£274M. This they proudly present, at the same time they are making 38 people compulsory redundant…. To save £3.8M www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

You won’t find many academic posts in the uk. Most universities are downsizing their workforces and cutting costs aggressively. Most have hiring freezes. To think the uk can absorb any realistic number of international academics at the moment is naive.

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

A reminder that as we grimly watch the dismantling of US scientific research, we're not doing great here in the UK either. Just a slower decline.

FUN FACT: Since 2019, Nigel Farage's Reform has taken more than £2.3 MILLION from oil and gas interests - making up an astonishing 92% of the party's donations. Reform are NOT for ordinary people. They're in the pockets of the big oil lobby.

PGC have been vital in processing and providing satellite imagery, digital elevation models, maps and other geospatial data to scientists for decades. Polar science needs this work to continue. #saveNSF #withoutNSF 🧪

I'm really pleased to highlight our Hidden Landscapes of Greenland Storymap Series, which was awarded a 2025 Silver Publisher's Award by the Geographical Association! You can find out more details here, inc. storymaps, a video, teacher resources and more: www.antarcticglaciers.org/glaciers-and...

Icebergs? The size of a city? 90 miles from the UK? Must be a joke, right? No! Our new paper in @natcomms.nature.com shows massive tabular icebergs broke off the UK in the last ice age before the UK’s ice shelves disintegrated from climate warming. 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41... @bas.ac.uk

I'm writing a new comic!! 🤩 The project, supported by the Curry Fund, explores the transformation of Arctic landscapes and the people who study them. This project will take me to the Tarfala Research Station in Sweden, looking at climate change through the ice, rocks, and flowers.

For any early career scientists out there with interests in glaciology, oceanography and machine learning, Northumbria University's 'Future of Ice on Earth' research group is currently advertising a 3-year postdoc position you may want to look at! Please share with anyone who might be interested.

We couldn’t end #WomensHistoryMonth without shining light on one of history’s most prominent palaeontologists, Mary Anning! Let’s take a look at her incredible life and the discoveries she made, including some of the specimens you can see today in the Museum! 🔍 🦴

Year-end scramble getting you down? ⏳ Applications for lots of our Antarctic #jobs are closing in the next week. They include vehicles manager at Halley, and Radio Operator and IT Engineer at Rothera Research Station. These are jobs unlike any other, in one of the most beautiful places on Earth ⬇️

The 273 billion tons of ice lost in a single year (through glacier melt) is equivalent to the water consumption of the entire world population for 30 years, assuming three liters per person per day. Happy Glacier Day!

It's World Glacier Day. Global warming means they are melting. We know this from historical photos comparing their extent to now. We know this from detailed measurements of their length & thickness over the past few decades. We know this from measuring their mass from space in the past decade.

A couple of images dotting the walls here at UNESCO today - sadly, we've not done a good job of protecting our glaciers so far and the vital services they provide. As we enter into the Year of Glacier Preservation, we need a step change in policy action to protect these vital resources globally

❄️ ⛱️ 🌊 NEW ARTICLE out today in Nature Climate Change: ‘Glaciers give way to new coasts’ This ‘News & Views’ article coincides with the UN International Day of Glacier Preservation. Arctic glacier recession has revealed ~2500 km of new coastline since the year 2000. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

It's International Year of Glacier Preservation and the inaugural World Glacier Day. But why should we preserve these glaciers? from.ncl.ac.uk/why-should-w....

To celebrate this first ever World Day of the Glacier, and to highlight the role of climate change in shrinking the glaciers of the Andes, we are delighted to produce a first Deplete and Retreat Policy Brief on the future of the Andean water towers. www.antarcticglaciers.org/2025/03/poli...

It's the first International Day of #Glaciers! The ice worldwide is under threat due to rapid #climatechange. This day puts a spotlight on glaciers as a vulnerable but globally relevant element of the climate system. It is not yet too late to save them! @vaw-glaciology.bsky.social

For the morning crowd: I wrote a thing on the latest #SeaLevelRise science from the @h2020protect.bsky.social project sternaparadisaea.net/2025/03/19/p...

You know you want to see Jeremy in a suit. Do come and engage with this side event, it promises to be an interesting and lively discussion.

I'm at UNESCO tomorrow. On a panel for about glacier preservation. Isn't that how everyone celebrates their birthday? You can witness the rare event of me wearing a suit by registering here: unesco-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

We are now in Paris, where we're convening to celebrate the first World Day of the Glacier. Tomorrow there is a celebration at the UNESCO HQ in Paris, and we are hosting a side event to shine a light on the plight of the cryosphere. Join here, for free: www.un-glaciers.org/en/articles/...
