoundation.com/2025/05/25/s...

I KNEW IT WAS COMING AND IT STILL SCARED ME

At least two parliamentarians, multiple place names and a lot of capital: my research uncovers significant NZ connections with Caribbean slavery. buttondown.com/unsettling/a...

We were actually in two episodes published on Sunday! We've helped @historyaotearoa.bsky.social look at Sweden in 1769! This was a seminal year in the history of 🇳🇿 so we've joined his 'world tour' to see what was happening elsewhere. Highly recommend his show! historyaotearoa.com/2025/05/18/1...

New Episode! For the final part of our tour across the globe we head to the chillier parts of Europe to see what was going on for them! Thanks to @flatpacksweden.bsky.social and @primefactorspod.bsky.social for doing all the legwork for this episode! historyaotearoa.com/2025/05/18/1...

I'll have what he's having

I've posted a bunch of videos on my Insta of some of the awesome medieval fights I watched yesterday at Brewtown! Love the sound suits of armour clanking around!! www.instagram.com/historyaotea...

Got an awesome drinking cup at the medieval bash today!

An article in The Press about the Domestic Workers' Union, 14th November 1907. Housemaids were demanding a minimum weekly wage of 15 shillings (about 160 NZD today) and a maximum work week of 68 hours.

Gonna watch some dudes beat the shit out of some other dudes tomorrow

CBS on the cardinals: "One thing we know they're not doing is checking Instagram because their devices have all been confiscated. I believe the kids call it rawdogging."

Gandalf and eagles at Wellington Airport are coming down after 12 years! www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Very excited to have received a book that I've been wanting to properly read for a while! The story of a Catholic missionary in Japanese occupied Burma, my great-great uncle!

It's now May which means a new tourism poster! Railways Dept. 1935

YEAAAAA

Sure you can't beat Wellington on a good day but by god does she have some REALLY bad days

(Not sure how accurate it is, but) story goes that she landed in a tree & was tangled in her parachute, a man from the French Resistance came to her aid and said, looking up "the trees grow such beautiful fruit this time of year!" to which she said "cut it out with that French shit and get me down."

Never forget that Nancy Wake: - Has whakapapa to Tainui. - Killed an SS sentry with HER BARE HANDS. - Cycled 500 kilometres in 72 hours through occupied France to deliver codes to the resistance.

If you live in Wellington, there is a little info plaque about on Oriental Parade where she used to live!

MOOSE SIGHTING ALERT

April 27 is Moehanga Day, the anniversary of the day in 1806 when Ngāpuhi warrior Moehanga became the first Māori to visit England. This is his story. thespinoff.co.nz/atea/26-04-2...
