An example of fauxtomation where the supposed benefits of AI instead mean work is passed on to the person who isn’t being paid for it (the customer/user). (Sadly not at all surprised to see academic publishing doing this -it’s a model already built on exploitation)

Excited that Noah Caldwell's work is officially out in @igsoc.bsky.social Journal of Glaciology! Noah used satellite remote sensing to estimate how much ice is being lost to iceberg calving and subaqueous melt on 55 Alaska lake-terminating glaciers. Read more: doi.org/10.1017/jog....

Just a reminder that these AI detectors are as garbage as the AI tools themselves.

If they did it to any other UK university, however, the media elite wouldn’t even notice.

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

I’ll never get over how, in an era when women’s rights and status are being attacked and eroded in law and culture alike, we were incessantly told that it was boys and men whose suffering we needed to attend to.

had some fun looking at rocks by the water this morning ⚒️

There is no argument anymore. There is no ethical LLM, there is no LLM "from the left" - this is a tool of technofascism propped up by technofascists.

I’m lucky enough to have many international friends and colleagues. I’ve seen the exorbitant expense, the hoop jumping and the anxiety they are put through to live in the UK. It has never been easy. This is simply performative cruelty to appease a group who will never vote Labour.

I try not to be alarmist about Labour but if you're not white, the phrase 'island of strangers' tells an immediate story about how the government classifies you

Apparently surface rupture during the Myanmar 2025. I'm very surprised by the weak shaking along the rupture. I'm not sure if this is the main rupture (I would say no - nonetheless, VERY COOL). Author unknown, location Thazi (to be confirmed)

“Grok allows users to make deepfakes depicting things like Mickey Mouse wearing a Nazi uniform. Musk has called it ‘the most fun AI in the world.’ Boxtown residents say they have been paying for the images with their health.”

I think we are great risk of a future where unregulated use of tech turns America’s educational system into something even more segregated and classist than it is today - poor kids get largely automated “education” and surveillance discipline, rich kids get gentle low-tech instruction from humans.

I see the EHRC, Bridget Phillipson and the Supreme Court are #MakingWomenSafe "I said: “Would you like to see my tits?” "I started unzipping my hoodie. He panicked: 'No no no, don’t do that!'"

"You said autistic children are a burden. That they ruin families. That they’ll never pay taxes or write poems. That they are, in essence, collateral damage. I’d like to introduce you to my daughter."

In case it’s unclear: products like this strip everyone of consent. It means that one person in a public space wearing these glasses has made a decision for everyone else.

This is what I mean when I say transphobes don't oppose "males" in "women's spaces"--they oppose trans women specifically and hope that disgust of us will help police how all women look and behave

PGC have been vital in processing and providing satellite imagery, digital elevation models, maps and other geospatial data to scientists for decades. Polar science needs this work to continue. #saveNSF #withoutNSF 🧪

You are now required to have a cellphone to citizen. That should not be allowed. You should not be required to have a cellphone to work. But many employers make a cellphone a de facto requirement. It’s anti-poor. But it’s also anti-democratic.

If you're a grad student or an undergrad interested in research I need to you listen to me very carefully. You cannot learn to write good research papers if you do not read good research papers. Stop asking LLMs to summarize papers for you.

Sorry but "a brutal time for young men" is absurd. People saying "try to be nicer and respect everyone" over the past 20 years is not why a kid named Big Balls is in charge of Social Security. Also maybe ask some non-white males how long they've been told "YOU'RE BAD". It ain't new.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

I bring a bulldozer and destroy your house, while you are away at work. You come back, and are pissed. But I did not harm you, I say, just your habitat!

From an ethical perspective, is it cool to violate the rules and norms of a community and experiment on people without their informed consent? www.reddit.com/r/changemyvi...

If you can't manage to carry your bags to an empty bin, you're probably too irresponsible to be entrusted with the life of a dog.

African workers labeling data and providing content moderation are the invisible backbone of AI development. They perform critical labor under challenging conditions, often for minimal pay, yet remain absent from our conversations about the AI value chain.

Maybe if trans people start wearing robot costumes NYT columnists will finally say we deserve human rights

On the day the government announced plans to jail cyclists for life if they kill pedestrians, yet another “oh sorry, I was distracted” driver who killed a cyclist walks from court with no jail time (2 years suspended). www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

If the govt can expel a U.S. citizen who is a toddler and who has cancer, they can do this to you and everyone you care about.

If you want to know how serious our decline in the UK, when North Carolina did what the Labour Government and EHRC have done, the then UK Government told LGBT+ people to beware travelling there. (Credit to @kazhawa.bsky.social.) www.voanews.com/amp/uk-issue...

One of the joys of looking in old books are the old maps. This map shows water currents in the Great Lakes deduced from drifting bottles in 1895
