"Wherever you live, decent public transport shouldn’t be seen as a luxury but a lifeline, & a driver of opportunity & social mobility" 🚍 Two weeks ago today we launched our blueprint for better buses, in Liverpool. Here's what Liverpool City Region Mayor @metromayorsteve.bsky.social had to say ⤵️

A really welcome announcement from the government earlier this week on fairer funding for local government. I was pleased to comment on it. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Study claims North of England lost out on £140bn for transport in ‘decade of deceit’ The North is short-changed: £140bn transport funding gap leaves region decades behind, IPPR calls for urgent investment.

The decline of buses has had economic, environmental and social consequences 🚌 Thanks @georginaq.bsky.social for highlighting our recent research on buses in this week's The State of Britain newsletter @financialtimes.com 🗞️ on.ft.com/3G2J2iD 🔗

Competitive funding pots concentrate power in Whitehall, whereas devolved funding puts power in local hands 👍 @ashwin-kumar.bsky.social unpacks the Spending Review on the latest episode of #bbcpnw 📺

Missed our event this week on the future of buses, with Minister @simonlightwood.org.uk and Mayor @metromayorsteve.bsky.social? Have no fear! You can still get your #BetterBuses policy fix by reading our new research report here ⤵️ www.ippr.org/articles/en-...

🩺 @sebrees1.bsky.social‬, Head of Health at IPPR, talks to @itvnews.bsky.social‬ about the improvements we can expect to see in NHS service after the #SpendingReview

#spendingreview 2025 kicks off… Helpful economic framing at beginning from the Chancellor: people must feel benefit of growth & makes positive case for moving away from austerity with 2.3% growth in public spending over forecast period.

Today's Spending Review starts to rewrite the rules in favour of regions ✒️ @zoebillingham.bsky.social reacts ⤵️

First few seconds of the Spending Review and mortgages & planning already mentioned.... A good start! #CSR #spendingreview

Big moment for the Chancellor. Yes, the numbers matter — but so does what they say about this gov’s priorities. Will investment be spread across the country? Will reform follow? This #SpendingReview is about direction as much as pounds and pence. 📺 @harryqp.bsky.social on BBC News 👇

Today’s the day 🗓️ The Spending Review is a chance to rewire the economy in favour of regions 🔌 All eyes now on The Chancellor 📺 🔗 politico.eu/article/rach...

A real joy to be in Liverpool today to launch our buses report today with the Minister for Local Transport @simonlightwood.org.uk and the Mayor of Liverpool City Region @lcrmayor.bsky.social

We’re in sunny Liverpool today to launch our blueprint for better, greener buses 🚍 @zoebillingham.bsky.social welcomes our audience and 🌟 speakers @simonlightwood.org.uk & @lcrmayor.bsky.social 🗣️ #BetterBuses

Hop on board & support the idea for a National Bus Company: nationally procured but locally controlled green buses. New from us @ipprnorth.bsky.social launching today with Mayor @lcrmayor.bsky.social & Minister @simonlightwood.org.uk in Liverpool.

Fantastic new report by @ipprnorth.bsky.social & @msingerhobbs.bsky.social. Decent buses sit at the heart of a thriving society, inclusive economy and healthy environment. This report spells out the changes needed to unlock the real potential of buses in England.

🗓️ It's time for better buses 🚍 For more comfortable rides, cleaner air & value for money 📚 So today in Liverpool, we'll launch our blueprint for a new National Bus Company to power up greener, locally controlled buses ➡️ www.ippr.org/articles/en-...

Sometimes suspect the political argument “let’s build trams in the north” gets dismissed as “pacifying anti-London Brexit voters who aren’t grateful for their fiscal transfers”. No. There is a deep, broad social understanding here of the lag, and the economic reasons for closing it (even a bit!)

'£1,182 per person for London and £486 for northerners? That isn't right' - the latest figures illustrating an ever-growing gap in public spending on transport @ipprnorth.bsky.social @manchestereveningnews.co.uk

We're on a roll today... @ipprnorth.bsky.social in the @the-independent.com today on how the North has missed £140bn in transport investment over the last government www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Over the decade to 2022/23, each year: 📌London received £1,183 transport spending per person 📌The North: £486 📌The North East: £430 📌The North West: £540 📌Yorkshire & Humber: £441 📌East Midlands (lowest in the UK): £355 Despite promises made to the North & regions, it was a decade of deceit

Great coverage this morning of our new @ipprnorth.bsky.social work out today in @theguardian.com feat. lead author Marcus Johns 🙌 www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Analysis by @ipprnorth.bsky.social reveals the £140bn transport investment gap between the North and London over the last 14yrs. Long term investment in the North’s rail network, integrated with local transport & house building plans, is key to improving connectivity and boosting prosperity.

📢 We've joined forces with Lord Jim O'Neill to call on Treasury to take a big bet on northern growth 🚨 The North missed out on £140bn in transport spending over the last 10yrs 🚉 But we've got a plan - Great Northern Rail 📚 www.ippr.org/articles/on-...

Today we @ipprnorth.bsky.social @ippr.org call for Great Northern Rail: a pan northern commitment to bring together mayoral plans & finally deliver on reliable, fast rail journeys from Liverpool to Hull to Newcastle. Great to have Lord Jim O’Neill onboard, too. www.ippr.org/articles/on-...

Today we lay bare a decade of broken promises as we reveal how the disparity in transport spending between the North & London has ballooned If the North had seen the same transport investment as London under the previous government, it would have received £140bn more

Regional income inequality has risen significantly since 2011 - see below It is now far higher than any comparable country The government must raise living standards this parliament But they must also devolve to mayors and councils, so they can grow their economies and cut local costs

We’re getting closer to what we need on transport investment in the North.. yesterday’s £15.6bn committment very welcome. Looking forward to seeing more on pan northern infrastructure next week 🚅

This Green Book reform better be good.

"This goes part of the way to restoring northern infrastructure to what it deserves to be" 🚎 @zoebillingham.bsky.social reacts on @itvnews.bsky.social to the Chancellor's announcement of cash for Mayors to deliver their transport plans 📺

Today the Chancellor announced that the Green Book review conclusions will be published next week, and pledged investment in all our nations and regions 💬 @zoebillingham.bsky.social shared her reaction with BBC Radio 4's World At One 📻

Ahead of next week's Spending Review, the Chancellor is today expected to announce £15.6 billion for local transport projects in England’s city regions 🪙 Our response ⤵️

Finally, investment in northern transport is back on track. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Let’s make local and regional the centre of democratic reform: votes at 16, single transferable votes & digital voting at the hyperlocal level. Devolution must deliver democracy differently. Great to speak at #StrongerThings conf today in Guildhall, London.

IPPR research on the impact of the two-child benefit limit on families was featured on @channel4news.bsky.social‬. The cap is pushing 80 children per day into poverty in the UK - this could total 410,000 by the end of the decade.

🚍 We're en route to better buses as today marks the Second Reading of the Bus Services Bill 🚌 Buses matter for people, the economy & environment. Reform is long overdue - declining services have cost us £2.4bn since 2011 🤝 Thanks to MPs who've joined us to talk better buses

Northern Appraisal Playbook launched: "...securing investment in the North is often held back by an appraisal process that does not fully capture all the benefits - especially wider economic, social, and environmental impacts. We've developed this playbook to help you overcome these challenges..."

Boris Johnson talked a good game on levelling up — but the total lack of delivery has only deepened disillusionment. 📻 ‪@zoebillingham.bsky.social‬ spoke to ‪@saschaosullivan.bsky.social‬ for Politico's Westminster Insider pod 👇

Come & be one of our @ippr.bsky.social trustees! We already have a great team & it’s a very exciting time to join us.

Helpful summary of where the bus services bill has got to, including the amendment made in the Lords. Second reading in the House of Commons is due on 2nd June.

A lot of talk at #UKREiFF about the potential of a visitor levy as @ipprnorth.bsky.social & the metro mayors have called for. In the meantime, Liverpool BID are taking it forward themselves… will the government respond in the Devo White Paper? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The UK is often described as the most regionally unequal developed country. The issue, say experts, hasn't been London overperforming, but second cities underperforming. To truly address this, regions require much more political power, Benedict Cooper reports for @thehousemag.bsky.social
