The biggest mistake Dems in red states make is NOT CALLING THEIR REPUBLICAN reps. Calling your rep - ESPECIALLY if they're Republican, is *critical*. Otherwise they just hear from supporters and think they're doing a great job. americansofconscience.com/faq-calling-...

Transit and active transportation advocates should be constantly bringing up these statistics: Driving is far more dangerous than taking transit, by every measure. The more we can get people out of cars, the safer everyone will be. www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-p...

I gave a campus talk last night on Trump's first 100 days for the WUD Society & Politics group. A student asked me if I thought that, at some point, we might start to describe the US as a competitive authoritarian regime. I said that we were already there, it's just that most folks haven't noticed:

Shocking investigation by @calmatters.org: California DMV routinely allows drivers "with horrifying histories of dangerous driving, including DUIs, crashes and numerous tickets" to continue to drive. "Many keep driving even after they kill. Some go on to kill again." calmatters.org/investigatio...

This morning at 5AM, the City closed the gates to cars at Lincoln and Sloat, beginning the Great Highway’s transformation into an oceanfront park. As we prepare to open a permanent park, we’re excited to share the work underway to make the most of our coast. Starting on day 1.

Here is the pre-RFK vaccination schedule for your kids. Please download it before he is confirmed and changes/deletes it. Give it to your pediatrician and say this is the schedule you want your kids on. Making this my pinned post.

The Stonewall Riots happened because trans people, particularly of color, rose up against state violence. You can’t even begin to tell the story without our trans ancestors and elders. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/n...

Rest in peace, Professor Shoup (1938-2025) We will keep up the good work. Share your stories and thoughts with the parking reform community here: parkingreform.org/donald-shoup

There's a standard pattern when a city like London or Stockholm adopts congestion pricing: It's initially unpopular b/c drivers view congestion pricing as a tax, but support grows as locals see it reducing traffic and improving urban life. Looks like it's happening in NYC, too -- and quickly.

Hey @bart.gov your signs at 19th St are acting up - showed an arriving train as an SFO train and then it went the Berryessa direction! 20+ riders had to get off and swap at Lake Merritt :(

We are living through Republicanism boiled down to its essence: Everyone should be deprived of everything, because otherwise, somebody I don't like might get something I don't want them to have. We call it an ideology, but it's really a personality: Greedy, withholding, suspicious, angry, cruel.

This by Dan Savage is I think important to keep top of mind. It speaks to the point I made earlier that bad news is never the only news.

When a single billionaire can accumulate more money in 10 seconds than their employees make in one year, while workers struggle to meet the basic cost of rent and medicine, then yes, every billionaire really is a policy failure. Read our op-ed here ⤵️

Road Hazard: Evidence Mounts on Toxic Pollution from Tires Researchers are only beginning to uncover the toxic cocktail of chemicals, microplastics, and heavy metals hidden in car and truck tires. e360.yale.edu/features/tir... docs.google.com/document/d/1...

New Freddie Mac paper 1. The U.S. has a housing shortage of 3.7 million homes—roughly the number of housing units in New Jersey, or Arizona. 2. Lower supply --> higher prices --> fewer new households formed. FM estimates 1 million households delayed this century due to housing costs

Just after last weekend's tornado warning, an SFPD officer driving too fast for conditions struck and killed a pedestrian near Bayshore & Industrial. The unnamed pedestrian is the 39th traffic fatality of the year, a victim of car-focused streets and police impunity.

“For half a century, a litany of federal policies has favored large SUVs & trucks, pushing automakers & buyers toward larger models. Instead of counteracting #CarBloat thru regulation, policymakers have subtly encouraged it. That has been a boon for car companies but a disaster for everyone else.”

Americans intuitively know that insurers have increased profits while reducing access to healthcare, but here’s someone in the inside admitting it: www.nytimes.com/2024/12/18/o...

public service announcement to improve Google search results as the internet continues to decay toward uselessness:

The California Coastal Commission voted unanimously today to grant permit approval for the City of San Francisco to convert the Great Highway from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard to a full-time park that will prioritize pedestrian & bicycle access, enhance public safety & restore vital coastal dunes.

I don't know who needs to know this, but Pro Publica has an online thing that will format a letter to your US health insurance company to demand the records behind a claim denial. (which the insurance is then legally required to provide in most cases) projects.propublica.org/claimfile/

“As usual, we’re trying to play catch-up and figure out how we’re going to address the problems that have been created by this thing that we thought was a solution.” I spoke to @naterogers.bsky.social about those LED headlights that are way too bright.

I tossed in a story for @streetsblogusa.bsky.social about the @usdot.bsky.social's better "five-star" rating system for cars. Finally, someone cares about people outside the vehicle! usa.streetsblog.org/2024/11/19/s...
