Crystal Palace absolutely deserve this. Not just today but for 12 years of being a stable, properly ran PL club. A Palace-supporting chairman with shrewd recruitment, common-sense signings at times & doing quietly good work with no airs & graces. They are owed their day in the sun

That was just so Crystal Palace, wasn't it. Sit deep, have none of the ball and then one move - Palace are one of the best under Glasner for high speed and vertical play. Incredible speed and quality from back to front. Great stuff

Wrote this about Emiliano Martinez and Joan Garcia on May 8. #AVFC 🔗Full piece: www.nytimes.com/athletic/633...

Unai Emery had to relay Villa’s foundations & be tougher to score against. He held meetings with players & insisted, despite a sub-par first half of the season, they could still qualify for the CL. Belief arrived. But so too did a overhaul defensively. #AVFC www.nytimes.com/athletic/636...

Unai Emery on Leon Bailey and Emiliano Martinez's emotions at full-time: "We are focused on the matches we are playing. Of course it's the last match here. But I don't know. We will see about the team and the players but they are responding on the field. (1/3) #AVFC

Unai Emery delays his post match press conference to check his phone. "Chelsea won? Ok, I expected it! It's not in our hands but we are in the race." #AVFC

Emiliano Martinez was particuarly emotional at full-time. There's interest from Saudi Arabia and there will be discussions over his future. An unknown summer ahead and if it is his final game at Villa Park, it's been some ride. #AVFC

Instant analysis - Aston Villa 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur: 🟣#AVFC take a huge step in the Champions League race 🟤Villa have been able to grind out results when it matters most w/Jay Harris on @theathleticfc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/athletic/635...

FT: #AVFC 2-0 Spurs Villa finish the season at Villa Park with just one league loss - back in August and extend home unbeaten run to 21 in all comps. This could be the biggest result of the lot as may be pivotal to CL hopes. Some achievement to take this into the final day.

Ross Barkley replaces Amadou Onana. Will be a big player next season. #AVFC

Kamara has been brilliant in the 2nd half after a tough opening. A few minutes before, he was under pressure but simply took a few touches and settled play down. This time, he receives on the edge of the box, cuts onto his "weaker" left foot and drives low past Kinsky. 2-0 #AVFC

Honestly, I reckon Villa have either scored or conceded every time in the last month they've been preparing subs. Maybe it should become a superstition to feign a sub in need of a goal... #AVFC

Villa have been aiming for back post crosses all evening and they manage to break through from a corner to the same area. Watkins wins the first contact and finds Konsa, who hooks the ball on and into the net. Huge goal. 1-0 #AVFC

Leon Bailey is coming on. As is Ross Barkley. #AVFC

Emery really not happy with Villa's reaction to a few lost duels. Onana caught on his heels. Villa look a little short of energy and playing like they know how critical this half is. Tottenham's confidence is growing. #AVFC

These type of stoppages only suit Tottenham. Emery is pointing at his temple and asking for calm after Konsa and Onana get into scuffles. McGinn also unhappy and told them both to get back into position. Villa Park understandably anxious. Referee is taking his time, also. #AVFC

HT: #AVFC 0-0 Tottenham Tottenham defending resolutely - packing the box & midfield. Villa think they can have success with crosses towards the back post, but need to be quicker in possession and win the ball quicker to stop Spurs down the left. Some variety in positions, too

Over 75% of Tottenham's attacks have come down Villa's right. That's a disproportionately high number. Son looks sharp but #AVFC - between Cash and Kamara - struggling to cut it out at source. Going forward, Villa just have to stay patient - you'd like to think a chance will come

That Onana tackle to stop Tottenham breaking is exactly what Emery wants and will likely result in #AVFC creating chances. 74% possession but need to sustain attacks and get the ball to Asensio and Rogers as much as possible.

Matty Cash has been booked for asking for a yellow card for Sarr... Just before that, a beautiful pass from Pau into Watkins - #AVFC are having a lot of territory and possession but it's a packed midfield and box to break down

Big save from Martinez from Odobert's flick. Tottenham are getting joy down the left and largely through Son. They have pace on transition and are direct. #AVFC aren't stopping it well enough at source (hence Emery's frustration).

Emery is trying to gee up his players after Tottenham play out under pressure. Wasn't happy. He wants more intensity in the press/counter-press. #AVFC

The pitch is so congested. Both teams playing compact and high and the midfield (Villa have both wingers tucking in) has little to no space Emery pushing both FBs high and telling Watkins to make runs behind Davies & Danso. So the best route is to go either around or over. #AVFC

Underway after a minute's applause in tribute to Peter McParland and Jake Fidlay. McGinn starts on the left and Rogers off the right again. Currently quite a few empty seats in the away end and glorious sunshine. #AVFC

A tribute to the late, great Peter McParland in the North Stand. #AVFC

Ian Maatsen returns to the XI. In good form & majority of his starts have been at home. Encouraging signs for a young player - who wants to play more - to see he is getting closer to becoming the first-choice left-back heading into the summer. #AVFC www.nytimes.com/athletic/622...

Tottenham are even rotating their goalkeeper. Turns out they could have played on the normal fixture date, after all. #AVFC

#AVFC XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Pau, Maatsen; Kamara, Onana; Rogers, Asensio, McGinn; Watkins Three changes from Bournemouth win. Pau, Maatsen and McGinn replace Mings, Digne and Ramsey.

#AVFC are unbeaten in their last 20 home games in all comps - the last time they were on a longer unbeaten home run was in May 1977. Villa Park has formed the backbone of Emery's success. But this game last season was his worst defeat - he knows Villa have to dominate tonight

Emery: "We will miss every single fan that could not make it today because of the change in fixture date. We are sorry they could not be here because of circumstances but we are thankful and very grateful for all of you who are here and who adapted to a difficult change." #AVFC

Emery: "Finishing the season, we are going to rest. But my mind is on competing. How are we going to prepare for next year? "Every day I wake up with one message in my mind - football is very, very difficult." "I need to improve every day. I need to be better every day." #AVFC

Unai Emery on Tottenham: "I think they will try and play with their better players and to get their best performances to be ready for the final. To play in the Premier League each match for their supporters, for their league is always important." #AVFC

As expected, Unai Emery confirms Marcus Rashford and Youri Tielemans are not available for tomorrow. Means Rashford will not play again this season, with the final match against parent club, Manchester United. Jacob Ramsey is suspended. #AVFC

Tyrone Mings defied expectations from doctors that he would miss at least two months following another knee injury in January. Considering Pau was injured and #AVFC were short at CB, he returned in four weeks, risking his own health in resulting games. www.nytimes.com/athletic/633...

Pau is an Emery favourite. Before he joined, staff used clips of Pau to #AVFC centre-backs to show what they wanted in possession. Tyrone Mings provides different strengths. It has provoked a culture clash among fans. Piece @theathleticfc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/athletic/633...

Kaine Kesler-Hayden and #AVFC to seek a permanent move. The next step for the full-back is to join a high-end Championship side or lower-end Premier League team. Interest has been received already. Piece on Villa's summer business: @theathleticfc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/athletic/633...

#AVFC are well in this CL race. A 3rd season in Europe shows remarkable consistency & management but another year, as a non "top six" club, in the CL is a different level altogether.Speaks of the mentality Emery has installed & winning - even when Villa haven't been at their best

In Emery’s mind, he was a diligent player, but could never reach the next level. He reasoned that “none of my managers could overcome my deficiencies” or had the obsession to maximise his talents - like he’s done with those at #AVFC. This is what made him www.nytimes.com/athletic/628...

Iraola: "The small things Villa do very well. The last minute of the half, they put a ball in for a free-kick. They are very good at small details: the throw-ins, the free-kicks - nothing really happened. "It wasn't open until the end. They controlled their box very well."#AVFC

Andoni Iraola: "He was close to me and I don't think Jacob Ramsey's was a second yellow." #AVFC

Unai Emery on Mings/Pau substitution: "He was getting tired and I decided because we needed the defence strongly. He (Mings) did a fantastic job and we needed the help." #AVFC

Emery: "I want to play. I don't want holidays. I want to train. Tomorrow we will train. We will prepare the match against Tottenham." #AVFC

Unai Emery: "Today we got Europe. Two years we played in Europe has had some really 'wow moments' with our supporters. Next year will have more work, more demands but our owners, our workers, all understand our process in increasing our demands and getting our objectives." #AVFC
