IWT Dublin Branch invites you to a Green Drinks entitled "Connecting with Nature". This event combines a short talk with an opportunity people to meet up in person and discuss how to protect and restore nature. Tuesday, May 6th, 19:00 at Chaplin’s Pub, Hawkin’s St, Dublin 2.

Next week, the EU Parliament is voting to downgrade the protection status of wolves, despite a clear lack of scientific evidence. In order to do so, it has to open up the Habitats Directive, a 30-year old law that protects nature. We can't let this happen. Keep your #HandsOffNature.

A damaging proposal to cull a protected bird species rather then looking deeper into the systemic reasons that fish populations are declining.

A great opportunity to learn about the worrying impacts of fish farming on wild salmon populations.

The Common Fisheries Policy states that the distribution of quotas should be based on social and environmental criteria rather than historical catch criteria. Implementing this would represent a significant step forward for small-scale, low-impact fishers.

@whittledaway.bsky.social highlights the need for long overdue refrom of Ireland forestry sector. We need natural regneration of native woodland and continuous cover forestry not clear felling. Both have popular support in Ireland and huge benifit to nature. www.thejournal.ie/readme/spruc...

The Irish WIldlife Trust has a new look!

Great article by @sadhbhoneill.bsky.social about the value of hedgerows for nature. Please report illegal hedgerow cutting to the NPWS / Garda Síochána or by using the PAW Ireland app. [https://wildlifecrime.ie/report/] www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Coillte has shut down its non-profit nature focused org Coillte Nature. This is a worrying move. The Coillte Nature team were doing great work. Can the commercially driven Coillte really restore our precious native woodlands for the good of society? www.independent.ie/irish-news/q...

Destructive fishing is decimating fish populations and destroying marine ecosystems. The Irish Wildlife Trust calls on the Government to submit their EU roadmaps detailing how they plan to phase out bottom trawling in MPA's by 2030 #ProtectedMeansProtected #OceansPact #MPA iwt.ie/press-releas...

📢New analysis No EU country has comprehensive plans to phase out #BottomTrawling from #MPAs by 2030. This is in spite of EU nature laws & international biodiversity commitments that bind Member States to protect their #MPAs. 🐟 #OceansPact #ProtectedMeansProtected seas-at-risk.org/press-releas...

Horrific undercover video from four randomly selected pig farms in Ireland. Thanks to NARA and Animal Rebellion. I have submitted Bill to ban teeth-clipping, tail-docking and castration as well as prohibiting sow stalls and farrowing crates that don't allow sows to turn around. #AnimalRights

This action to weaken wolf protection while three of the regional wolf populations within the EU are not in favourable conservation status, sets a dangerous precedent of disregarding science-based evidence and using species as a bargaining tool within policitics.

Restricting a destructive activity within a 'protected' area is the least EU countries can do to protect the marine environment. Last years independent polls showed that 70% of Irish citizens oppose bottom trawling as a fishing practice #ProtectedMeansProtected

New blog highlighting our main asks for the EU Oceans Pact. We need coherence across marine related policies & a transparent & clear roadmap to meet targets. A just transition for sustainable fisheries is vital as well as full implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Law iwt.ie/the-eu-ocean...

As #COP16 UN talks in Rome have concluded with a hard-fought resolution on biodiversity finance, it's a reminder for the EU to budget to #RestoreNature! That's why we have been calling for a dedicated Nature Restoration Fund 🌳 💸 Read more: www.wwf.eu/wwf_news/pub...

#COP16 negotiations concluded with key decisions on the GBF monitoring framework, financial mechanisms and resource mobilization. Developing countries have stated there will be greater funding from the private sector which will increase the use of biodiversity credits www.cbd.int/doc/press/20...

Today the @ec.europa.eu officially unveiled its proposal to amend the CSDDD. Reopening this major legislation without evidence, transparency, or public consultation undermines EU democratic principles and undermines trust. (1/2)

With countries meeting in Rome to discuss global biodiversity targets, it's been shown that over half of the countries which have submitted plans are either committing to protect less than 30% of their territory or they are not setting an actual target www.carbonbrief.org/revealed-mor...

Coexistance is key. Read more here @whittledaway.bsky.social 👇 "What we really need is a study, not on the lynx or the wolves, but on people and how our values, attitudes and perceptions can evolve to a point where all species are living alongside each other" www.irishtimes.com/science/2025...

An extremely important resource for anyone looking to rewild their land

Despite the importance of peatlands as carbon stores, the study finds that globally only 17% of peatlands fall within protected areas – a “substantially lower” proportion than other “high-value ecosystems”, such as mangroves, saltmarshes and tropical forests. www.carbonbrief.org/just-17-of-w...

Far right MEPs are trying to spin the narrative to dismantle the voice of civil society with these disinformation campaigns Funding for NGO's from the European Commission is 15.6 million (0.006% of its budget), which is a fraction of what many industries and private companies receive from the EU

We welcome the retention of a Minister of State for Nature & Heritage. Congratulations to Christopher O'Sullivan and and we look forward to working with you on urgent issues in the Irish environment www.thejournal.ie/junior-minis...

We look forward to engaging with new Government Ministers and call for the reinstatement of a Minister of State for Nature. After a very disapointing Programme for Government, this would be a welcome first step in showing leadership at tackling the climate and biodiversity crises iwt.ie/20053-2/

Another EU country takes steps to effectively protect their Marine Protected Areas. Let's hope the new Irish Governement and other EU Member States follow suit #ProtectedMeansProtected

Great article from @whittledaway.bsky.social on the various perceptions of rewilding over the years and the importance that the concept still holds for relationship with nature.

Regional Independent Group secure two super junior Ministerial roles in Government and Independent TD Michael Lowry confirmed the group is now happy that its policies have been included in the draft programme for government. www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

After this heartbreaking incident, NPWS said it deplores the deliberate killing of rare and endangered species and takes bird of prey persecutions very seriously. Members of the public with any information can contact the NPWS by emailing [email protected]. www.rte.ie/news/2025/01...
