This is one of the most profound essays I’ve read in years. You don’t need me to tell you that Hanif Abdurraqib is one of the finest writers of our time, but this essay in particular is a hard-won offering. Please read it and share with people you love.

getting a start on this now because it's been an expensive month and our june bills are going to be here before we know it. raising money to cover rent, utilities, food, and medical expenses for june. due 6/11. #transCrowdfund #disabilityCrowdfund #helpSky

CRHE does great work, y’all should pick up a monthly recurring donation if you have the means. responsiblehomeschooling.org/support-crhe/ #HomeschoolChat

As a 100% homeschooled person, I spend plenty of time thinking about the implications and systems dynamics of homeschooling. This space looks healthy and important

Grateful to have @responsiblehs.bsky.social bringing #HomeschoolChat to BlueSky. Some final reflections: Mental health is connected to so many different aspects of life, and formative years spent being isolated, neglected, indoctrinated, and abused have long-lasting consequences. It matters. A lot.

This was the first #HomeschoolChat we've done in over two years. And the first ever on Bluesky, a space where we're just starting to find our footing. The participation today was off the charts. I'm thrilled that we're able to connect with our community again this way. Thank y'all so much.

A4: I feel like everyone should be aware of the developmental delays caused by intense childhood indoctrination and understand these delays are often desired by the parents. Be supportive of these kids by focusing on them being unique individuals and not just extensions of their parents.

"I don't have to take the bait every time." Love this. #HomeschoolChat

In the 2021-2022 school year, 96% of U.S. public schools offered some mental health services to their students. But kids who are homeschooled have no guaranteed access to those kinds of resources. Tonight's #HomeschoolChat illustrates how urgently that needs to change.

@responsiblehs.bsky.social we're trending - hooray!?!?

A4: Listen to them and validate their concerns. Support their interests. Encourage them to go after their goals and dreams. Invite them places. Make sure they know you're thinking of them and have their best interest in mind. #HomeschoolChat

Just show up, address children as people, model kindness and respect, provide opportunities to get out in the community. The folks who hosted language classes, pool time, etc. in my homeschooling group weren't all as controlling as my parents, but my parents thought they were safe. That helped.

People who aren't in the homeschool community would be SHOCKED to see how little there is by way of legal protections to prevent this from happening. #HomeschoolChat

Positive examples of people living with and managing mental health conditions openly; more consistent access to third spaces and extracurriculars (I got grounded a lot for the most minor shit); adults who would stand up to my parents when they knew what was happening #homeschoolchat

Kids need to be with other kids! Social interaction outside the home is crucial for emotional, social, and physical development. #HomeschoolChat

Mental health was addressed as either being in line with God or against God. Prayer was the only solution, and eventually judgement and restriction (i.e. can't be around friends) if mental health did not improve. Was told to smile always or else people would not see Jesus through me.

A2: Everything boiled down to demonic activity or personal failure. There was absolutely no understanding what actually impacts mental health or any healthy means for addressing it. #HomeschoolChat

To be anxious or depressed meant you weren’t trusting Jesus enough — and were therefore a bad Christian. There was enormous pressure to appear mentally well and therapy was demonized and made fun of. I didn’t know anyone who had been in therapy until I was in my 20s 😬 #homeschoolchat

Not well. Denial, ignorance, shame and stigma, "just turn to G_d."

For kids being bullied in school or otherwise not served well by the system, homeschooling can be a lifeline for them. #HomeschoolChat

A1: not having access to any materials about mental health PLUS having no adults in my life other than my parents checking in on me meant I went undiagnosed for autism, anxiety, and depression. Which . . . really sucks!

A) being homeschooled and being abused were separate but tightly related experiences. So, childhood trauma. B) late-diagnosed (as an adult) cognitive differences and mental health needs, though I'm old enough it might have been missed in mainstream school back then, too.

Being isolated to such an extreme extent is too common of an experience for many homeschooled kids. That's why it's so important for our community to have access to extracurricular activities, third spaces, and other means to connect with people outside of our bubbles. #HomeschoolChat

We are so back. #HomeschoolChat
