403p: Intense storm surging into the Beltway area with potentially damaging winds. Will take about 45 mins to pass any one area. Severe tstorm warning for entire area. Stay inside and avoid driving in this. Updates at CWG.live #cwgalert

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

so off that Supreme Court decision, we offer you a guide on how to advocate for trans rights in your community:

NEW: Trump is seriously considering joining the war on Iran and launching a strike against its nuclear facilities, U.S. officials tell Axios.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee faces calls to resign after "disgusting" statements about shootings targeting Minnesota lawmakers. Today at @axios: www.axios.com/local/salt-l...

What are folks using as a CMS for static sites these days? Asking for a friend who wants to write more on their @11ty.dev site

This. Is. What. Democracy. Looks. Like. #NoKings

NEW: The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for the suspect in the fatal shooting of a Minnesota lawmaker

The second event along Jefferson and Leesburg Pike was organized by a group of 80+ year olds from the nearby retirement home. They got the permits, spoke to the local businesses, and came prepared. ~1000 people when we drove by earlier.

<thread> On the left: June 12, Judge Breyer writing that THE test for whether the US Marines/Guard violate Posse Comitatus will be whether they've engaged in "detaining" civilians. On the right: June 13: See for yourself. Note: The DoD has confirmed the detention of civilian to Reuters.

@abmakulec.bsky.social doing a wonderful job moderating a panel on the future of #dataviz at #Outlier2025. Not sure I was up for feeling this existential on a Friday, but I'm glad we're thinking about it as a field.

The Pentagon Pizza Report never fails

You probably already know our scatter plots can do a lot. But just how much? We just published a whole collection of scatter plots that show data over time; all built by Datawrapper employees. 📊 Take a look: academy.datawrapper.de/article/414-...

Want to follow along with #Outlier2025 this year? Use the hashtag to help others find your posts and connect on the great content. I'm attending virtually this year (and will need to miss today because of prior travel) but I'm so excited to see how we're "reimagining" the field of 📊

My latest

Alright fam, what’d I miss?

About to board a four hour flight. Can’t wait to catch up on the meme content when I land.

Oh, I’m sorry. Did your rational and logical economic system not account for what if two terminally online men had a falling out?

This is brilliant visual journalism. And now I’m mad I didn’t think to do something like this first. 📊 also a great example of why you extend the X axis to show more context on line charts (instead of the Y)

Some good side by side comparisons here of design changes to improve your #dataviz

@jaredshort.com was very excited when he realized he could use his laser cutter to make the stencils for our spray paint words.

We hosted a murder mystery dinner last night and it was so much fun! @jaredshort.com and I went a little overboard with decorations to fit the theme of the game. We made a sign post, jungle branches & vines, had torches, and made our own “crates” of artifacts & camp supplies.

Many others are posting abt this too but this graphic viscerally shows how dire the presidential budget is for NASA 🔭🧪and worldwide astronomy. I can’t express how sad this makes me, as an American scientist. And it’s mostly already paid for projects, so also no logic in terms of saving money.

The best kind of Friday news!

I don't think @wendyshijia.bsky.social is active on Bsky, but I was so impressed with this post she shared on LinkedIn that I wanted to spread it wider here. She's been experimenting with Blender to create maps to 3d print! Love to see this kind of exploration of mediums. wendyshijia.notion.site

I spent five weeks talking to federal workers about knowledge loss and brain drain across the federal government, and its implications, both right now and for decades to come. Their stories are frightening, but I think it's important to know what we're facing: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I could never run for office because I’d rather ban sports entirely than ban trans people from participating.

Lifting desegregation policies set by court orders — some of them a half-century old — may lead to a wide range of changes in more than 80 school systems Axios has identified as still being under such requirements. The Trump administration wants them over www.axios.com/2025/05/29/t...

Putting this out here for the folks I know who are on Substack. I know it's hard to move platforms, but you should really consider it.

SEPTA amid a dire financial shortfall is planning deep service cuts. But those cuts won't just impact those who currently rely on SEPTA to get around. Drivers commuters will be impacted too. Thomas Fitzgerald and @jasen.bsky.social have the details. www.inquirer.com/transportati...

Forgot what I was working on previously when I opened my laptop and was greeted with this 😂

It's the end of the week so I'm sure I did something stupid, but uh...anybody have any thoughts on why my grid/subgrid rows are extending well outside of their container? It's happening only in Safari, and only when I resize the container to less than the max-width on my outermost div.

A powerful and moving #dataviz.
