Without going all "arrrrgh Centrists" there is a certain sort of pundit who simply does not believe that there can be organic popular responses to political events, that every event is controlled by explicitly political actors such as "the groups". This is a conspiracy theory.

I think culturally, Americans have a tendency to view themselves as the scrappy underdogs no matter what and this is toxic when you are the most powerful country ever in a world you ordered to benefit yourself. Leads to a self-destructive victimhood complex from a position of privilege.
