Golang makes up for the benefits of type aliases and generics and arbitrary key and value types for maps with nil pointer and zero value shenanigans.

The Tea Party protests in April 2009 had about a third of a million people involved, and the political media treated it like a game changer for the Obama presidency. The No Kings rallies were AT LEAST ten times bigger than the Tea Party protests. Will the press keep pretending Trump is popular?

Wouldn't be surprised if more people chanted "USA! USA!" for longer in Austin today for the No Kings protest than at this parade. I like WWII equipment as much as the next dude but I know which events were more patriotic.

About 1.5% of the U.S. population protested today. (Closer to 1.9% if you only count the adult population.)

the story today is of a profoundly low energy military parade being met with millions of americans in nationwide protests denouncing the dictatorial pretensions of the president

In a direct protest against the @iea.org's plea to use the custom chatbot to explore this report, I am going to read the entire thing (all 304 pages) using my actual brain, and this thread will be where I dump reactions, thoughts, notes etc as I go through it www.iea.org/reports/ener...

I haven't set up a @longhornphp.com account yet here, but Longhorn PHP is back for its sixth (!) year this October. As usual, we're at Holiday Inn Austin Midtown Thursday-Saturday; dates for this year are October 23-25. CFP is open; submit talks at cfp.longhornphp.com. See y'all there?

Heads-up @crankyflier.com, Southwest is showing WGA fares as Basic. This is for a flight that I haven't changed since I bought it as WGA.

Night of the Long Threads

Calling it now: the acquirers of Walgreens sell off the real estate for more valuable locations, swap to smaller storefronts where possible, shut down a bunch of stores, spin off international markets, and then sell the remaining US stores to UnitedHealth by mid-2028.

you really just can't make this stuff up

Seems like there's been an uptick in SAML vulnerabilities popping up. This indicates to me that either a new tool for finding them got popular or a widely used tool got an upgrade around this detection. Anyone know which happened, and which tool?

After Elon Musk has been insinuating to turn off Starlink in Ukraine, Poland‘s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is reminding Musk that Poland is paying for it, and he is making clear that if Musk follows through that Poland will abandon Starlink altogether for being an unreliable service.

The thought of Southwest merging with JetBlue makes me grumpy. The operating model clash would probably be the death of both airlines, and I actually don't mind either of them.

Just imagine what Trump and Vance would say to Lai or anyone from Taiwan for that matter…

If I wrote this, you all would say I was taking the bit too far, wouldn't you?

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

Batteries FTW! Batteries dumped ~4.5GW onto the grid this morning, keeping power spot prices ~26¢/kWh (day-ahead was like 3.5x that) despite record winter load. If we had had this kind of capacity back in Uri it would've been tight (low wind) but lights would've stayed on.

Good morning with good news: Chile is using wind and solar to rapidly decarbonize its grid. Wind and solar skyrocketed from 5.50% of Chile's electricity in January 2016 to 42.93% in January 2025! Jan 2025 43% Jan 2022 31% Jan 2019 14% Jan 2016 5.50% Rapid decarbonization! #energysky #greensky

This is why so many Jews are skeptical of the national GOP claim of support — it rings hollow & opportunistic. Vance visits a Nazi concentration camp, lays a wreath at a statue stating “Never Again,” calls it an “unspeakable evil,” & then promptly meets with & promotes a German Nazi-aligned party.

Europe will have to defend itself now. Yet its armies struggle to find enough soldiers, or the money to pay them. If only Europe could leverage the desire of millions of non-Europeans to gain European citizenship, as a way to recruit soldiers! Alas, no one has ever devised such a system

📢 #PaxEx PR | @flynorse.com to wet-lease six B787-9s to IndiGo for long-haul routes. The aircraft will start operation in March.

Around 35% of SpaceX’s revenue comes directly from the federal govt. Less than 1% of NPR’s budget comes from the federal govt.

Wait, people are surprised by this news?

So focused on AI that they can't ship a functioning auto-upgrade feature.

Musk gonna threaten and/or sue
